“Excellent hotel with friendly staff; a place to rest”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

The hotel was renovated around december 2014 so everything is new and very clean. We had a double bed room with a jaccuzzi on the balcony. This was great. The place is always very well cleaned every day. The staff is always smiling and nice. The ''à la carte'' restaurants ( japonese, french gourmet, brasilian steak house and mexican) were rather fancy and absolutly delicious. The buffet restaurant and the snack ( open 24h) were serving a wide variety of food.
There is one big pool in the middle of the complex, one kiddy pool and 2 other pools more isolated.
You can snorkel to see turtles and coral at a 5 minutes walk from the site and it is free ( no need for a tour). This explains why there was algae on the shore ( which were removed everyday; but not completely ). The part of the beach in front of the complex was beautiful and sandy without coral so it was a great place to swim. The other parts of the beach, you can swim but there is coral patches.
We decided to go to Playa Del Carmen by ourself so we took a ''collectivo (35 pesos oneway; runs until midnight)'' . We also went to see a cenote ( cenote cristallino, entrance 100 pesos; 30 pesos for the collectivo)which was very nice and clean. This was worth to see at this price. If you want, you can walk to small souvenir boutiques ( 15 min).
There is still construction on the site but we didn't ear anything. This is not a place to party as there is no club yet so everything was closed at 11 o'clock.
The wifi is available and free everywhere.
We really enjoyed the place and I would definitly go back!

My husband and stayed here March 18-25, what a wonderful place to celebrate our 30thAnniversary. The vibe is very zen and romantic.

What made our stay most enjoyable was the incredibly friendly and fantastic service. The staff here becomes like family. I think they would be just as great even if we didn't tip.

We stayed in building 4 on the main floor. It was pretty quiet and it was nice to be just steps from the beach and little infinity pool. There was also a portable bar close to our room. I agree with others on the fact that the tub on the patio is a little public to use but it's still a nice touch. The closet could use another shelf and the curtain rod was a little high for me to reach but still tons of space. There was a sewer smell coming from the drain, hopefully they fix that soon. The bed was extremely comfortable, and nicely appointed. Also the fridge was well stocked with water, soda and juices and replaced every day. The maid service was impeccable and our room was even cleaned twice one day. The first day we left a tip for the maid with a note and she didn't take it. Then I remembered to leave it on the bed.

We enjoyed the food and tried all of the restaurants on site. Our favourite was the Gourmet, Asian running a close second. Actually they were all good. My husband liked the sushi bar too, says the sushi is pretty good. The beach snack bar is open 24 hours if you need it and there is room service which we didn't use as we liked going out. The bar service if great and they made just about any drink we asked for.

I went for a massage at the beautiful spa. Very professional service. I asked for a fairly hard massage and it was, so if you are a little tender maybe ask for a gentler one. The gym is also located at the spa.

We didn't do any of the daily activities offered as we enjoyed the snorkeling so much, but there is a very nice bamboo building past building four all set up for yoga.

Wifi was great in our room, but not so good at the lobby, cell service only in the lobby, so couldn't phone from our room.

One of the main reasons we chose this resort was to snorkel from the beach and we weren't disappointed. We saw an incredible variety of fish and a few turtles. Apparently there are stingrays too, but we didn't see any. You need to go a ways from shore to see the most fish but they were close to shore too.

Akumel is just a short walk down the beach and there were enough little stores there to get most of our souvenir shopping done there. As far as we know, there are only pay toilets there and they are pretty stinky, so use the washroom at the resort before you go.

One thing we didn't like was their promotion of the “infinity preferred club” They want you to meet with them for breakfast and say if you do they will give you gift certificates for the spa or excursions. Others told us that the meeting lasts for more like several hours, and they want you to buy another stay with them. And really when you are getting such wonderful service why would you want preferred service.

We would definitely come here again!

Room Tip: Building 4 is quiet and closest to water but not the best swimming beach. Sewer smell in 4009

We arrived late in the evening so did not really see the resort until the morning. We had asked for building four, hoping to be the quiet area but received building one. A little disappointed but thought we would see what it looked like in the morning. Ends up it was a great room, corner suite on the bottom floor, 1001. It felt like our deck was on the ocean. It was a fifty foot walk to the waters edge. There was no need to get loungers in the morning as we pulled a second lounger from the beach and used our deck area instead. The beach was just steps away. The view morning and night was perfect. Sunrises in the morning and stars at night.
The room itself is very large but as others have said, very sparse. We had read a few things before leaving such as no dresser for the clothes so we had brought extra hangers. We did feel we had to live out of our suitcase with no drawers but managed fine. Our guess is that "maybe things are on backorder". There was a desk and yet no chair for the desk. We didn't do room service but not sure how comfortable it would have been to eat at the coffee table. Still, a large, nice room, just had the feeling they were not quite compete.
The one chair, one lounger on the deck we just can't figure out.
As for the construction, yes we heard it every day, both from the building being built next door and the top floors of our building one. The pounding was very loud in the room so had it rained a lot, hanging in the room would not have been pleasant.
The beach was fabulous, water shoes very much a necessity if you plan on playing in the water. Very busy with the towel game and we have to say we can't blame people for fighting for some space with shade on the beach. Or even to just get a lounger without shade. They are short of chairs and it is a problem they most definitely need to deal with.
The public beach area is very crowded by 10am. Snorkel tour after snorkel tour after snorkel tour. Not sure how they are going to fit all the people on the small beach from the new hotel once built. We are just glad we went before that opens.
Walking on the beach both ways was great. Head to the left and you had beach and a small little shopping area. To the right and you had some beautiful terrain, some a little difficult to walk through but well worth it.
Snorkeling was fantastic and got lots of great underwater pictures.
Food and drink was all great. Never went hungry and found the snack bar very convenient for both breakfast and lunch.
There were a few small issues throughout the stay but we will only mention one as we feel it is important to know.
We had read that the dead bolt in the rooms could be unlocked with your key card. So we tried it and yes it most certainly can. We didn't feel this was a very good feature as what is the point of having a dead bolt. We wondered who else could get into our room with the dead bolt locked. Turns out everyone can. Didn't like this at all. We did mention it to management and they were shocked to here this and had us prove it to them. So we did. Long story short, we were told it was a safety feature, which it could be if you had small children but assured us only the master key and our key could do this. Sorry but not true. We will leave it at that.
Would we go back. Yes for the hotel itself but once that new hotel opens that beach is going to be too busy for us.
Still a great hotel and a great stay.

I am not sure where to begin--this has been our best experience ever at a resort. We have traveled many times to Mexico and the Caribbean and stayed in many resorts. Akumal Bay Beach Resort and Spa far exceeds any other experiences. This resort is elegant, yet laid back and relaxed. The staff is so amazing--everyone is very welcoming and they take wonderful care of you. Please tip them, they work very hard!! We would like to mention some that really stood out for us: Bereniece, Luis, Lorena, Alexander, and Jose. So many more, but can not remember all of their names! We tried all of the a la carte restaurants, except for the Japanese. The Gourmet Restaurant--true gourmet experience. Presentation was outstanding--quality of food was amazing. We had the steak, and it was better than the local butcher that we pay top $$ at here in our city. The Mexican Restaurant was also very good, quality of food and selection pleased everyone. I wasn't crazy about the Brazilian Restaurant, mostly because I am just not a Brazilian fan. We enjoyed the buffet very much, as we found the quality and selection excellent for an all inclusive resort. I'm usually tired of the buffet at a resort by day 3, but not at Akumal. We couldn't get over the quality of beef--steaks and roast beef were so good! I think I liked the ice cream a little too much--had to have a bowl every night!
We found the rooms very comfortable and tastefully decorated. We had requested building 3 or 4 to be close to my cousin that we were traveling with. We were put in building 1 on the first night, but the front desk was very accommodating and moved us the next day. Thank you to Lorena at the front desk! She was always super helpful throughout our stay. The bed was very comfortable, toiletries offered were of good quality. There is a jacuzzi tub on the balcony, but we didn't try it. The beach is right in front of your balcony, as are all of the rooms at Akumal. You do not get this at other resorts--they charge a premium to have a "beachfront" view. All of the views at Akumal are on the beach-- this was huge for us. A suggestion for the rooms: in the closet area, add some drawers. Or, the table under the TV could be replaced with a dresser. Housekeeping was excellent--they stock your fridge each day with beer, snacks, water, and do a fantastic job keeping your room spotless. Each day we had a different animal made out of a towel waiting for us!
Drinks at the bar are top notch--any kind of cocktail is available and they are NOT served in those cheap plastic cups you get at most all inclusive resorts. They come in the proper cocktail glass, which I am oddly fussy about. They offer many top shelf brands of liquor--selection is very good. We loved the coffee, cappucino and Americano coffee as well. The spa was just getting it's final touches, and WOW! It is absolutely beautiful--total serenity. There is a giant Buddha in the lobby area that is gorgeous, massage rooms, spa hot tub, fountain, steam and sauna and gym.
Entertainment: We looked forward to hearing the Mariachi band every night. We also loved Abel, the one man band that played for people on the beach each day. He is a gem--what a kind and gentle man. The lounge music that played 70's and 80's tunes kind of put us to sleep. Maybe it's just me, but I want to hear music that is indigenous to the country I'm visiting. I was craving to hear Latin music--there are so many genres of it to enjoy. I think Akumal needs to get some live bands that play more latin music and get the people up dancing! This is always one of my favourite things about traveling--hearing music that the local people would listen to.
The beach: Out of this world. White beach, turquoise water. We went snorkelling and saw lots of sea turtles! One thing that concerned me is that it is getting very crowded in the snorkelling area in the ocean, and we are concerned on this affect on the turtles. I hope that will be protected better in the future--especially with the huge 600 room resort being built right beside Akumal Bay Beach.
We can not wait to return to Akumal Bay Beach Resort. We have found the perfect resort for us: small, laid back, elegant, friendly and peaceful.

Room Tip: Building 1 & 2 close to large pool, and popular area of beach. Good for families and younger cro...

We stayed for 2 weeks. We're a couple in our 40's. Been to dozens of resorts so have lots to compare it to. This resort is one of the best ones we've stayed at. I've listed out what I think is everything you'd need to know about the Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness

Resort. This is a newly renovated/built resort that’s been opened for just a few months.
It’s gorgeous. It’s not a monster resort nor is it too small. Everything is within a few minutes of walking. Resort is literally right on the beach and all rooms have an ocean view. This is not owned by a large corporation or large hotel chain. The resort is independently owned and operated.

Check-in – fast and easy. Welcome drink and greeted by friendly staff. No ugly plastic bracelets they make you aware. Instead it’s a very nice braided rope with no name of the hotel on it.

Lobby – beautiful, comfortable, open air with lots of places to sit. Currency exchange in lobby. Lobby bar along with excellent service and waitresses. Sintia is one of the BEST and nicest servers we’ve ever come across. I hope the owners realize what an asset she is and she deserves a raise! She is very fast, efficient and professional. Also Alexander one of the bartenders. He is excellent as well. Next to the lobby is another larger lobby sitting right on the beach with it’s own bar. Again very large with tons of seating. For those that smoke you can smoke in the lobby as it’s all open air. You cannot smoke in the rooms or restaurants.

Rooms – all new and beautifully done. Room keys are electronic ones. Each block of rooms is 4 floors. They’re working on getting elevators running and some blocks have functional ones already. Top floors are penthouses and have two levels. All rooms have whirlpool tubs on the balcony. Rooms are open concept so not a lot of privacy between the bathroom area and the rest of the room. Toilet and shower are behind frosted glass doors but the rest of the bathroom area is open to the rest of the room. Lots of towels and face cloths provided. Lots of soap, body wash and shampoo provided. There’s even a beach bag in the room for you to use/keep. Digital a/c controls and ceiling fan over the bed. Hairdryer, magnifying mirror on the wall, weight scale, clothesline in the shower, lots of hot water and great water pressure, digital safe, lots of closet space, iron with ironing board, coffee maker with coffee/sugar/powdered creamers etc…, minibar is stocked daily with water bottles, beer, coke, diet coke, sprite, Fanta, mineral water, apple juice, orange juice, a chocolate bar and a bag of chips. Beds are very firm. Sheets and pillows are very nice and good quality. No clock radio in the room. Wall-mounted flat screen 32 inch tv with lots of English channels. Sofa and coffee table as well.

Restaurants/Food – all excellent. Main buffet is large, fresh food with lots of choice and well presented. Dinner buffet has a Mariachi band roaming around and playing live music. Asian, Brazilian, Mexican and Gourmet restaurants on site as well. No reservations needed and no limit to how often you can eat at them. Plus there’s a 24hr snack bar on the beach and a sushi bar. Sushi was made to order on the spot and was really good. Room service is free and is 24hrs as well. During the day and most of the night there’s coffee/tea served in the lobby along with platters of fruit and cookies and small sweet rolls.

Staff – all very friendly and provide excellent service. Everyone is there to make your stay a pleasant one. Be nice to them and TIP THEM! They work like dogs and get paid on average $10 PER DAY! So please….tip these people.

Pools – main pool is small but very clean. There’s also a few smaller plunge pools in front of the other blocks. All clean but not heated so a bit cooler. There are no beach loungers around the pools but instead there are Bali beds all over the place.

Grounds – all really nice and manicured and well taken care of. Hammocks are around the resorts as well.

Beach – excellent for swimming and snorkelling. Most parts are easy to get into and free of rocks. Dive shop will lend out snorkel gear for free. Saw lots of turtles and stingrays. Lots of seaweed washed up on the shore (not the fault of the hotel) and they try and clean it up as best they can but it’s a losing battle. If the seaweed was gone the beach would be perfect. It might be just the time of year though. Lots of beach loungers and shade. You can walk forever down the beach. Sand is nice and soft. There are lots of snorkel tours that come in everyday all day long so it can get crowded in the water. Again not the fault of the hotel.

Spa – gorgeous setting in the jungle in front of the hotel. Excellent setting and excellent services provided. Had a massage and it was one of the best I’ve ever had. Staff were professional and friendly. Lots of different treatment rooms as well as a Jacuzzi and saunas.

Gym – small but functional located in the spa area.

Location – the hotel is about 1hr away from the airport depending on how often you stop to drop off or pick up others from their hotels. Distance from the front of the hotel to the main road is a short 5min walk so easy to get to the main road to grab the collectivo vans into Tulum or Playa Del Carmen. Cost of the collectivo is $3 each to Tulum or $3.50 each to Playa Del Carmen. Way cheaper than a taxi.

Public washrooms – some behind the front desk, some next to the lobby bar and some behind the beach snack bar. All kept clean and tidy.
Maid service – really well done and thorough. Make sure to TIP your maid daily!

Laundry – behind block #2 they’re setting up washers and dryers for guests to use. Great idea! I don’t think it’ll be free but I can’t see it being more than a few bucks per load.

Internet – FREE all over the resort, on the beach and in your room. It’s not the fastest connection but it’s free.

Towels – no limit to how many beach towels you can use and no stupid towel cards needed.

Nightly entertainment – it’s a low key resort so not a party place. They had musical bands or singing in the lobby. No actual shows.

I think that’s pretty much it. Don’t think I forgot too much. There’s no reason at all to not go here. It’s well worth it and worthy of a 5 star rating. One more staff member to make note of is the Public Relations Manager Zenia. She was pleasant, very friendly and made our stay exceptional. I honestly cannot find fault in anyone or anything at this resort. Food, service, staff, décor, furniture, rooms….all of it is just so nice and well done!
Note that next door a monster resort is being built but there really is no noise to speak of. GO and enjoy it!
