We returned from Akumal (unfortunately) a little over a month ago from our honeymoon. My husband and I spent a total of 7 nights there from July 8 - July 15. We got a superior ocean view room and were up on the third floor in the last building. What an ubelievable view!!!! When I show pictures to friends and family they are so jealous!

When we got to the airport we were immediately met by our Best Day tour people and put in a nice air conditioned van for our hour ride to the hotel. As soon as we got to the hotel the beautiful lobby simply took our breath away. It was a thatched roof, open air, gorgeous. Maybe it is because we had never been to Mexico and everything is beautiful on a honeymoon, but it was great. We were greeted and given nice cold drinks and before we could say anything our luggage was whisked away by a wonderful porter. The hostess (Veronica I believe) showed us to our room and when she discovered that I could speak Spanish was happy to converse with me in Spanish and with my husband in English. When we got to the room there was a beautiful swan towel sculpture on the bed scattered with read flowers. The room itself was very basic. We weren't expecting a five star and so we were not disappointed. It was a king bed, a rug, a counter / shelf, two nightstands and a tv in the ceiling corner. There was a huge sink area with separate rooms for the toilet and shower and a huge closet area with safe. What the room lacked for in looks though, it more than made up for with the view from the balcony. When we opened the curtain we knew we were in paradise. Sparkling blue water with white sand and rocks. Just gorgeous. We actually had had a very long travel day so we slept the first five hours we were there and woke up in time for dinner. Unfortunately the first full day it stormed all day (quite an adventure with a thatched roof restaurant) but after that the weather was pretty much gorgeous. We did have a problem in that our air conditioner was not working. But they immediately got people in there working and there was always a security guard with them. It was fixed by the middle of the next day after they installed a new motor. After that there were no problems at all.

The restaurants were nice. The buffet was always good with a wide range of food. Beware if you go, when fish is served it still has the head on it. I know that this is probably a European style and very appreciated but it did take me quite aback and make me lose my appetite. The guacamole is to DIE for. I never liked it before going there. I ate it every single lunch and dinner. And the view from the restaurant is worh every so-so meal you may have. In fact I keep a picture of the view from our table at my desk at work, I call it my relaxation corner. We went to the Mexican restaurant one night, the food was delicious. We never did make it to the Italian restaurant but we heard it was pretty typical Italian. I am a picky eater and could always find something to eat although if you are adventurous you will find SO much to eat. If you are a connoisseur of fine dining this is not the place for you. If you want good basic food with some specialties thrown in then go for it.

The bar is basic and not top shelf liquor but what do you want??? It is all-inclusive you're not having to tip, it's cold, it's refreshing and it's alcohol. If you are out to get smashed then you clearly are not having enough fun elsewhere on your trip. The service was always quick and the drinks did taste good.

The beach alone gives this resort a top billing. The hotel is parallel to the beach so it owns a huge strip of it. The sand is SO soft and the water warm and clear. You can snorkel right off of the beach and it is cheap to rent the equipment. A warning though, if you have not snorkeled and are claustrophobic this might not be for you as I unfortunately found out. My husband had a wonderful time too as did a couple we met. The trick -- take cereal at breakfast and bring it out snorkeling with you, sprinkle it in the water and the fish will come from everywhere. My husband saw a huge stingray and our friends saw turtles. I saw huge angel fish-type of creatures -- just gorgeous!! There are plenty of chairs but if you want a chair with fabric you must get out early! They get taken quickly. One trick, go down to the right of the restaurant. You can always find chairs and a palapa there and, if you so desire, it is more private for topless sunbathing. We never did make it into the pool the ocean was so incredible.

The staff was wonderful. Both the animation team and the regular staff. I did not notice at all people discriminating against us because we wore yellow bands. In fact I think more people tried to talk to us. It did help to speak Spanish and they were very courteous when my husband made valiant efforts to communicate in Spanish!! It was so much fun with so much offered during the day to do but you never felt too pressured to do anything but lay on the beach in the sun.

The other guests, yes some people were snobby but at the same time look at how a lot of Americans act!! We were there when a new group of Americans arrived and boy were they obnoxious!! Loud and brash so hey, can you blame anyone else?? I loved the opportunity to be in the minority for once and hear other beautiful languages. Plus I thought it was pretty neat to be able to identify where people were from. It became a game almost.

As for the entertainment, Lupo and Celia are the main bar entertainment. While we almost died during their rendition of "American Pie" their enthusiasm and energy made up for it -- as did her impression of Shakira (DEAD on) and his of Frank. There are shows to go to pretty much every night and by the end of the trip you MUST do the dance with the staff. It is addicting and almost required!! If you are looking for a thriving nightlife this is not it. We did not even get out to Cozumel or Playa, we were perfectly content to stay where we were.

We did take tours through Best Day to Tulum and Chichen Itza. I am a Spanish teacher so they were must-dos. I highly recommend Best Day because there were no more than 12 people per tour -- much better than the groups of 40 or 50 we saw. Prices were good, everything was wonderful.

Some things to consider:
If you are at all out of shape or not really fashionable it can be very intimidating to be there at times. The Italian men and women look like they have just walked off of a runway. If you own white linen, you must bring it. If you don't, go out and get some! At the same time, you don't need really fancy clothes at all.

Bring washcloths, there aren't any there. That would have been nice to know ahead of time.

Don't wait too long for breakfast or the palapas are gone when you are done.

If you want a good table seat at the bar area don't go past say 8 or 8:30.

If you stay in the 700 building, stay towards the 740 area. To the right is I believe their sewage area so when it is super hot and the wind blows just right you can get some unpleasant whiffs.

Bring TONS of film, you'll use it.

We absolutely loved it there and every single day we wish to go back. For a honeymoon, it was just what we wanted. I am sure other places would have been more luxurious or romantic but it was nothing short of perfect for us. If you want any information or a link to see pictures, email me and I'll be glad to help!!

We just got back today from Akumal. The hotel was great. Our room was a superior ocean view in the 600 building. Great view of the sunrise. Never had any problems witht the food and I was always full. I had to laugh at the pizza topping selections at the snack bar. Hot dog, tuna, and salami were not big movers.
Be sure to go snorkeling very awsome right in front of the kayak rental. I used two underwater disposable cameras, and I think I got some great pictures.
Took a trip to Tulum be sure to get some water before you take the tram because it is hot. Very beautiful and interesting. The collectivo will take you to the driveway that leads to the parking lot for just a few pasos.

Where do I start....We vacationed at the ABR 7/22 - 7/30 and new it was rated 3 stars so we didnt expect alot. I found the accomodations better then expected. Upon arrival we were greeted by our first names, our rooms were not ready (we were early) so we were escorted to the lunch buffet and by the time we finished lunch our ocean front room was ready. I loved the location of the room which was in an older building. I took 3 steps off the patio and i was on the beach...also beautiful sunrises each morning.
The rooms are basic but clean.

FOOD - It was OK. Not horrible but not great. We tried both the restaurants and really didnt find them any better then the buffet...just less choices.

STAFF - The waiters and bartendes were great...There are 3 bars our favorite was the swing bar at the end of the beach next to our room. If you go tell Ruby we miss her.

BEACH- The beach alone could give this resort a 10....We have been to many places and this beach is by far the best. We picked this resort for this reason. We have a 11 year old boy who loves turtles and he swam with them every day. The water is clean, calm and just beautiful. You can rent snorkeling gear for $5 a day if you go alot take your own. No need to go out very far so you dont need flippers.

SCUBA - Great scuba team. My son learned to dive with Sky and the Scuba Venture team. This was his first dive and he loved it. They also will take you out on snorkeling trips. Tell Emelianos we said hi if you stop in.

We plan to return to the ABR next year. We have been to Mexico several times and we always like to try different places but this beach is so beautiful i cant wait to return. It is a small resort..not sure why the one review complained about walking, i have been to the Iberostar and could have used a golf cart to get around. No nightlife so dont go to party. The main bar is open late with music and dancing. Also there are shows each night.

THINGS TO TAKE -
Large cup...the ones they give you are very small.
Wash cloth...
There is no bottled water only water coolers outside the rooms. I found the water was always warm. They do supply the rooms with a small water jug...i took my own and asked the bar to fill it with ice and water at the end of the day and stored it in our room.

I could go on and on about our stay..if you have any questions I will be happy to answer them just e-mail me (spetunia@ptdprolog.net)

We got a great deal on the internet for our trip of 2 weeks from November 5-19, 2003. Now we know why.

We got there late at night (9 PM) and had to endure a big welcome just to grab our luggage and HIKE to the other end of the resort. When we got into our room, I was, quite frankly, STUNNED at how terrible it looked! I mean, it was surface clean, but it had a low-end, shoddy look to everything. ESPECIALLY the bathroom. What I thought was mold was actually chipped away paint. The floor of the shower looked suspect...I wore water shoes when showering. Really. This was your average room. I find it funny that they quoted someone $20 per night for upgrades....they quoted me $50 USD per night PER PERSON...that upgrade would have cost us 1300 USD. We said no thanks.

The food.....well, it was barely tolerable, for the most part. It's pretty obvious the clientele they're pursuing are Italian....more than 1/3 of all menu items were Italian. IN the morning we joked about knowing what nationality people were by seeing their plates.......sweet breads and a large load of them meant Italians.

The wait staff.....we were told they all spoke "acceptable" english. We found that most of them wouldn't talk to you if you were English speaking. Most of the ones we saw spoke Spanish and Italian. A few were exceptional....and they were exceptionally tipped for it.

Staff in general....incredibly rude! We were woken up 2 nights running, at 3 AM by workers outside our room. WHO HAULS CORAL AND THROWS IN ON CEMENT OUTSIDE GUEST ROOMS AT 3 AM? I yelled at the 5 men.....who laughed at me and continued. My husband got up and yelled...they disappeared. The next night it was something else...but again, it was 3 AM and they were working outside our room. We complained to guest services....they apologized but had "no idea" why they would have done that. My comment was they probably didn't invent the work....they were instructed by someone to do it...

Other issues:

-most staff barely spoke english. Front desk folks didn't appear to speak ANY.
-leather shoes would have been tastier than most of the meat dishes they served

Our biggest bone:

We couldn't stand 95% of the guests, who were, apparently European. Snobby wouldn't really cover it.....but rude, demeaning and pushy would! Our neighbours, one night, decided to stay at the disco (which sounded like it was in our bathroom) until 3 am, and then thought it would be fun to come back to the room, yell and scream, and slam doors and windows. Lets just say, 1.5 hours later, we returned the favor 10 fold....we cranked up the TV and spent 5 minutes just slamming our door. Open, slam...open, slam...you get the picture. Not only did they not apologize, they then thought it would be great to try and be as rude as possible when they saw us. We didn't rise......we just smiled and said a cheery "HOLA!" when we saw them every day.

We absolutely would NOT return to this resort. Unless it was free, and we were guaranteed that we'd have the best room and not have to talk to other guests!! We had been to the El Dorado Resort & Spa twice prior to this trip. Now while we realize that is not a 5* resort, calling the ABR a 3* is quite frankly a lie. 2* maybe. EDRS had beach bar service (they serve you); and amazing staff and guests who were, for the most part, friendly! Everyone we've met there we're still in touch with. We had 2 conversations at the ABR...one woman I met was wonderful. She was from Belgium and we had a great visit on the beach. One other couple saw we were English speaking (yellow wrist band) and stopped to ask a question. That was it. We're both very outgoing.....but the guests were duds.

This trip was very disappointing. We're looking at the Sunscape Tulum this year.... or will return to the EDRS. We prefer adults only but our biggest thing is the snorkelling, and the size ~ we're from a small town of 450 and the thought of 1200 rooms makes me sick!! I couldn't handle that many people fighting for dinner...

UPSIDE:
The area! We loved Akumal and left the resort every day to go to this little "town"! Yal Ku was a do-able walk and was fantastic. La Buena Vida, in Akumal, was a favorite haunt. We spent a lot of time there. The snorkelling at ABR was phenomenal...but I'll catch a collectivo from where ever I stay next time (in 4 months) rather than torture myself at the ABR.
