“Would go back in a heartbeat; recommending to everyone.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2011

Our first trip to Mexico. The resort was 2 hours away from Cancun airport, and after being there we are glad it was. I appreciated that it was in natural surroundings...ocean, resort, jungle. We were close to the excursions we wanted to do, and loved how you knew you were in Mexico (as opposed to a hotel in Cancun; which we also stayed at) The staff were friendly and fun, they were in uniforms to help create the atmosphere, safari clothes, mexican uniforms for housekeeping, I like feeling we were "away" The food at the buffet was more than enough, and we were pleasantly impressed as we had no idea what to expect. The a-la-cartes we experienced were a nice, but not necessary, we only used 2 of our 4 as the buffet was convienent.
The beach was beautiful and very well maintained. The resort worked very hard at getting the resort back to an "untouched" look and feel each morning you woke up.

I appreicated the assistance from all the Guest Services and the overall friendly feel. I also appreicated the sense of pride I saw and felt from all the staff everyday.

I can see now why people would return yearly to the same resort. I've always wondered why you wouldn't explore and experience more, but when it's that good it's hard to take a chance anywhere else. We stayed 2 days and one night in RIU Cancun our last days and it was night and day. In Cancun I could have been anywhere in the world at a hotel, at Gran Bahia I knew I was on a Mexican Vacation.

“Beautiful resort, friendly staff, don't use the ATM in the lobby”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2011

We found this resort to be beautiful
The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Everyone smiles and says 'ola' when they see you.
Our chambermaid Fidelia was a real sweetheart. Our room had a nice size bed, full size couch, patio, spacious bathroom, bar size fridge. Lots of storage space.
The buffet had a huge assortment of food.
The seafood ala carte was delicious.
When we checked out the credit card machine at the front desk was not working so we had to use the ATM in the lobby to get cash to clear up our bill.
Leonard was working at the front desk and assured us that the ATM only cost three, four dollars at the most. When I checked our bank statement the cost for using that ATM is $40!
The only sour note in a wonderful vacation.

“Really Enjoyed our Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2011

Stayed at this hotel in December and only just got round to writing a review because there is so much to write about – I have missed quite a lot out!

We arrived in the evening, straight away we were really impressed the lobby is beautiful and check-in was really efficient the front desk staff were really helpful advising where main points of interest on the resort map. We got to our room and were really impressed really spacious room with two double beds, the bathroom was really nice and spacious also – one bad point about the room was the wardrobe had a really musty smell to it which got onto our clothes after a few days so we had to air our clothes out before wearing them! (Not nice).

The resort is (as everyone has mentioned) absolutely HUGE we got lost so many times our first couple of days and that was just in Akumal! One day we walked back from Coba and it took about 45 minutes because we kept taking wrong turns. We found it a bit of a chore sometimes having to wait for the little buses and go to the different resorts if we had reservations in the a la carte restaurants. The beach is nice, rocky in parts especially near Akumal and you can’t really go swimming in the Sea, the red flag was up every day that we were there. It didn’t bother me so much because we spent a lot of time at the activities pool in Akumal which is brilliant, really good atmosphere – we went to the main pool with the pool bar but it was quite boring. We went to Coba one day but the weather wasn’t that great so I think it put a dampener on the atmosphere there!

The shows of an evening are good not spectacular but nice to see once. They do rotate on a weekly basis; however they finish around 9.30/10pm so if you wanted to give them a miss you can just go for a late dinner or something. We heard the Michael Jackson show at Coba is brilliant but unfortunately both times we had reservations so missed it. The lobby bar closes at 11pm in time for those wanting a later drink to go to the Hacienda for Salsa and the Club which is open until 2.30. Loved the environment at Hacienda whilst the live band were on the staff do ask people to come up and salsa but if you don’t want to they won’t force you; it’s just a really nice relaxed. We liked the Club but it did get a bit boring at the end of the stay because were went 9 nights out of the 14!

You can use the buffet restaurants at all three parts of the resort, we ate mostly at the Akumal buffet (because it was the closest) but we did go to Coba for lunch and I’ve got to say it was superior to Akumal. Didn’t eat at Tulum buffet so can’t comment. During our stay we ate at 5 a la carte restaurants (missed one reservation due to a mix up on days, our fault) the best is Mikado Japanese restaurant absolutely beautiful even when you walk in and before you have tasted the food you instantly know it’s going to be good! Wish we would have booked it first (it was our last reservation) so we could have gone there again for in our last week. Don Pablo (which we booked by accident) at Tulum was amazing as well, I had a steak and it was cooked to perfection, the staff were fantastic as well. We also at the Mediterranean restaurant at Coba and really nice choice of food and the Brazilian restaurant it was lovely also. I would advise against the Italian Restaurant in Akumal (Dolce Vita) the worst meal I had the whole stay – had a lasagne and it was like mush absolutely horrible. I have however heard great things about the Portofino Italian at Coba. The 24 hour snack bars are ok, the snack bar at Akumal is ok but nothing special. Coba snack bar is a lot nicer (a lot of people go there after the club closes) and they have chunky chips.

When we arrived we were quite worried that the resort was going to be a bit quiet for us, and granted it is quite far away from the main towns (approx 30-40mins to Playa del Carmen and over an hour to Cancun) but there was so much to do during the day and of an evening you can’t get bored. We went into the town a few times when we were there and that was fantastic too, one night we went to playa del carmen and the taxi driver waited for us until we went were ready to go home and didn’t charge over the odds. Overall had a fantastic stay, the staff and the other guests really friendly – you will be guaranteed to make new friends from all different parts of the world!

As I said I’ve missed a lot out so if anyone needs anymore information please feel free to message me!

“Well Worth It”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2011

Hotel is 1h40 min away from Cancun Airport. Beautiful and well maintain. This hotel is made up of three parts- Tulum, Aukumal, and Coba.Hotel hired very friendly staff. They may not know your name but they will remember which villa you stat at. We stayed @ Villa 6626 of the Beachfront.Excellent room. Maid fold animal towel daily. Food, staff, bed, stay, location was excellent. They even ship sand in to top up the beach @ 12am.The only minor thing was, if you try to shower after 8pm, you may not get hot water. I did called front desk @ 12;30am ,and they sent a person up to have a look in just 5 min. The water temperature was just enough when we shower at night. Tulum has the best Buffet. Staff were so friendly and helpful. I would recommand this hotel to anyone who wants a great time.

“Excelent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2011

I stayed in this resort last year and decided to write a review now because I just returned from a different resort and it came no where near my experience at this one. The food was incredible, the grounds and room were immaculate, and the staff extremely friendly. The grounds are 'Huge,' Gran Bahia Akumel/Coba and Tulum are all joint, so the resort is the size of three in one.
During my last trip all I could think about was how I wanted to be back in this one.
