“We had an amazing holiday at this awesome resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

We enjoyed everything about this resort. We were at the Akumal so had access to all of the other resorts as well. Our room was a good size and very clean and comfortable. The buffets and a la carte restaurants were all amazing....the food was good and an incredible amount of choices at the buffet. All the staff at the resort worked so hard and were very pleasant and eager to please. The ocean was great, nice sand at the beaches and we enjoyed both the sheltered area where we could snorkel and see some fish swimming around as well as the areas where there were waves to play in. The resort grounds were beautiful and well kept. There were so many pools to choose from and they were very clean and the water was the perfect temperature. This is a very large resort but it was easy to get around with the trolleys that came by every few minutes. We only went to one of the evening shows. It was the magic show and it was amazing. I was travelling with my husband, 15 year old son and 12 year old daughter and we all enjoyed this resort immensely. We felt very pampered. We had a butler assigned to us and we received phone calls at our room a few different times just checking to make sure we had everything we needed.

My wife and I along with another couple just came back from a week's vacation at Akumal, the staff was great, friendly and did everything to make sure that all of our needs were met.
The butler assigned to us was exceptional his name was Mishel, he went out of his way to ensure that whatever was required was delivered, his customer service is excellent.
If you ever go there try and get him as your butler.
Paula was our concierge and she did a terrific job at checking us into the resort and made sure we were getting everything to make our stay a memorable one.....and it surely is a memorable vacation.

Room Tip: Ask for 6700 block or one with ocean frontage.

We had an amazing vacation at this resort! If you like shallow crystal clear ocean to swim in, this is the place.
It was luxury all the way. We had a butler who was so detail oriented and professional. If you get the chance ask for Joan, he's the best.
The food was mostly good. They had so many options at the buffet, something for everyone. I will say the snack bar could use improvement.
We are already planning our return here next year, I can't wait!

Glad we chose to stay in Akumal section as that gave us access to the other three resorts. Our room was always clean, anything we needed they provided. Stayed March 31 to April 7. Three of us in the room, one King size bed and one double worked perfectly. Theatre bar had the best drinks. Took a taxi to Akumal for snorkeling with turtles and fish, was there early in the morning before it got crowded. Used a local guide at a cost of $25.00 USD per person, he provided all the equipment and guaranteed seeing turtles or money refunded. Saw lots of turtles and fish and by the time our hour was up the beach was starting to get crowded with tour groups. Also took a taxi to Tulum ruins and then to the town of Tulum. In Tulum we wanted to buy a piece of jewellery from a shop we had visited back in 2008 and bought an original piece then. We found the shop on the main road and was happy that he was still designing and making jewelery. The owner and jewelery maker of Las Joyas De Adelita has some beautiful pieces and such a nice man. Not like all those jewelery stores in Playa De Carmen where all the jewelery is the same in store after store. We enjoyed going to the Saan Kaan section of the hotel to visit the buffet for dessert. Most nights they had a chocolate fountain and lots of fruit to dip with chocolate. If you visit the jewelery store in this section of the hotel they will take you to their factory store Matis and then take you into Playa de Carmen to look around. I would visit this hotel again and recommend it to friends. We also used private transportation to and from the airport instead of having to wait for the bus to load and maybe having to stop at other hotels. Canada Transfers was the company we used and we will use them again.

Overall a great resort with plentiful daytime action and an abundance of food with a few spots of great cuisine.

Recently spent a week at the Gran Bahia Akumal and being my second time to Riviera Maya I can speak, a little, to this resort versus others.

Daytime Pros:
-There is a ton to do at this resort as a short tram ride takes you to one of the four huge properties they have.
-Don't like a certain pool or swim up bar? They will get you to any other number of pools!
-Activity pools, massages by the pool, lots of drinks, long stretch of ocean front property, swim up bars, contests, jacuzzi pools all make a great day time for those that with to be social or just want to find a corner of a beach and relax.
-The buffets are very well done and the food ranges from okay to very tasty with many different options and cultures represented.
-There is a 24 hour snack bar so you can get a bite to eat anytime at all, most of the day it's buffet style and after those hours it's a waitered service with full bar as well.

Daytime Cons:
-They utilize towel cards and you only get one towel per person. Day one someone stole our towels so we had to have our Lomas Travel on-site representative call to give us more towel cards
-NO FREE WIFI - $50 a week to use it all throughout or free ONLY in the lobby - Be prepared to see TONS of people in the lobby facetiming and such.
-NO FREE GOLF - We were lured in with FOUR FREE ROUNDS OF GOLF - But it was a sham. $100 per person for a cart (even if you share a cart, it's $100 per person) - $45 for club rental (Calloway older model) and minimum for three golf balls is $15 and there are none supplied to you ($24 for pro v1x balls)
-Early morning swimmers will find it tough to get shade at the pools, not until around noon do the buildings give you shade in the water. (There are plenty of umbrellas by the chairs for shade out of the water)
-Seat saving..... people get out early and save seats all day. We even witnessed an incident where a large group bullied their way close to the water and were aggressive towards some friends we met when they asked for their seats back. Our group of four usually could find, at most, 2 chairs together after we got to the pool around 11am each day.
-At Akumal the swim up bar pool is very warm. Bath water warm, hopefully that has nothing to do with the swim up bar :)
-The waiter/waitress service at the activities pool is slow and sometimes nonexistent. There is a bar close by, but you have to get out to get a drink.

Night-time Pros:
-They set up outdoor bars before dinner with cool lighting and outdoor staff. Many people gather around and it's very social.
-Akumal has a great theatre with decent one hour shows each night. During the shows there is also usually a tequila and coffee tasting stations that you can just walk up to and partake in (I noticed about 20 different tequilas)
-Trams run all the time so you can go to any of the resorts and get back safely.
-The Hacienda has outdoor music each night and is a very nice place with an ocean breeze and all the little trinket shops surrounding it.
-The casino is nice, but small. I say it's nice as I won money! But they don't seem to turn the A/C on in there, as on three trips it was always hot.

Night-time Cons:
-We booked our "A la Carte" dinners an hour after check-in on the first day and most restaurants were already booked through at least 10pm. The whole "need a reservation" for these fancy meals are one of the worst things about it. (TIP: Get a reservation on the night you want, but you can usually walk in early and it will be half empty)
-A/C is not very powerful in rooms. It felt cool at night, but if you are a warm sleeper you will be hot every night no matter what.
-The pools shut DOWN by 5-6pm. Literally, the whole resort shuts down with water stuffs and bars by 6pm. No swimming, bars close, not much to do except wait for dinner.
-Not a lot of spots for nightlife. No oceanside bars, no choices, there is just the outdoor bars before dinner and after dinner there is the hacienda (which gets busy) or the snack bar (which is a covered building with open walls so it gets a breeze but it's lit like a warehouse) After the hacienda closes at 11:30 the only thing open is the disco.
-Disco is the only thing open late with poor A/C and loud music which is only what music Mexican DJs thinks is appropriate (Beegees, into cotton-eyed joe and other horrible songs)

Overall, the daytime things to do and the good food at the restaurants try to make up for the poor nightlife and party atmosphere for the younger crowd. I would stay here again, but get the party-ing done up front, take a nap and then ride out the quiet night with some dinner a maybe a drink or two before the place has nothing to do past 11:30pm.

Room Tip: Most rooms seem to be close to something, most pools are within a 3 minute walk of each other. I re...

My experience at the Grand Bahia Principe Akumal was absolutely flawless. From check-in to check-out, every need was taken car of at any time. The service was amazing and the staff were very friendly! And the food... wow. I have never seen such an amazing assortment of buffet options, and the a la carte restaurants were truly an experience with even better food! The grounds itself are very well taken care of and your room will always be clean. I can't say enough good things about this resort! Definitely recommended!

Myself & my partner holidayed here in March, and had a fab time. We were able to use all the facilities at all 4 Principe complexes, so never short of anything to do or somewhere different to eat.
The staff are a real credit to the hotels in all complexes. They were always very courteous and willing to help.
Every where was spotlessly clean from the grounds to the pools to the rooms.
The rooms were cleaned every day and beds made immaculately. They were spacious with a king size bed and had everything you needed.
The food was excellent in the buffet as were most of the a la carte restaurants we visited . The Dolce vita had nice food but not really a very Italian menu. The only disappointing meal was at The Mikado Japanese at the Coba hotel. Every course we had was Luke warm as we weren't served at the chefs griddle and it was as though it had been pre-prepared and kept to one side. The Don Pablo and the Rodizio were our favourites.
Great being right on the beach , which was very clean .so you got the choice of that or sunbathing around any of the pools.
We did a few trips aswell and would thoroughly recommend Xelha park and Tulum ruins.
Overall couldn't fault much at all , would definitely recommend to family and friends and will definitely return.
As we were impressed with the Principe chain, we are hoping to try the one in Jamaica next year.
