I enjoyed my week at this resort. It was great! all the way around.I met my 4 other sisters who met me there from Canada. I came from the US. We had the greatest time. The cleanliness was impressive. The food great. The activities and excursions really fun.
I want to go back with my husband.

We had a great time in Grand Bahia Principe. We stayed in Akumal, in a room near Akumal lobby, but enjoyed all the complex: Coba, Tulum and Hacienda Dona Isabel. The staff is really friendly and made us feel really welcome! Loved it!

We had a great time on our first all inclusive holiday experience. Very well run with Enthusiastic friendly staff. Excellent choice of entertainment and restaurants. The resort was enhanced by having 3 centres supplying a variety of experiences. Akumal was close to beach. Coba had kids club and nice vibe for evening entertainment. Tulum had the dolphin experience. If you wanted late night entertainment the Hacienda provided it away from the accommodation so no problems with noise. Very impressed with resort and holiday went too quickly.

Room Tip: We stayed in block 51 close to main reception which worked well for us. No real views but close to a...

5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2014

We stayed at the Grand Bahia Principe Akumal for one week two weeks ago. We stayed in one of their Club Suites, Room 6901. The room location was great, being just near the beach and the two swimming pools. The room itself was very clean, large and good facilities. We stayed with our 2 year old son. We flew with First Choice who advertise the Dreamliner for this location. Travelling with a two year old, we decided to upgrade to the Premier seats. We were extremely disappointed not to be on the Dreamliner, but an old First Choice plane. When I questioned that with the rep at the Hotel, he was very sorry, but told us that the Dreamliner was not used for this long haul flight. On the return as there was no premier seats available, we paid a supplement for extra leg room. Imagine our surprise when we boarded the plane on our return to find it was actually a Dreamliner. I did go back on to the Thomson website to check this and it does state Dreamliner for the flights to Cancun. The extra legroom on the Dreamliner is great and in future I would not book the premier seats again, but would book the extra legroom, as long as I could confirm beforehand that we would be travelling on the Dreamliner. The Hotel is actually 3 resorts in one, you have Coba, Tulum and Akumal. Personally, we preferred Akumal, but all three resorts had their good points. Coba has a great water park for little ones, which our son absolutely loved. The organisation to get to the other resorts is via little trains, again which our son loved. They run around all three resorts and will stop at any time to let you on. The drivers were all extremely helpful especially with a toddler in a buggy. The resort itself is immaculately clean, with on-going maintenance all the time, we were really impressed by this. Even though Thomson had said because we did not have an infant we could not book a cot, there was one in our Hotel room when we arrived. We had requested a ground floor apartment and this they accommodated, which was great. There are two swimming pools at Akumal. The smaller one is a little livelier with entertainment throughout the day. The entertainment was fantastic with a parrot show one day and another day they had all the children bashing the life out of a pinata, which was great fun. All the staff ensured that the sweets were evenly given out to all the children, they were extremely caring. The larger pool we spent more time at, as this had small areas where it was shaded and the great bonus for us with this pool was the shelves which were about 10 inches deep which allowed our son to play in, whilst we could watch him and relax. The larger pool was fantastically set out with bridges and hot tubs in one area, so covered really everything for adults and children. Again the pool area was constantly being cleaned and tidied. We never had any problems with getting a bed by the pool and whilst we were there they brought out more sunbeds as the resort got busier. As we were staying in one of the Club rooms we were allowed 4 al a carte meals for the week. We did have a little difficulty in getting some of these booked, we were given early reservations, but as we had a toddler it wasn't too bad, but we did have to eat at 5.30 in two of them. I can imagine this being frustrating for anyone who wanted a later booking. The first one we booked was Arlequin, which was lovely, the service was great and the food was good. The second one was Oasis, which we were a little disappointed as although it was al a carte, it was still a buffet for our starter and our dessert. The third was the brazillian at Tulum, again this was a buffet for starter and dessert, but this is quite normal for this type of restaurant. We have been to one of these restaurants before in Florida, where you have the green and red cards and you turn the cards over depending on how much meat you wished. The one in Florida we went to, was rated as one of the best restaurants there, so we had been spoilt before. It is pretty good, when you remember this is an all inclusive hotel. Service here wasn't as good and my husband did get a little frustrated at times in trying to order drinks. The last restaurant we visited was the Gourmet at Coba, which unfortunately we were disappointed in, which is a shame as we left this to our last night. Service and food did not live up to the Arlequin. The buffet restaurant was fantastic, with a great variety of food at breakfast, lunch and dinner. At breakfast they even had tomato juice and Smirnoff, if you wished to start your day with a bloody mary!! Great choice for breakfast, if I'm going to be picky the only thing missing was poached or soft boiled eggs, but that is just personal preference. Lunch was great, again a great variety, although we did like going to the 24 hour snack bar, although a smaller selection of food, you were able to sit outside and people watch. I was addicted to their guacomole, jalopenos and tortilla chips. Dinner in the restaurant was good and I would say better than some of the al a carte. We did eat lunch in the Tulum buffet, but didn't find it as good as Akumal. There was evening entertainment in the bars and shows every night, we didn't go to any of the shows so cannot comment on this. The main thing we loved about this resort was the versatility, it didn't feel like you were stuck in one Hotel as you could go to one of the other resorts, so never got bored. I would also like to mention the amazing waiter at the swim up bar at the large pool in Akumal who was amazing every day, in mixing cocktails, very professional and fast. My husband thought he was outstanding. We have stayed at some other all inclusive hotels and never been particularly impressed, but this has turned us around. We would definitely book again and recommend it to friends and family. We would look at booking direct through the Hotel and arranging our own flights as we felt Thomson were not very good at all. The management of this Hotel should be really proud of what they have achieved and the staff they have working here. Amazing, can't wait to go back!!! Oh and the cocktails were fantastic!!!

Room Tip: If you can upgrade to one of the Club Rooms, you have a personal check in service and they seem to b...

Just got back from a great week at GBPAkumal. I would say my review is 90% positive but a few things that wasn't my favorite....It's a wonderful hotel, very clean, the staff very helpfull and nice, the room was pretty, bed was comfortable(king bed, we were in the block 49, great place, near the pool, lobby and beach but not a beach view), the site well taken care off...but very very large resort(including Coba and Tulum)...The food was great but like any other all inclusive, after 4-5 days, it gets repetitive...We tried the "a la carte" (sadly very difficult to get).. Don Pablo, superb! Gran Tortuga and Tequila was really good too, but the appetizer and dessert part was buffet style...
Big pool, it's better to reserve places in the morning...but plenty of room at the beach...if you can't find any, go straight to your right, where the "Golden" part is and you will find some...with a beach bar(hummingbird drink, yummy!!), mexican music, no line up and you can do snorkling in the little lagoon, which was great! We didn't have any beach shoes but there are rocks in most parts of the beach(from one end to the other) only few spots with sand all the way...
The shows at night were really good, great entertainment, we saw the Circus, Acro Dance and Michael Jackson!
You can use the shuttle all around the Resort to visit, go to the other restaurants, shows and the Market at the Hacienda(same kind of stuff/souvenirs as the 5th Ave in Playa)
We did take the public transport/Collectivo to the Tulum Ruins for a few bucks, safe and cheap!
Overall a great experience and a wonderfull hotel!

Room Tip: Block 49 is near from everything...

stayed 5 nights in akumal jr suite garden view. resort was very clean and beautiful. with gold club membership you have access to Tulum, Coba and Hacienda property. this resort is very large with shuttle trains to get from place to place on the resort. food was excellent. pools are really nice. beach sand is course and a little tough on the feet walking. coral rock in the water so be careful, kids may want to wear beach slippers. surf breakers to preserve the beach are in the water and take away from the beauty of the ocean but snorkeling was pretty good off the beach. Beach in front of Tulum was better. you have many options at this resort (dining, premier club, etc..) which I found to be to many decisions to make while i'm on vacations. However, I would recommend this resort for families and couples alike. enjoyed the stay. got a free massage in exchange for a 90 minute time share sales pitch. They say it's not a time share but it really is. Mexican feasta fun shows are OK entertainment staff are friendly and provide some fun games at the pool.

Room Tip: get a room within walking distance from the beach otherwise you'll have to take a shuttle as pro...

Just returned from 2 weeks with First Choice. Flight on Dreamliner brilliant and well worth paying the supplement for extra legroom seats rather than the premier seats. Also worth paying the extra £40 taxi from cancun to the resort as this hotel is the last drop off and you have to wait a long time for the other passengers to get through the nightmare snail pace passport control. Only took us just over an hour by private taxi.

Fortunate to be upgraded to the golden suites which gave you 8 a la carte meals for the 2 weeks instead of 6. As previous reviews book these ASAP as they book up quickly. Recommend the show table at the Japanese, the Don Pablo, the Arlequin and if you like meat you will love the Brazilian!

Buffet restaurant is huge and the food tends to be just lukewarm. Recommend the Dolce Vita for breakfast and lunch not as much choice but nicer ambience.

Study the map they provide early on as this gives you the route of the trolley shuttle service and helps you plan where you are going but the drivers are always happy to help.

We preferred the evening bar at Tulum, the live groups were better and a nicer setting, only downside being that they finished at 10 pm and you then had to go to the Hascienda for further entertainment.

Use the Collectivo transport at the highway but don't get in the first one you see walk to the bus stop as the first one won't set off until it's full. We used it to ge to Playa del Carmen (worth a visit) and Akumal beach (def worth visiting). Bring snorkel gear and you will see turtles and stingray. Don't need to join a group you can just follow them and as soon as there are a group together they will have found something interesting to see.

Went to Chitzen Itza with Thomson/first choice. Very good trip and they arrive early to miss the crouds and the heat of the day.

There's a daily copied newspaper at the customer service desk and also books at the First Choice desk.

Overall an excellent holiday made even better by the wonderful friendly Mexican people.
