5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2014

My husband an myself have just came back from the Grand Bahia Principe Akumal stayed for 14 night,
After reading other comments I was ready for some problems but did not have one, The staff was very friendly from the booking in to the checking out, we stayed in the Gold section of the hotel but other than getting a 4th alacart and a Gold lobby to check in at its not worth the upgrade as the rest of the facilities at the hotel are fantastic.
The rooms are very clean an comfortable, we asked for a sea view but did not get that but it did not matter as the complex is beautiful.
My advice to anyone going to this complex is that make use of all the hotels an facilities on the site try all the buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner you will never get bored.
All the alacarts are great the best ones we found were the Don Pablo (in the Coba) and the Le Gournmet in the Coba) men have to wear long trouser to these one but it’s well worth it.
The beach is as some people say its not the best but they have made it as nice as can be, there are plenty of sun loungers and lots of shade if needed everywhere on the complex.
We was very sad to be coming home and will look forward to another holiday here.

Room Tip: Block 66/67 sea view

We have vacationed on the Riveria Maya a few times and this was our first trip to the Gran Bahia Principe Akumal. This resort is well maintained and had beautiful grounds everywhere we ventured. We had a very pleasant family vacation after a rocky beginning. This resort could do a couple things to make this a better review. Some of the things I didn’t like aren’t uncommon to other all-inclusive resorts in the area. I’ll start with the cons.
-We had booked the golden package and were placed in building 52 which is quite a hike to the beach. With small kids this was not acceptable. We complained and after a few days were moved to building 66 which is right on the beach and awesome! I had emailed the resort a couple times prior to our arrival requesting 66 after reading the reviews on here. It is not possible to reserve a water view room prior to arriving. If you don’t get building 47,65,66 or 67 you will not have a good view of the water. I would return again if I could specifically book a waterfront room. I’d gladly pay extra. I ventured down to Tulum and it looked like many more building had good views of the water.
- The restaurant reservation system is horrible. We tried to book our reservations to restaurants the day we arrived and were told that many restaurants were unavailable for the entire seven days we were there except for very late times. They need more dinner restaurants for the amount of guests.
- The Golden Reception area was often only staffed with one person and wait times were extremely long.
- The drink mixes are not good. However, this has been the case at all the all-inclusive resorts on the Riviera Maya that we’ve stayed at. The mixes have an after taste and most taste remarkably similar. We finally figured out to just stick with basic drinks as vodka tonic or rum and coke.
- The theme restaurants are only open for a generic buffet for lunch. We figured that if we couldn’t get in at night then we could visit during the day. Not the case. They had the same buffet everyday. Eating buffets for breakfast and lunch got tiresome after seven days.
Pros
- The beaches are plentiful and you can find many different varieties from crowed and fun to isolated and quiet. However, the Euro practice of reserving loungers early in the morning has infested the Riviera Maya. If you don’t reserve your lounger by breakfast it is hard to find a quality one until late in the day. The snorkeling right in front of the hotel is good and is protected. It was better than the other resorts I’ve stayed at. This was a gift with children.
- They have a good selection of water toys if the weather conditions are calm enough. We took out a hobie cat (free 1 hr per day) and had a blast. Unfortunately the wind was only calm enough on one day during our vacation to use the water toys. This is what happened the last time we vacationed in Mexico. It must be very windy in March.
- The staff was amazing. Everyone is so kind and pleasant. This really added to our enjoyment on our trip.
-The food was very good for a resort of this size. The Brazilian restaurant and Japanese were our favorites. I good tip to the hostess might get you into an "unavailable" restaurant.
- The shows were very entertaining. They start at 9pm which was difficult for my 7 year old after a day on the beach. The AcroDance show was incredible! Elvis and Michael Jackson were also impressive. Skip the 70’s/80’s show.

Room Tip: Book the golden package and hope for the best.

It was a belated honeymoon for me and my husband and the staff could not do enough for us. The place has everything you need for a very relaxing stay. I always said I would never travel to a 'long haul' destination and not explore but it was so relaxing and just what we needed after working so hard.

Me and my husband stayed here for a week at the beginning of March, after a tour round the Yucatan area. We had upgraded to the golden rooms and when we arrived we were allocated a room in the 59 block, I requested an ocean front room but was told we had a really good sea view and if not happy to return the next day. The room was very large, four poster bed and sitting area, and yes a sea view but not overlooking the beach. When we slept in the bed that night we realised it had a dip in the middle, we ended up rolling into the centre of it on numerous occasions throughout the night. We went to see Ricardo, in the golden reception area, who then arranged for us to be moved the next day, to block 66, it's right on the beach and had a fantastic view, so thank you Ricardo.
Not much more can be said after all the other excellent reviews, but one thing we did notice is that not many people walk around the complex, we think this is a big mistake (if your able to obviously), there is so much wildlife and birds to see that are missed if travelling on the carts.
The complex is huge, but we were so happy that we booked the Akumal section as it was a lot quieter than the other beach front hotel, Tulum.
If we every returned to Mexico, as there are so many places we still haven't been to, we would certainly return here and definitely recommend GBP Akumal to anyone thinking of staying there.

Room Tip: Try to stay in block 65, 66 or 67 as they all have beach/sea views

This hotel is really part of a large group of Bahia Prinicpe hotels....all named after ruins. They are easily accessed with trains running every few minutes. Akumal is situated on the ocean and has a lovely waterfront, blue and clear. Snorkeling is good there and the beach is very walkable. They had a Saturday beach party where they cooked pialla on the beach, and had a DJ, zumba etc. This hotel has lovely rooms (ours was ocean front), great pools and superb evening shows. Better than our 3 cruise ship shows! The hotels share the shows so they rotate to each hotel on different nights. WiFi was free in the lobby for 1 hour each day only. Food was excellent, and many restaurants to choose from for 3 "special" dining nights. We used the "collectivo's" to travel to Tulum ruins ($3 US) and to Playa del Carmen (4$) that were much cheaper than the taxi's. Ask at the PR desk. The only downside was my free shuttle to the airport left at 5:35am and there was absolutely no food to eat before leaving, even though I was told there was a 24 hour snack bar....when I asked at the snack bar they said there was no food! (Prepare the night before, knowing this...is my suggestion.)

Room Tip: We stayed in room 4726, on the ocean...beautiful! (But 3 floors up with no elevator.)
