“Perfect Place for a Honeymoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

My wife and I travelled out to Mexico for our honeymoon and I must say we thoroughly enjoyed our two weeks out there. We had emailed the hotel a few weeks before travelling to ask what they could do to make our stay even more special and they upgraded us and arranged the honeymoon package for our arrival. The hotel was fantastic, and we loved the statue and fountain in the lobby. And also the free drink on arrival! All the staff were friendly throughout the complex and always said hello and made us feel welcome. It is quite a large complex but they do have regaular golf buggies going round, but it's also nice to walk it. The room was really big and very clean, and includes a fridge with a few complimentary fizzy drinks which are restocked every day. The cleaners made different figures almost every day out of the clean towels, which was always a nice treat to return to. We prebooked our a la carte's before travelling, and got 3 each week. We would definitely recommend Tequila, the Mexican restaurant in the Tulum lobby area, and Mikado, the Japanese restaurant by the Coba lobby. Try and book the show table for Mikado, because the show chef is phenomenal.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

We stayed at the Gran Bahia Akumal from April 10th - 24th for our honeymoon.

We booked through Thomsons / First Choice and flew from Manchester Airport. First Choice told us to take mexican peso's rather than american dollars stating ""customers due to travel to Mexico should be aware that under new legislation, US Dollars are no longer accepted as a form of payment in shops, bars and restaurants." This is in fact rubbish, especially in this resort as everything was priced in dollars. In fact the cost of all First Choice excursions was in dollars! I only took a small amount of dollars for tipping but if I went again, I would take only dollars.

The transfer to the hotel from the airport took 1hr 30mins, we no problems collecting luggage etc at Cancun airport and got through customs fairly quickly. On arrival at the hotel we were greeted with a cocktail and checked in very quickly. Our room 5311 was on the 2nd floor and close to the reception, pools and beach. We had asked for a mattress topper which was provided and the room was immaculate. Our room was cleaned every day (towel animal was different every day for 2 weeks) and the fridge was constantly stocked. We left a tip for the maid and fridge person every day.

The pools are beautiful and kept immaculately clean, but it is difficult to get a sun lounger after 10am, we always found loungers at the beach any time of day. We spent most of our time at the beach (Akumal resort) and it is beautiful. The red flag was out for the whole duration of our stay but we still spent a lot of time in the water snorkelling and saw loads of fish. There is also a pelican that was at the beach most of the time, he didn't seem at all bothered about the amount of people getting close for a picture. I've seen a lot of people on here moaning about how rocky the beach is...really? There are coral reefs all around so of course there are going to be pieces of rock and coral on the beach. It is still very much a sandy beach and a beautiful one at that. Water shoes are a good idea, but many days I didn't bother wearing them and was totally fine.

The buffet food is very good, loads of choice and remember there are also 3 buffets that you can choose from. We preferred Akumal for breakfast and Coba for dinner. Most lunchtimes we ate at the Akumal snack bar. Yes the buffets and snack bars can become repetitive into the 2nd week but I could still have had something different every single day. The omelettes at the Akumal breakfast buffet are cooked to order and delicious. We tried the Tulum buffet didn't think it was as good as the other 2.

We ate at 6 of the a la carte restaurants Don Pablo, Arlequin, Le Gourmet, Mikado, Gran Tortuga and Fructos De La Mer. The only one we didn't rate highly was Don Pablo. The other 5 were delicious, Arlequin being our favourite. We pre booked our choices 2 weeks before arrival and all our requests were fulfilled. Long trousers and shirts are required (men) for the 3 gourmet restaurants (Don Pablo, Arlequin and Le Gourmet). There didn't seem to be any dress code for the other restaurants.

We went on 3 excursions during our stay. Xel - Ha - great day out. Perfect if you love being in the water and snorkelling, we saw loads of fish and the food and drink was very good. Coco Bongo's - amazing night out, fantastic show, VIP tickets are definitely the way to go! Cenotes and Turtle Tour (booked through resort) - our favourite and least expensive tour - swimmming in cenotes followed by a trip to Akumal beach (outwith the resort) to swim with huge sea turtles in their natural environment. The most amazing experience ever, a must do!

The staff at the resort are incredible, we never passed anyone who didn't smile and say hola! You just have to look around the resort to see how incredibly hard they work, the grounds are immaculate, I didn't see 1 piece of rubbish the whole time we were there. The guys are constantly walking around the pool and beach areas collecting glasses. They were all extremely grateful for the tips we gave them which were very much deserved.

The wildlife at the resort is plentiful, we enjoyed many an evening sitting on our balconies watching the coaties play and race up and down the surrounding trees. There were iguana's all around the resort basking in the sun and sitting on rocks by the pool. This really added to the beauty of the resort.

The only thing that stops me giving this resort a 5 is the dolphin pool. It is so small, clearly far too small to house the dolphins they keep. We refused to go and see any of the "free shows" because of this. I avoided going anywhere the pool as it upset me so much. The resort need to do much better in this aspect. If they insist of having dolphins then the least they can do is provide an adequate standard of housing for them. This is such a shame as I couldn't fault any other part of the resort.

Dear Guest:

First of all thank you very much for staying in the Gran Bahia Principe Akumal Resort.

We Thank you so much for your comments, As a company orientated to customer satisfaction, it makes us feel proud to receive comments like the ones that you kindly posted

Regarding your comment about the Dolphinarium, We truly understand your observation and appreciate the opinion that all of our present and future customers may have about a dolfinarium in an hotel complex, some of them are against the dolphin captivity, others appreciate the new attraction being in hands of a professional organization, as an enterprise with experience in the building of a controlled habitat in specially created aquariums. But please, let me inform you that The operation consists in a state-of-the-art life support system that changes the water in the pools every two hours and the dolphins are supervised, trained and taken care of by Professional Biologists.

Thank you so much for sharing us your concerns because definetely will be good tool of improvement. We look forward to your return to Grand Bahia Principe Resort so please do not hesitate to contact us before your next arrival and we will give you the amenities for being repetitive guest.

Our best regards,

Just returned from a fantastic 10 trip to GBP Akumal. After a long flight with some vary rude flight attendants (but that's another story!) we were impressed from the moment we pulled in to the drive. We had upgraded to Golden and was whisked away to the separate check in. Once all booked in and had our first cocktail, we were whisked away to Villa 68 - (only a couple hundred yards but still took us in the buggy) where Carlos was waiting with our luggage. Our room was large, clean with a stocked fridge - much needed.

I had communicated with Vanessa by email prior to our trip and was very pleased that we had an ocean view, a mattress topper and all out A'la carte bookings - thank you so much - excellent service.

The resort is huge but the trains to get you around are fantastic - they stop for you all the time and take you back to your respective villas - just tell them the number.

Beach is great - plenty of sunbeds - there were people who reserved their beds by the pool and beach at 7am but we always went for breakfast first and then headed to where we wanted to go between 9 & 10 and never had any problems finding a bed with shade.

The buffet food is plentiful and tasty - you would be hard pressed not to be able to find something to eat. The pasta stations were great and the fresh cooked omelettes for breakfast was my husbands favorite! Tullam and Coba seemed to have bigger buffets with more variety. We tried 6 A la carte but our favorite was the Arlequin based in Akumal - best steak i have ever had. The Mexican was lovely as was the Blue crab in Pescador in Coba.

The entertainment was what you would expect with shows in all 3 resorts in the evening, pool games during the day and Zumba in the sea!! Plenty to keep you busy if that's what you want! Tullam bar in the evening has some good live music every night, which is where we spent most evenings after the show.

The staff never stop smiling and seem to be working all the time, from prepping rooms to cutting grass - the grounds are immaculate. Eva our 'maid' was great and we certainly had no complaints. She surprised us with lovely towel art every day.

The resort was busy but never seemed noisy and we had a fantastic holiday - we are already looking to re-book for next year. Thanks to all the staff at the GBP for making our holiday one to remember.

Must also mention Kia the Thompson rep who along with James, went out of their way to help us when we had camera problems! Kia is a font of knowledge on the trips and the resort and is the most friendly and helpful rep I have met - nothing is too much trouble.

Room Tip: Golden villa 66 faces the ocean, and the Golden villas are nearer to the beach and 24 hr snack bar.

We just returned from a week at the resort from 4-16-2013 thru the 23rd...This was our 6th year in a row and it was great as usual. For years I swor I would never travel to mexico for vacation. We have gone the Hawaii, Virgin Islands and on and on but after my brother stayed there I had to give it a try.
My wife and I went and love it...The staff is great, the grounds and beach are spotless. We have snorkeled and seen turtles, dozens of differnt types of fish . Saw Sting rays and 5 feet long Baracuda and little occtopus...all in beautiful clean water.
We travel by cab from the resort to the Tulum ruins and nearby beach and have had great service. Great Zip lines in the area....And we are in our 55+ and we loved it.
I have sent my son and his wife there for their honeymoon and they loved it. The views of the ocean and the jungle are great. I love that the staff take care of you because they want to and are friendly because thats just the way they are not the way they are suppose to act.
If you are debating about trying mexico , try here and go after easter break. Its qiote anyway but even better after or before spring break.
I love the place and the area and will go back again next year over the Virgin Islands any day of the week. Ask for the Club Golden area as its closer to the beach and the view and short walk to breakfast or dinner are well worth it.

Room Tip: Ask for club Golden area.....nice views of ocean and jungle and walking distance to restaurants...Yo...

My lovely girlfriend and I just got back from the at GBP Akumal and we very much enjoyed it. I'll review it by categories.

Flight: We had a 4.5 hr flight from Canada and arrived mid morning. The time zone is EST minus one hour. Getting through the Cancun airport was fairly fast. Make sure you're wearing summer stuff though, as it's hot, even in the airport. It'll be hard to avoid some dude carrying your bags to your bus, not unless you want to have a tug of war, as they literally take your luggage out of your hands. Whatever... just give them a couple of bucks. I am betting they have way less money than you do.

Bus trip to resort: This takes about 90 minutes. It's just a straight north-south highway. The guy on the bus was selling cold Coronas for three dollars. Have a drink and enjoy the air conditioning.

Arrival: We arrived late morning and the room was not ready yet. They say 3 pm but we kept asking and ours was ready a bit after 2 pm. We left our luggage at the lobby entrance and went and had a buffet lunch, booked our 3 a la cartes, and walked around a bit and started to get our bearings while waiting.

Room: We were in buiding 54, on the ground floor. The room was cool, clean, and big. The king bed was average, but ok. Our view was of a nice palm tree, a well-kept lawn, and some jungle. The balcony gives you a nice sense of privacy, as you cannot see any other balconies or buildings. I liked the room a lot. It was pretty quiet, other than a baby SCREECHING in a nearby room on our first day. This alarmed us, but the little dude or lady either chilled out or took off, as it was quiet for the rest of the week. The washroom was clean and functional. The shower has a handheld thing that you use, not unless you want water blasting straight at your face. I got used to it. The room was close to both the lobby, the 24 hour bar/snack bar, and the beach (all were only about a 2-3 min walk) so it was a great location. The room had a mini bar that had some soft drinks, but no alcohol, but I put a request note in it with a few dollars so the fridge had beer in it (Dos Equis) for the rest of the week.

Food: The buffets were very good. We tried all three (Akumal, Coba, and Tulum). The Tulum one seeemed to perhaps be the best, but all had very good food. Tons of selection and almost everything I had, I liked. We went to the Italian, Japanese, and Mediterranean a la cartes, and all were nice experiences.

The resort: It's a gorgeous place. It's HUGE and we only saw a little bit of it, overall. But you can take the little extended golf carts anywhere, and you never have to wait very long. It's like a little city, and you take transportation wherever you want to go. The "super bus" to the Hacienda (where you can find a shopping mall, a plaza, some bars, and the disco which does not open until midnight) was an old converted truck that had some exhaust problems. Sit in the second section, not unless you're into getting high from gas sniffing. Walking around the resort paths is very nice, as the lanscaping is impeccable, and the trees and flowers are gorgeous. The paths are well lit at night. The place smells so nice as well.

The beach: The beach in front of Akumal is the least crowded, but it's also the narrowest and rockiest part of the beach. But it's still beautiful. At the far end (south end) there is a rock barrier with some pretty good snorkeling. If you continue off resort, you can walk to a nice bay around the corner. It's about a 20 min walk. I saw some garbage along the path which was kind of a bummer. Back at the resort, the middle part of the beach is quite wide with nice soft sand, and decent snorkeling there as well. A rope restricts how far you can swim out. But this is to protect the coral. You can snorkel at the edge of the coral and see some awesome fish. I was told that the Tulum beach is the best, but I never ventured all the way down there. It's a long beach.

Service: We had awesome service all week. The resort staff was friendly and helpful.

Pools: The pools are huge, and they wander all over the place. I'm not usually a pool guy so much, but I enjoyed them during my stay. They were clean and very nice.

Off resort: We did a couple of organized tours: one to Delphinus and my girlfriend loved it. They do a good job there, and the dolphins seem to be well taken care of. We also went snorkeling in Puerto Moralos, which was also excellent. The bus ride back took way longer than it should have though, and we got back two hours late. This made us slightly cranky for a bit. But we got over it fast, ha. We took the Collectivo (3 dollars per person) to Playa Del Carmen one night for some shopping. We also took it to Tulum on our last day. The Collectivo is fast, cheap, and safe. You have to wait by the highway out by the Hacienda to get it.

Weather: It was hot and humid all week. The sun was out almost all week, with just a little bit of cloud and maybe one hour of rain.

Price: I got this week-long trip for around $1000 per person total price. This was an amazing price for the quality of the trip. I have paid double that for similar quality places. I was completely happy with what I received for the price we paid!

Overall: A completely positive experience. I find it sad when I read some of the negative reviews on this site. If you can't be happy here, I think maybe you cannot be happy anywhere! Thanks GBH Akumal!

What can I say other than "amazing!" This was a return visit for my Husband and I who got married here 4 years ago. This time we were returning with a new addition to the family - our not quite 2 year old daughter :-) We wanted to show her the place that Mummy and Daddy got married :-)
The staff are so friendly and welcoming. Nothing seems to be a problem to them, they will do anything for you.
The food quality and choice was excellent. So many things to try. We were slightly worried what our daughter would make of the varied food choices prior to going but she absolutely loved everything!
The hotel and resort itself was very clean. The staff take so much pride in the cleanliness and appearance of every aspect of this fantastic resort.
We went to relax and relax is what we did. We didn't feel the need to leave the resort at all during our 2 week stay. This was our 4th visit to Mexico and have done a lot of exploring during previous visits. We spent our days visiting the beach in a morning and pool in the afternoon. having a delicious lunch inbetween.
We visited just 2 of the gourmet restaurants during our stay as we were more than happy to have a casual evening meal in the buffet restaurant. We really enjoyed eating in both the mediterrano and mikado restaurants. The restaurants were very child friendly and made our daughter feel very special and welcomed which made us feel very happy and relaxed.
We are now saving up for a return visit in perhaps 2 years time.
We recommend to all our family and friends and all who read this review - Go to Mexico! Go stay at the Gran Bahia Principe!
Thank you for making our holiday amazing!!!! :-)
