“Perfect honeymoon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

Our first trip to Mexico for our honeymoon and we stayed in the Akumal resort of the GBP 1st – 16th October. Thanks to an email the week before and Vanessa at the Hotel, we were upgraded for free to a ‘golden junior suite’ – villa 71. Check in at the hotel was very efficient and the welcome cocktail was much appreciated!

We were very happy with our room; spacious, clean with a huge bed and good view from the balcony – forest on one side and you could see the ocean through the trees. Our housekeeper (Deja if the management read this!) did a really good job and surprised us every day with different examples of towel art. I think returning to the room every day to find it spotless and refreshed is worth a daily tip – we left around 20 pesos a day – same for waiters etc that look after you.

It is a very large resort but lovely to walk around and explore. We hardly used the golf buggies at all as we enjoyed strolling around and walking off the food and drink. The buffet restaurant at Akumal was great and even as vegetarians we found enough to enjoy. There are different sections e.g. Chinese / sushi / Mexican / kids / Italian and chefs cooking fresh pizza and pasta etc, brilliant. We didn’t visit the a la cartes due to a lack of vegetarian options so perhaps this could be improved upon. A previous reviewer made a good point that serving staff dedicated to serving and refreshing drinks would be a good idea.

The beach near Akumal is lovely, though I would recommend taking some shoes to wear e.g. when going snorkelling. There are some beautiful fish to see and the staff painstakingly collect seaweed in the mornings that has been swept ashore. Similar with general maintenance of the resort grounds – everything is kept neat and tidy, which is admirable in a place this size.

October is certainly not the main season for Mexico; however the pool sunbeds were always all reserved by 9am and the buffet restaurant etc were starting to get much busier towards the end of our stay. The sunbed issue shouldn’t be a worry though as there are always plenty on the beach – a mere few strides from the pool areas.

Trips
We took a taxi to Akumal (‘turtle’) beach which is idyllic and a must-see. We were encouraged to either pay to be part of a snorkelling group or hire snorkelling equipment and a life jacket. We had our own snorkels so did our own thing. Without paying for the ‘compulsory’ life jacket you are discouraged from exploring certain areas of the sea so we stayed out of the way but were still lucky enough to see a couple of turtles – stunning.

We also booked a Tulum trip and underwater world experience with Thomson. Both were very good – Tulum is very interesting and the second part of the trip was one of our holiday highlights – a few hours at a private beach club with (much needed after a morning sight seeing in the heat) ice cold drinks, salsa, nachos and an idyllic setting of white sand beach and the greenest sea you’ll ever witness. If we visit again I would definitely try to reach the nearby Tulum beach by ourselves; just gorgeous.

The underwater world was also excellent – snorkelling in a refreshing underground cenote in the rainforest first (make sure to use insect repellent – we were feasted upon on arrival) then to Akumal beach to swim with sea turtles and sting rays. Another highlight of our trip!

We enjoyed lovely weather; humid of course but hot and sunny. Only 2 days of the 14 were a little overcast. Any storms came over quickly (and you know they are coming from the sudden winds and amazing cloud formations) but soon pass over. Didn’t struggle too much with mozzies which surprised us but we did use jungle formula repellent.

We love to see the wildlife – coatis, iguanas, beautiful birds, the guinea pig-type animals, but you are encouraged not to feed them - an instruction many of the tourists fail to remember.

All in all it was just what we were after and we’re hoping to return at some point to the Riviera Maya – the longer transfer time is well worth it in our view.

First of all do not trust the bad reviews as we can say hand on heart, it was the best holiday we have ever been on.

We went in October for two weeks and enjoyed ourselves that much, we are saving up to go again next year and bring the family too!

We stayed in the Akumal hotel but we used the other two hotels too. Stunning scenery! We were Always in the pools and the sea in particular as I found an addiction to snorkelling. The fish was just amazing to swim with.

The best part of the holiday was swimming with the turtles. We took a taxi, already had snorkels and got to swim with them for free. We only rented life jackets out.

The resort it self there is so much to do. There are also organised trips by the reps, too many to choose from so We just have to go again.

I would recommend chichen Itza and Coco bongos for a night out!

There is so much to write about, I don't want to bore you but just know this, the weather was nice, staff were friendly, maid service was impeccable, cute towels every day! The facilities were the best ive ever visited. The food in the buffets was spectacular. Different choices, a la cartes were even better! Definitely recommend mikado!

I really cant wait to go back. Also we did not have trouble with reserving beds by the pools. We usually found one after breakfast. I did notice a lot were taken though by this point.

So to wrap this review up I WOULD RECOMMEND EVERYONE TO VISIT HERE :D Best decison you will ever make. Cannot fault anything :)

Firstly, we booked a family room which on arrival we had not been allocated. We arrived on a Friday and did not get moved to a family room until the Tuesday. Whilst waiting for us to be allocated a family room we had to sit around with our suitcases for 5 hours. Also, whilst we were in the process of being moved my wife's hair straightners were stolen from our room. We had to spend a whole day down at the Police Station with a translator just to get a claims form in order to claim on travel insurance, we also had to pay for the claims form which is a joke!!! We paid extra money to have all inclusive 24 hours a day, which was not the case. The staff were very rude & arrogant throughout the whole two weeks we were there. It cost me £4,500 to take myself, my wife and my 11 year old daughter on this holiday, which we paid for using inheretance money I had received and I have to say that we had a better time at the wake than we did on this holiday. This hotel states that it has a 5* rating but my family and I would only give it 1*.

We just returned from a fabulous vacation at the Gran Bahia Principe Akumal!

We stayed in the Club Golden section in Villa 65 for 1 week. Hotel is approximately 1.5 hrs from the airport. Upon arrival our luggage was tagged and taken by the bellhops while we were shuttled to the private Club Golden Reception for check-in. The margarita I had while completing our check-in paperwork was yummy and just what we needed after a long travel day. We had emailed ahead as recommend by many others on TripAdvisor and received all of our requests. We had a ground floor room with an extra bed for our 3 year old and mattress topper on our own king sized bed. The small couch in the pictures on the official hotel website is actually made into a twin bed - perfect for us! Air conditioning worked well and our mini-bar was stocked with a few beers, soft drinks and chips. (We noticed that the mini-bar is stocked by staff separate than the maids - a small tip inside the fridge got us a few extra beers and chocolate bars.) Our luggage arrived approximately 10 minutes after we got to our room. We could hear the ocean that first night (we arrived after dark) and was amazed to see our view the next morning - we were in one of the closest buildings to the beach with a fabulous view of the sunrise over the water.

The hotel property is quite big, consisting of 4 hotels, golf courses and residences. They had a shuttle system that took you to the various areas. Our son loved the "train" and would ride it all day if we let him. The drivers were always friendly and made extra effort to help you navigate the system and get where you wanted to go. We never waited long for a shuttle. A couple of times while waiting at the lobby (having just missed the leaving shuttle) a staff member grabbed a golf cart and took us where we wanted to go. The Akumal resort isn't too big to walk around, but getting to the other resorts was a distance.

We made our a la carte reservations via email ahead of time and again, got exactly what we wanted. We also ate at the main buffets of each hotel. Overall we liked the Akumal one best, it was smaller, not as busy and had a great selection. We never had a problem finding something we wanted to eat. The kids section at the Akumal buffet was smaller and not at child height, but not an issue for us. Both the Tullum and Coba buffets were bigger, busier and had a larger children's section. We got to know our breakfast server, Artemio, who was awesome! The a la carte's that we enjoyed were: Arlequin (Gourmet), La Gran Tortuga (Brazililan), Tequila (Mexican) and Mikado (Japenese) - all were fabulous! Each restaurant had the same kids menu with a variety of selections.

We spent the entire week at the resort instead of venturing out on any excursions, our 3 year old still naps and didn't want to be working around his schedule for planning. We spent our days by the various pools and beach and going to the kids mini-disco in the evening. The 2 Akumal pools were perfect for our son who isn't a swimmer yet. They each had a kids section, but also shallow areas around the majority of the pool where he could still splash around and have fun. The beach areas were nice but rocky in the water. We saw this on other reviews and brought water shoes for our son, so was not an issue at all. Both pools and the beach had lots of beach chairs and palapas for shade. People do reserve these despite signs asking you not too. We were up early with our little one and never had an issue getting seats after we had breakfast. Few times we switched locations and were still able to find great seats in the afternoon.

We also stopped in at the Dolphinarium while at the Tullum resort one day. Amazing that this is open for guests to watch without having to pay. People who were in the water seemed to be having a lot of fun. Some rooms at Tullum even have a view of the dolphins all the time.

Unfortunately we weren't able to attend any of the shows in the evening past the mini-disco. Our son loved to watch the mini-disco, but only got on stage the last night there for the pinata. The staff at the mini-disco were great with the kids and lots of fun. We stayed to see the Michael Jackson show, but it was too loud for our little guy and we had to leave - the start did seem pretty good though. We ventured out to the Hacienda Dona Isabel during the day for a little shopping which was nice. No pressure to buy, bartering or people fighting over our business, a nice experience. Again, we didn't head out to the Hacienda for the night life but it looked like a lot of fun. One thing we really liked was that the resort was quiet at night, all the late night partying was in one area away from the rooms and allowed our son to sleep uninterrupted.

Overall we had an amazing trip and would definitely recommend the Gran Bahia Principe Akumal to everyone! We have stayed at a Bahia in Dominican in the past and will be looking at this chain for another destination in the future.

Room Tip: Email ahead with any requests. Ask for a mattress topper. Villa 65 and 66 are closest to the beach w...

We have just returned from a weeks stay at this most amazing resort. We have absolutely no complaints and would recommend it to anyone thinking of traveling to the Mayan Riviera. The resort is one of the cleanest that I have stayed at and the staff is super helpful. One of our group is dealing with a knee injury and the resort took such great care of us. There was always a trolley that was willing to take us to wherever we needed to go even if it wasn't where they were actually headed. We were there from November 2nd-9th, 2012 and will definitely return for another stay at this resort. The food was great and if you are looking for the best of the buffets I would suggest the one at Coba as it had the most variety. Also if you go to Mikado (the Japanese restaurant) be sure to ask for the show. It is amazing and we wish we had known to do this. We stayed in the Royal Golden section which was right by the beach and it didn't cost us much extra and was well worth the price. The whole resort is kept in impeccable condition and the grounds are beautiful. You feel like you are in your own little paradise while you are there. It is located close to many off site excursions as well and we enjoyed them as well. Most amazing cenotes and ruins that take your breath away with very friendly and knowledgeable guides. Don't miss a trip to Rio Secreto and if you don't mind a long van ride we really enjoyed the Captain Hook dinner trip. Lots of fun and great lobster. If you are looking to travel to this area, this is the place to stay.

This is a beautiful and relaxing resort. A must to try. It is huge and may not be for everyone. We have been to Leventado (Bacardi Island) so much smaller, but pretty much no entertainment. As well, we have gone to GB Ambar, Punta Cana. It was great too - but again large. So whatever you prefer, they aim to please.

The food is good, the a la carte's even better. Arlequin and the Don Pablo were the best in our opinion. If you stay in the Royal Golden Section, you can make your reservations ahead of time. Just email them with you preferences.

The beach is really nice, a bit rocky at the Akumal end but further towards Coba and Tulum, it was great but so much busier there. Akumal is a quieter section, so its easier to just walk the beach and pick a spot.

Lots of beach chairs, always a problem at the pool getting a lounge chair unless you put a towel on it at 7:00 a.m. We only did that once and we chose not to play that game so the beach was our choice. Looking over the ocean is much more beautiful and quieter too.

The Royal Golden rooms are nice, closest to the beach and restaurants. We were in Villa 56 - it was close to the beach, pool, snack bar and we had ocean view from a distance. A five minute walk to the buffet and main reception area.

If you like nature, there were a few capybaras, endless groups of coatimundi running around the grounds. So cute. Also, lots and lots of iguanas, birds etc. We love animals but chose not to feed the coatimundi's as requested by the resort.

The grounds are amazing, clean, endless walking if you choose or take the trams. They will drop you at Coba or Tulum if you want to go there. Or just grab the trams in your own section to go to the Reception and buffet restaurant, and also they will drop you at your villa if you want that.

The entertainment was good most nights, we didn't always attend. If you felt like just grabbing a couple of drinks the very nice bar/lounge area beside the theatre had a couple of singers most nights. That was a nice place to stop by as well.

The only strange things I noticed were paying for a safe and returning towels to reception at the end of our stay. Any five star resorts we have visited have never expected this. That is just an observation more than a criticism. Always room for improvement.

Hi to Eric, JoeTexas and Clara in the Preferred Club - we enjoyed your help, enthusiasm and always being just great. And also to Ana, in the Akumal buffet. I was unable to see her again the last day to say goodbye to her. So many friendly and nice people working there and they actually seemed to enjoy their jobs.

Love this resort. If you choose to visit, you will no doubt love it, we did. And we will be back - that says alot since we do not usually repeat resorts.

Gran Bahia Principe Akumal Mayan Riviera, Mexico.
It is an amazingly beautiful area to visit.

We spent a week in this resort which with minimal cost and great dedication could become what they claim they are, a 5 star resort.
We met there very hard working employees nice people.

Without going into any details, in our opinion it is far from being a five star resort.

Before writing this comment, I contacted the Management, Grupo Pinero, since for very personal reasons I didn’t want to make my review public.
It was a surprise gift from our children on our 40th year wedding anniversary and my 60th birthday, planned with great effort and love.
I apologize for sharing personal information.

The e-mails exchanged between the Quality department of the Gran Bahia and we are documented, as I am fluent in Spanish, they can be translated into English for anyone to see.

The resort is poorly understaffed, hence service suffers a toll, everyday service is poor, it isn’t the employees’ fault, it’s physically impossible.

Because of some issues we had, we expressed complaints to the Public Relations representative of the hotel, on our first day; we were heard and accommodated as best as she could, we’re grateful for that.
Not grateful for receiving unnecessary special treatment that other guests in the same “bracelet” category didn‘t get.

We witnessed and talked with other guests, including people who travelled with us, same special bracelet, we can safely infer that, if we wouldn’t have made the complaints we wouldn’t have gotten any extra-unsolicited service.

Upon our return home to Vancouver, I sent my first private fully detailed e-mail to the head offices in Spain.
I didn’t receive an acknowledgment of receipt for 6 days and not until I strongly requested it in a follow up mail.
The Quality Department answered then.

Déjà vu.
Mexico all over again.
No complaint = no action, Complaint = reaction.

I replied to that message wondering and so stated: Would I have gotten an answer, if instead of sending them a detailed serious PRIVATE e-mail I would’ve sent a comment as I’m doing now to a worldwide social network?
Yes, in my opinion, swift damage control.

Their replies were generalized, apologizing for not having met our expectations etc.
What expectations? Our complaints were far from neither trivial nor generalized, service, cleanliness among others merited a more straightforward reply.
We offered to send photographs as proof of what we were claiming, the department didn’t comment about the pictures nor requested to see them.

The last reply we received is almost a copy of the ones sent by management to the general reviews of Trip Advisor, non-committed damage control.
That is what prompted me to write this now, breaking so to speak my privacy.
Nevertheless, I will not demean the fact that the Department takes the time to answer, not too many companies bother to do so.

Kudos where kudos are due.

I thank you all for listening and for sharing your valuable thoughts and experiences!
