Sorry this review is so late.
This was our sixth stay at the Gran Bahia Principe, the fifth time in the Akumal section. This time was by far the best. The customer service was wonderful this time around. The Guest Service Manager, Ivan Ortiz, treated us so well as returning guests....and of course we will be returning again in April, for our seventh stay. We usually stay for a week, but have decided our next time will be for 10 days. A week just isn't enough!
To anyone contemplating staying in any of the three sections of the Gran Bahia Principe Riviera Maya - you really can't go wrong with any of the three. We prefer the Akumal section, but they are all good, each one with it's pros and cons.
We stayed in Villa 48 on the third floor. Our room had a king bed, and a small trundle bed was brought in for our 6yo son. Everything in the room worked wonderfully. We arrived at approximately 2pm. We checked in at the VIP desk. Ivan showed us to our room, which was ready and waiting. Many of the staff here have remained the same over the years we've been coming here, and we believe that says a lot about the resort. The staff is almost always willing to go above and beyond to make the guests happy. Very rarely do you find a staff member without a smile on their face. We tip for good service at the Bahia, and we find ourselves tipping frequently, because we receive great service.
We enjoy the food at the buffet, and we never use all of the a la carte restaurant reservations that are allocated to us. The buffet selection is large, and the food is very fresh unless you wait until close to shut-down time. We tend to go early in each meal-time, so things are very fresh and all the platters and trays are full... We also like to check out different buffets at different times, and have been known to eat at two different buffets during the same evening meal.... Why not? It's all-inclusive....
We enjoy spending time at the beach at the Bahia. There is a very, very long stretch of beach here. It's not a pure, fine sand beach, but rather a natural coral beach. This makes it good for snorkeling. You'll find some larger pieces of coral rock on the beach and in the water. Parts of the shoreline are rocky, and great for tide-pool exploration. The end of the beach closer to the Tulum Club Diamond has more wave action; the end of the beach closer to the Akumal piers is very shallow and has almost no wave action. Something for everyone! We don't find a need for watershoes when we're just walking on the beach; we seldom wear them in the water but we do use them when we walk on the rocky shore.
The management at the Bahia recognized that there was a large group of TripAdvisor people coming in when we were this last time, and several of us were "repeaters"; a couple of us had been there many times and were good friends of the staff. We were treated to a beach party and a wonderful a la carte dinner hosted by the staff. This was a wonderful touch, and won't soon be forgotten. We made many close friends because of these efforts on behalf of the Bahia staff, and hope to see them all again very soon! Thanks again to Sara and Ivan. We can't wait to be back, April can't come soon enough!
