We went for two weeks in June 2011. Although the transfer is long, almost 2 hours, it is well worth it when you get there. The staff are friendly, complex very clean. Our group consisted of 7 people including 3 children and all were catered for. The food was plentiful and some much variety even for me, as I am particularly fussy when abroad. I would definitely return to this hotel and would have no hesitation to recommend to others.

After reading many of the reviews on Tripadvisor for this resort we decided to give it a try. We received the best pricing on this property of all the resorts we looked at in the caribbean so that also helped the decision.
We were looking for direct flights to minimise our travel time. We flew Transat and squeezed into the narrow seats. This was our 2nd trip on Transat and if I can find other options for direct flights out of Edmonton for a reasonable fair we will be taking them next time.
Upon arriving at Cancun there was a computer problem at customs so all passengers had to wait for an hour until they started to manually approve entry. The time share sales men are out in full force as you make your way to your bus. The wait on the bus was about another 45 minutes until we were on our way. We knew that the resort was far from the Cancun airport so we did expect it to take some time to get there. It took about 2 hours as we were the last stop. Our flight left Edmonton at 8am and we arrived in our room at 6:30pm.

The check in at the resort was quick and we were very happy to find we had the best location, villa 47. The room was clean for our entire stay. You could hear the ice machine though the night as it was outside our door on the main floor but that was not a big deal for us. The 2nd or 3rd floor would provide a better ocean view. The bed was very firm but we slept well each night.
They do promote the time share or priority club but it was nice they did not push it on us and we were able to steer clear of the sales pitches.
We made our A La Carte reservations at Arlequin, Le Gourmet, and Mikado. The food was good but not great and the portions were possibly a bit small. You can always eat more back at the buffet or snack bar if you need to.
The buffet was better than we expected. There were many items to choose from. It was adequate for our needs so no complaints.
The pools were nice with lots of room. You did not feel crowded. Getting a chair on the pool deck was a bit of a challenge later in the day.
The days go by quickly and the pool bars close at 5. It gets dark quickly after that.
We met a few other couples and it was nice to visit a bit. There were many Canadians there.
The evening shows were a bit loud for us so we enjoyed walking around and sending a few emails, Facebook etc. at the lobby using the iPad on the free internet connection there (it is slow).
The grounds are very nice and the resort is huge. You can get your exercise walking or take the transportation from the front lobby.
The beach was nice but not as good as we found it in the Dominican. It was a bit steep so walking on it is harder for long distances. The sand is not as nice but still is good.
The weather could have been a bit better as it rained out a lot of weddings on the Saturday and was fairly windy most days. Thankfully there are a lot of places to hang out and things to do out of the wind.

We took one excursion to the Coba ruins. It was good although the price is a bit high at $110 CDN per person. My wife was happy the guide did not make it a booze cruise with vulgar humour. We also would recommend the Colectivo (public transportation van for $30 pesos) rather than a taxi. It was pretty fast and had more room for a fraction of the cost of a taxi. We took it to Playa del Carmen and to Tulum. We traveled during the daylight and felt safe always.

The return trip to the airport took 2 hours. We had to be at the lobby 5 hours before the flight time so that meant leaving at 7am and missing breakfast.

To summarize we had a great trip and the resort was very good with friendly helpful staff. As expected the travel time to and from the resort was the biggest downfall. Our beach room location was awsome. There are so many places in the world to visit so we will probably pick a different location for our next trip.

Room Tip: As mentioned in several postings villa 47 is the best location at Akumal since it it closest to the...

I will start off by saying, when you get approached by the privledge club, WALK AWAY!!!!! Better yet....RUN! We were actually dissappointed that the resort would put these scoundrels in a place that they were in your face constantly. They say no pressure sales tactics.....WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! At one point in our 4.5 hr consultation (was only supposed to be 90 minutes) they were indirectly calling us stupid for not signing over 58000.00, which went down to 5000.00 at the end, after showing our displeasure of the cost sveral times...with that being said, that was the only downside to our vacation.

Onward and upward....we were so impressed with this resort. We upgraded to golden when we booked our trip, and we were so glad we did. We booked private transportation through Lomas Travel, which got us to our resort about an hour and a half before the bus. Private check-in was extremely quick, then off to our room. At first when we entered the room we were overcome with the smell of what we thought was mold/mildew, but quickly realized it was the ocean/jungle smell, something we got used to just in about 2 minutes. The rooms were very clean, the staff were wonderful and very friendly. The buffets were great....ala cartes were wonderful! Did some shopping at the Hacienda, but then discovered that the shops in Coba were more reasonable. Its the little things you discover that will make your next trip even better. We did 3 excursions, the Delphinus ( the most amazing experience if you are a dolphin lover), Rio Secreto...OMG FANTASTIC!!!! Paulina was the best guide and we were with an amazing family with the most well behaved 3 kids we have ever met! Hiking & swimming through these magnificent cenotes was magical and awe-inspiring. Highly recommend it....and if you are a plus size person....these excursions are made for everyone!!!!! That was my biggest fear is that I wouldn't be able to get a life jacket big enough...lol...but I was sooooo wrong! Our last excursion was a private tour to the Tulum Ruins and the Coba Ruins. Incredible. Maybe a little too much in one day, but again...will know that for our next trip. All in all, for our very first southern vacation....PRICELESS!!! Can't waot to go back again & again & again....Just a few tips....If you get your luggage weighed at the resort for your flight home (highly recommended or you pay $15 per kilo that you are over)....when we weighed our luggage we were under our 22 kilo's each...when we got to the airport, magically we were over by 4 kilos....so obviously the airport is trying to make a crooked buck...so beware. Also, requesting a third floor, ocean view room in 65, 66 or 67 is the way to go....you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: 3 floor, ocean view, villa's 65, 66 and 67 are the best.

Gran Bahai Principe is one of the most gorgeous resorts I have seen with beautiful natural landscaping and wildlife. My boyfriend and I did a four day, three night trip and I did not want to leave. Gran Bahai Akumal is one of the premier options of the Gran Bahai resort with the option of choosing the Junior Club Golden Suite. Choose the upgrade, it is definitely worth the few extra bucks. Transportation is provided within the resort to take you to each of the hotels, restaurants, rooms, etc. As part of an all-inclusive, you have the choice of full buffets at each hotel that provide an ample selection of international cuisine that should allow everyone to find something they eat. Upgrading to the Club Golden gets you four a la carte dinners at any restaurant on the complex. Mikado (the Japanese Restaurant) was great and includes a hibachi show. Make sure you book your reservations as soon as you arrive as the restaurants tend to fill up quickly which would prevent you from taking advantage of the a la carte dinners. Club Golden also gets you a premium top shelf bar in the private reception area with great bartenders nearly 24hrs a day. Right around the corner is a 24 hr bar and snack bar; the options for food and drinks are endless. Also, there are more activities than we even had time for-the resort provides daily entertainment at every pool and on the beach, and indoor activities at the main lobbies. These activities include water polo, ping-pong, salsa dancing, volleyball, cooking classes and much more. Additionally, the water recreation center is a little hard to find, but once located they have snorkeling, kayaking, windsurfing (provided you have had a lesson), etc. all for free with virtually no wait the entire time we were there. There are Spas at each of the hotels and the one at Akumal was extremely peaceful and relaxing. The staff was great and we had the entire place to ourselves. If you want to take advantage of visiting historical ruins or zip lining through the jungle, they are only 10 mins away and there are a number of companies to do tours with. Overall, we could not have ask for better service, the staff were always willing to get whatever you ask for in a very timely manner. Great resort, I can’t wait to go back!

Room Tip: Go with the upgrade to Club Golden, very quiet area of suites that is exclusive for those who chose...

I was at his hotel a few weeks ago for 4 days and let me tell you, it was amazing. We were in the club golden section of the hotel and it was immaculate. Every day the room was spectacular with towels folded into animal shapes by our great maintenance staff. The rest of the staff was amazing as well, they always tried to help you as well as they could. Most of the staff spoke fluent (or fluent enough) English to make sure that your desires were met. The waiters at the restaurants were especially well spoken. But be sure when you arrive at the hotel that you make reservations to the restaurants you want to go to for the entire week. It is much easier this way. I can't say enough about the staff and how hard-working they were. I have never seen employees work as hard as the ones in this resort. Every day after the close there were special maintenance men to work around and paint the areas that had lost some color or that had paint chipped off.

One last thing, if you find a good bartender (or two) stick with them throughout your stay. The higher level bartenders will stick out after a day of trying the different bars within the confines of the hotel.

P.S. Try the Mayan Monkey drink if you have never had the pleasure to do so.

Room Tip: Go club golden and you will get free high speed internet.

Just got back yesterday from a week at the GBP Akumal. Prior to this trip I had never stayed at an all inclusive and didn't think I would enjoy it as much as renting a condo, I was wrong! Two biggest complaints - its far from the airport but you can't fault the resort for this just expect a bus ride! Second would be there is a lot of rude people, not staff it's hotel guests who have ridiculous expectations and attitudes. Now to discuss the great- We tried 3 ala cartes (Brazilian, le gourmet and fruites del mer) all had great food. We chose not to use our final a la carte as we enjoyed the buffet much. Almost too much selection, do a lap before you start taking food! We went to the Coba buffet as well, it was also good but pretty much the same food as Akumal. - the rooms were very nice. Didn't try the jacuzzi tub but others did and they enjoyed it. Check where your shower head is pointed before you turn it on! The beds are very very hard, however never did I feel sore when I woke up or have any trouble sleeping. We tried to make sure we tipped the cleaning lady (thank you Julia) and the guy who restocked the fridge every day. If we forgot it didn't make a difference everything was well done we left a note in our fridge requesting only diet soda and that's what we got all week. - The grounds are very well maintained, and you can see a lot of animals! Tequila boom booms are still as powerful as just tequila so watch out. The bartenders are for the most part great, you'll just learn which ones pour heavy or light. The tram drivers are the greatest and will save your feet after a long day or help you make your a la carte in time. I'm sure there's more I could add but just know its a great place. Just remember you're in a foreign country expect that they may not speak English very well ( this really bothers me as I've never met a Spanish speaking person in Canada demanding perfect Spanish!) Also keep in mind that you're on holidays make the choice to enjoy yourself and don't sweat the small stuff!
