Gynn'Ak is simply my favorite place to eat in the Riviera Maya! Newly discovered this past September on our second trip, we ended up eating there twice (and tried for a third time but missed her by >< this much...).
Like someone else said, if you blink, you'll miss it. If you take the road from the arches going towards Ya-Kul, Gynn'Ak will be about halfway, across the street from Half Moon Bay (Villa Flamingo is directly across the street from her, and any local can direct you to there). It's a simple tent at the edge of the jungle, alongside of her building that houses her kitchen. But what it lacks in fancy surroundings, it more than makes up for in an amazing culinary adventure. We first had the arrachera burgers, and honestly...I haven't bothered with having a burger since I got home, because anything else would be a let down after those. Thick, well seasoned arrachera on homemade rolls with all the fixings, cooked to perfection! My next visit, I had the Thai fish tacos. So freaking amazing! Hands down, the best fish tacos ever, and I have tried them all over the place. A great mix of flavours, and a total surprise (considering I'm not big on Thai food). And in case you have any hesitation...it's some of the cheapest food we found.
Gynna herself is a world class chef, and a great hostess also. Her grandfather founded Akumal, so she's the ultimate historian and insider. She can entertain you with stories, tell you anything you want to know about the region and give you any tips on where to go for your adventure.
So yeah, the place is outside. But trust me, it is so worth spraying on some biodegradable repellant, grabbing a fresh, homemade jamica tea, and having a great time and meal! We're actually planning on staying part of our next vacation in Akumal, just so we can keep trying things on her amazing menu. Her hours are around 12-7, (12-4 in the low season) and she's closed on Thursday.
Go in and give it a try, before she hits the big time and moves to some fancy digs and you have to reserve a table 6 weeks out. Then you can say..."Yeah, I'm one of the original customers from back in the day.." :-)
