We visited Yalku the day after Christmas. It was really an amazing place - the water is beautiful and teeming with fish.

Our daughters, who are 4 & 6, went with us and had an fairly good time. I would really recommend NOT taking little ones who haven't snorkeled before as even with the stairs leading into the water it really is tough getting them in and out of the the lagoon with gear on.

But this place really is not to be missed. We took a taxi out of Playa and even the driver didn't know where this place was actually located, but it was really easy to find.

FYI - apparently the snorkel gear is supposed to be included in the admission to the lagoon, which was about $7/each. However, they charged us extra for everything, including lifejackets for the kids. We easily ended up paying $20/person, so be aware that it's supposed to be included in the entrance fee.

Have fun! It's truly a beautiful spot for relaxation.

If you don't like the idea of snorkeling in the open ocean or if you just want a different snorkeling experience, this is a great place to go. There are many fish to see in the lagoon. This would be a great place to take kids snorkeling. The rental equipment was in excellent, clean condition.

I went to Yalku and Xcaret on my vacation in June. On Monday I went to Yalku and was blown away by how amazing this place was. There were hardly any people there, and the snorkeling was amazing. So many differnet types of fish and so many of them. The surrounds are great and the price is cheap.

I was expecting the same type of snorkeling at Xcaret and it wasn't even close, I'd say Xcaret snorkeling is 1/10 of how good Yalku is.

Xcaret is worth going to , its an amazing place, but Yalku is a must.

If you are a fan of snorkeling, you have to visit Yalku Lagoon. Its located in the small town of Akumal, Mexico. Its a short drive south of Playa del Carmen down highway 307. Theres a small charge to get into the park I think it was $6.00 U.S. but this includes equipment, if you don't have your own. The lagoon is very clear and calm and there are a lot of fish. We saw a sea turtle, barracuda and an eel just to name a few. We stayed in Playa and the seas were rough enough each day that snorkeling was impossible so we headed here for the day. The waters are so calm, you don't have to have any real experience snorkeling to enjoy it. My only complaint would be the sculptures that are all around the park, even out in the water. Although the sculptures themselves are beautiful, they don't really seem to belong in this beautiful lagoon. It kind of takes away from it by making it seem so commercial. Wonder who's idea this was???

This place is absolutely amazing! There is no reef to speak of here, but there is an abundance of fish and the water is totally calm and turquise. My wife is afraid of water and she had an amazing time here with a life jacket and our own snorkel gear. The crowds are fairly small (33-40 max) and it is a great place to spend the day sunning and snorkeling. It is only $6 for the day per person and you can come and go as you please from 8-5. We stayed at Vista Del Mar condos and just went to and from to get food and Cervezas as needed : ) A must see if you like natural beauty and snorkeling.
