“Beautiful with lots of rocks and waves”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2014

While it is gorgeous, the thousands of tiny rocks and un-surfable large waves could be done without. Lots of activities with friendly staff and very accessible drinks!

“Sea turtles”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2014 via mobile

We decided to leave our resort and visit this beach for something different. The snorkeling was nice as we got two see 6 sea turtles and 2 sting rays. The negative of the beach is that it is very touristy and crowded. They do not rent beach chairs and the beach is extremely hard as the sand is not soft at all. That doesn't mean I wouldn't recommend as seeing the turtles is the highlight. Great fun for the family.

“amazing beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2014

you could snorkel anywhere and see blue fish, yellow stripped fish, turtles and barracudas....we love to snorkel and also went on a catamaran snorkel trip that was amazing.....the reef and fish were outstanding however the beach is so amazing you don't even need to take a boat ride....get the snorkel gear and check it out. love this beach

“Great snorkeling beach that is not too crowded”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2014

Akumal Beach is south of Playa near XPLOR and Xel-Ha. It has been popular with local for fishing for a very long time. The size and shape of the bay makes it great for snorkeling. You can see as much snorkeling in Akumal Bay ay you could scuba diving in PDC or Cancun.

Don't worry about the hotels being built and limiting your beach access. If you wish, you can walk right through a hotel report's lobby and head out to the beach. Mexico does not permit ownership of beaches in front of properties. Many resorts are happy to have you stay with them, use a cabana, buy food and drinks, and even use the pool. There is usually a small entrance type fee and then you just pay for food and drinks to be brought to you. (Make sure that you tip decently. Giving $20 up front to your server will all but guarantee prompt and helpful service all day long.)
