“Ten days in paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

We travelled to the Grand Bahia Principe Sian Ka'an the first week of February for a relaxing vacation. We booked through Air Canada Vacations - which had its own hiccups, for a ten day stay in a regular room. I had emailed ahead of time to book a la carte restaurant reservations which were all ready for us when we arrived. After a long bus ride, our check in was easy and efficient and we were greeted with a welcome margarita.

Our Room was very modern in its decoration and well appointed - free large safe, a fridge that included a few small bottles & mini bar. Shower only in the very nice bathroom - lots of towels, but no washcloths. Flat screen TV in the room with a few English channels - CNN and BBC news to keep up on what was happening in the world. We got a different towel animal each day on our king size bed which one day was covered in flower petals.

The food was excellent - I've been to many all inclusives and would say that it was the best of them so far. We did a different a la carte each night, but would have been happy with the buffet - lots of choices and we certainly didn't suffer, nor did we get sick which is a first I think. We both liked Maiko, thought Alux was okay but not great - he liked Gran Tortuga - while I think I liked the Arlequin better. We both enjoyed the sushi both at the sushi bar and the buffet.

I spent each morning at the beach enjoying the turquoise water and white sand while my boyfriend golfed. The shuttle to the beach is not a problem - we came back to the main pool each day around 2 to 3 pm when the activity staff moved over from the beach. The beach was beautiful - but then the sand bags don't bother me. Nice to not have to do the towel dance with towel cards..... beach bar was busy but they also came around and took drink orders which was nice : ) They stop serving mixed drinks at the pool bar around 4:45 each day which was a bit of a drag as I don't like beer.

My boyfriend is a golfer and golfed four times - paid $240 for the four rounds for the carts. He liked the driving range and the course and enjoyed most of his golf companions. He said that he got great service from Alfredo at the course. He did lose lots of balls....... like others have posted.

So - suggestions? Not much in the shop to purchase. I wish they had hooks in the women's washroom stalls to hang towels, etc. on. The spa was okay, but expensive (I had a pedicure and a massage - was stiff for days!)

We had a wonderful trip and can't wait to go back. Maybe two weeks this time????

Room Tip: We were in Villa 15B - it was a good location - fairly quiet.

This is a gem of a resort- best time ever on a vacation and everyone is so helpful and friendly. If you have a concern the staff is so quick to try and help resolve. Food (presentation in a la cartes is superb) and service is exceptional and this is just a fantastic place to stay. If your a picky eater they have EVERY kind of food available. This resort is very quiet if you don't like alot of noise. The resort also had it's own little shuttle(runs constantly) that takes you to an exclusive area of the beach for Sian Ka'an which was really nice as this resort is quite far from the ocean.
Make sure you bring your own lap top or tablet if you want internet access as the ones at the resorts are not too reliable(if you can find one to use).

5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

We have been a many 5 stars in Mexico and the Caribbean, but this one is truly a five. When my wife and i go on a trip all we want to do is relax. We are not into the night life at all, and typically do not engage with other couples. We are here for us and us alone. This hotel allowed us to do this in a lap of luxury and style that is unsurpassed. Here are the highlights....in no particular order.

1. Location

The location of SK is located about 5 mins from the beach (by shuttle). We didn't mind this at all because any windy days by the beach were not felt at the pools surrounding the SK. Shuttle arrived every 5 mins and can take you to the beach or any of the 3 resorts on the property. Only guests of the SK were allowed on the SK grounds. As an added bonus, no kids under 16 were allowed at this resort....we left our 13 and 10 year old at home......

2. Pools

Although they were 3 pools, we parked our butts at the pool over by the Sushi Bar. They actually had soft beds with pillows to lie on. We reserved these every morning before 7 am. and it was worth it. This pool was very quiet, no SK sponsored activities were allowed. Also, there were no limits on towels and you did not need a towel card. The pool was right beside a small bar that also offered sushi. We stayed here during the majority of the trip......paradise

3. Food

The food at the buffets, as well as at the Japanese and French restaurants were great. We did not have a bad meal, all were great. When we did venture off to the other resorts for lunch or dinner, we did notice a degrade in the quality of the food. We only did that a couple of times.

4. Service

The service we received was second to none, whether is was served drinks at the beach or stellar service in our hotel room or at the restaurants. In addition, our room was cleaned before 11 am everyday. it was spotless when we came back for an afternoon rest. Everyday we received little gifts in our room, from a bottle of champagne, to deserts to a couple of tshirts the day we left. We also received a daily call from Management asking if we needed anything.....

5. Room

My wife booked a room with a hot tub upgrade. This was absolutely fabulous. It was first level room. Other than the penthouse, which was booked, all the hot tub rooms are on the first floor. The room was awesome, beautiful king bed, lovely section sitting area and dining table if you wanted to order the included room service. The bar fridge had pop, beer, mini bottles of alcohol and huge bottle of water. Needless to say they needed to replenish the bar everyday....The bath room was great, with a large shower. The TV was a modern flat screen with HDMI ports. I hooked up my laptop to it and we watched a couple of movies on it in the evening.

I have nothing but praise about the room and the cleaning staff. One other thing i will mention is the cooling system. The hotel room had 2 air conditioning units with a remote control. We were able to perfectly adjust the A/C in the room. This is a huge benefit as most of the time in other resorts, it is either too cold or too hot.

Another unique feature we experienced was the room security. After a great day, we went bad to the room and the room key would not allow us in. I thought that i demagnetized the cards, as I have done before many times. I went to the lobby and they explained to me that since i left the safe open when I left - no one but the head of security could open the door. Wow, pretty impressive! Once the security guy let me in - the cleaning staff came in about 15 mins and made up the room and replenished the bar!......

My wife and i used the hot tub a couple of times at night. The tub is surrounded by vegetation and very private. We had no problem going in nude a couple of times :)

6. Beach

As I mentioned, the beach is a 5 min shuttle from the SK lobby. Once you reach the beach, the guests have a private beach area. Once we found our spot, a server would come around and serve us drinks. We appreciated that. We went to the beach a couple of times and enjoyed it.

Well - that about does it....if you are looking for a real five star hotel, with plans to quietly relax , take it from me - look no further.......

Room Tip: get upgrade for hot tub - if you like first level room more private by the Sushi bar..

5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013 via mobile

Travelled from freezing winter in Canada to Grand Bahia Principe Sian Ka'an at the end of January 2013 with my spouse for a relaxing vacation and GBP-SK totally delivered. The excellent service began prior to our arriving as Marie and Claudia (guest services) honoured our email request for a la carte restaurant reservations and room requests. Our reservations and room requests were made exactly as we hoped. Upon arrival, check in was easy and efficient and we were greeted with a welcome margarita as we disembarked the bus which was a nice touch.

Our Room was well appointed and was spotless. We appreciated the use of a free large safe, a complementary mini bar, and the bed and pillows were quite comfortable. The bathroom was very nice and the TV in the room was modern with a few English channels. The housekeeping was excellent during our stay and we appreciated receiving a different towel animal each day on our king size bed which was often also covered in flower petals. We loved the location of our room on the first floor which was directly beside the Cenote snack bar and main activity pool.

The Staff at GBP-SK were wonderful and service throughout the resort was more than satisfactory. There were several staff members who went above and beyond with their customer service and would like to give them the accolades they deserve. At the SK buffet, Ancelmo was a star; he greeted us every morning at breakfast and gave fast and efficient service. Aurora, omelette chef, made delicious omelettes every morning and always had a kind word and a beautiful smile. Nereida at the BAHIA Spa was AMAZING. Although the services are pretty pricey ... the massage and facial I received was absolutely worth every penny... Best massage and facial I have ever had! Jesus at the pool bar was always extremely busy but handled the customers with such ease and mixed wonderful cocktails. And our favourite by far was Carlos at The Cenote Snack Bar ... He went out of his way to meet our needs throughout our stay and by the end of trip he felt like family to us. Thank you Carlos for being such a superstar ... My spouse loved his special Carlos mojitos and I loved my afternoon snack of cheese fingers ... Yummy! the staff are hardworking and for little pay ... PLEASE make sure you tip the employees who make your stay special ... THEY DESERVE IT!!!

We enjoyed the beach and were not bothered by the 5-8 minute tram ride to the GBP-SK exclusive beach. We liked that no towel cards were needed (like other resorts) and plenty of towels were always available. We were always able to find shade under a palapa at the beach which was very important to us. My only suggestions for the beach are that they add more servers and/or bartenders at the SK exclusive beach bar as they were having a hard time keeping up with demand during peak hours. Also, additional maintenance should be to keep this stretch of beach free from rocks along the shoreline. Lovely view and crystal clear water were great!

The food was outstanding throughout the GBP SK and its sister resorts ... We did not have even one bad meal. We ate breakfast daily at the SK buffet which was plentiful and of high quality for an AI buffet. The a la carte restaurants were excellent; our favourites in order were Le Gourmet, Mikado, Don Pablo and Alux. The food was a vast improvement over other AI in Mexico we have been to.

The pools were well maintained and we enjoyed much of our vacation around the main activity pool. We enjoyed the bingo in the afternoon, impromptu mini performances, and additional activities poolside from approx. 3-6 pm. We wish there were more activities (full day) available at SK similar to what is listed at the sister resorts. We definitely enjoyed that this resort was 18+ and that a very relaxed and laid back vibe was promoted at SK.

The only major disappointment at the resort was the FREE very poor Internet wifi service. We could very rarely (maybe 2x in the entire week) get a connection in our room. We also had very limited success in the lobby of GBP-SK. We were unable to check or send email or Skype/FaceTime as we like to keep in touch with our family back home. The sister resorts lobby's were a bit better, but we shouldn't have to take a tram ride to use the Internet.

In conclusion, we enjoyed our week long vacation at GBP-SK immensely and would most definitely return to this resort. We believe we received excellent value for the price paid and hope the resort remains affordable. Next time, I would consider upgrading to a penthouse jacuzzi suite and try to extend my our vacation to two weeks. One week is just not enough in paradise!!!

My wife and I stayed at the Luxury Bahia Principe Sian Ka'an for 9 days in November, 2012. This was our 14th trip to Cancun, Cozumel, Puerto Morelos and/or Playa Del Carmen but our first to Akumal. This resort tops all the other adult-only all-inclusives we've visited.

Even though this is not a beach-front property you never feel that it's an inconvenience to take the tram to Sian Ka'an's private beach (and it is your own private beach if you're staying at Sian Ka'an). The beach entrance is rather rocky; however, we saw workers in the water for hours hauling out coral in 5-gallon buckets. The beach service is excellent with all your favorite adult beverages available from the Holbox bar. Paloma and Selene are always close by when your beverage starts getting low. Selene was my favorite at all of Sian Ka'an, especially with her good-natured way of teaching us Spanish. She's a sweetheart!

Because you have access to all the restaurants at the four Bahia Principe properties it’s difficult to try them all during a week-long stay. The restaurants varied somewhat and my wife and I didn't always agree on the quality of the food.

Arlequin at Bahia Principe Akumal – Good food and good service.
Le Gourmet at Bahia Principe Coba – We ate here twice. Victor was an excellent waiter. My wife loved the soups here and I had a very good filet.
Mikado Japanese at Bahia Principe Coba – This was a just-average Japanese restaurant with a nice cooking show.
Tequila Mexican at Bahia Principe Tulum – I really liked the salad bar. My wife was not enthused with the meal.
Alux at Bahia Principe Sian Ka'an – We ate here twice. My wife enjoyed the ambiance and the food. I’m not a great fan of French food or the portion sizes.
Buffet at Bahia Principe Sian Ka'an – We ate all our breakfasts and lunches here. There is an excellent variety for both meals. The quality was outstanding. A special thanks to Blanca and Faustino for their friendliness and great service. My coffee cup was never empty at breakfast.

We attended a time-share presentation while here and even though we did not purchase we received two complimentary cart fees for the golf course. Golf is free if you’re staying at the Sian Ka’an but comes with a caveat – the cart fee is an exorbitant $65 so the time spent at the time-share presentation was worthwhile. The golf course is fantastic. It may be one of the best I’ve ever played. I would encourage you to take your clubs to play this great course.

The Bahia Principe Sian Ka'an has now surpassed the Iberostar Gran Paraiso as our favorite upscale Riviera Maya resort.

Room Tip: Penthouse on third floor is excellent.

This low-key, relatively small, adult-only resort offers excellent food and service. Our observations by category are:

Restaurants: Alux (Mayan word pronounced "Aloosh") and Maiko both excellent...you can dine at them multiple times...do so...they are better than the other resort a la cartes because the service is professional, not rushed and they bring you premium liqueurs and coffees after the three course dinner. Le Gourmet at Coba was also good but it was rushed due to the volume of diners they cycled through. The buffet was always fresh with a stong variety of foods to please all tastes. Gala nights at the buffet on Saturdays have fresh lobster dependent of the catch of the day...make sure you ask the relationship desk if they have lobster on that day as they didn't when we were there, but we had booked an alternate a la carte just in case.

Rooms: Classy junior suites in a minimalistic style with good beds, pillows and linens...beware, there is little storage space as in this case design triumphed over practicality. Great A/C and beautiful window wallls brought the jungle into the room creating lots of light and space. We had the most basic room package and it was great...you don't need to upgrade unless you want a garden or penthouse jacuzzi.

Resort: Modern design aesthetics in a minimally disturbed jungle setting...most of the villas are hidden in the dense jungle producing natural privacy and little wind (compared to the beach resorts). The four pools are not heated but each offers its own unique ambiance. The multiple bars offered premium drinks with the lobby bar carrying top-shelf brands - service was quick and efficient and no one expected to be tipped.

Shuttles: Efficent and quick...we never waited more than ten minutes.

Beach Area: A quick ten-minute ride away, the beach is perfectly situated in a gorgeous setting between the Tulum and Akumal beach areas...there is lots of beach to walk on, people watch and explore these other two resorts...plus a deluxe beach bar and waiter service...wow!

Overall, a 5-star experience that we have since recommended to many friends...and we don't even like to golf!

First of all, our trip started with a smooth flight from Ottawa on time....arrived in Cancun customs was smooth grabbed a cold beer right outside the airport and boarded out bus to the Sian Ka'an. Arrived at the hotel and was greeted by the AMAZING Claudia who is the most kindest person she took care of our every need. Pre-booked all our dinner prior to arrival. Our Penthouse was ready upon our arrival stunning, used our private hottub every afternoon with the setting sun and looking at the stars while enjoying a glass of champagne was a very nice touch.....The food at the buffets was the best we have ever had and we only travel to 5* Resorts... The service was outstanding from buffets to A la Cartes.....I would highly recommend this resort for people looking for a quiet relaxing holiday and lots of TLC....A special thanks goes out to my husband GOOD JOB on picking our holiday resort!!!!!! xox Already planning our return visit for next year!!!!

Room Tip: If you do have the Penthouse be careful can be very slippery....I have a bruise to prove it LOL
