“Gran Bahia Sian Ka'an --EXCELLENT!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2012

We visited the Sian Ka'an Bahia January 19-25. It was our 7th visit to the Bahia and our first stay at the Sian Ka'an. We had our daughter's wedding at the Tulum resort 2 years ago also...We love the Bahia!!

We contacted the resort prior to arriving and scheduled all of our dinners and requested jacuzzi suites....We were on the first floor of our building and did have a jacuzzi suite and a great location near the pool and short walk to the lobby. We were told we could change to the penthouse the next day-but after realizing the rooms were the same we decided to stay on the first floor... The rooms at Sian Ka'an are much larger than the rooms at the other Bahia resorts and much more modern. Our room was perfect for a week's stay. Our fridge was refilled EVERY day and we recevied great surprises each evening from tee shirts to chocolate covered strawberrys to wine and chocolate desserts....If you handle your dinner reservatons prior to arrival be sure to print your reservation confirmation e-mail and bring it with you as it helps expidite your reservation upon arrival to the restaurant. Sian has a more mellow feel than Coba, Tulum or Akumal--the pools are relaxing and you really feel you are at a 5 star resort. There is a private beach for those staying at Sian with the upgraded lounge chairs- and a bar with waitress service to your beach area.

The Lobby Bar- is a GREAT place to have a drink as long as OSCAR is the bartender....He is amazing!! Watch his technique--he makes sure his drinks are to perfection before giving them to his guests and his customer focus is second to none....OSCAR makes the LOBBY BAR!! He works from 7-3 so we always made sure to have a couple drinks stacked up at 2:55!! There should be videos of him on you tube so check those out. All of the staff at the Lobby bar work very hard to keep the customers happy and it shows....

We ate at both restaurants at Sian and were thriled with the meals and service. Notice the stemware at ALUX the restaurant by the pool....it is beautiful!! We also dined at Don Paublos'---one of our fav's--reserve early in the evening--it is a long meal--but well worth it- Pescador (fish & sea food)Frutos del Mar( Seafood and fish) and Dolce Vita..All of our meals were wonderful and the restuarant mangers work so hard to please their guests. Our buffet was great for breakfast and lunch--but also try the buffets at Tulum and Coba...they are very nice also.

The transportation to the other resorts was not a problem...we traveled back and forth several times a day.....Golf course was beautiful!!! Cart rental was $80.00--but to play a course like that for $80.00 is a steal.....

Only problem we had was my husband cut his foot getting out of our jacuzzi--there is a space between the concrete pad and where the mable tile starts for the patio....it required 6 stitches...There is an on site physician...he was excellent.......So if you have a jacuzzi suite be aware of that.... One other comment --since the resort is in the jungle there is fog bug spraying that takes place every other day about 4:30....it is a very thick fog and you will hear it coming...we covered our faces with our towels so as not to breath the fumes the frist time--but tried to be at the beach or indoors after that when it would take place....If you have children or are pregnant be aware........

All in all--GREAT trip..if it is your first time to the area be sure to do the tulum ruins and coba ruins...rent a taxi driver for the day...and get to the coba ruins as soon as they open..the tours buses take over by 9 a.m. and it is very crowded.....
and get back by 3 to get a great drink from OSACR!!

Room Tip: ground level--avoid stairs~~

Had an awesome time here. The resort is beautiful and definitely the nicest part of the Gran Bahia complex. If you stay in this section of the resort you get lots of added perks that guests in other sections do not, such as: unlimited dining at gourmet a la carte restaurants, top shelf liquor at the lobby bar, free wifi throughout resort, and an exclusive beach section with drink service. We enjoyed checking out all different beaches, pools, and bars. The trams between resorts could be a bit confusing when we first arrived, but we quickly caught on, and never had to wait too long. The gourmet restaurants at Sian Ka'an were our favorites, Alux, and Maiko. Arlequin was also great. Le Gourmet, and Pescador were lacking a bit. They were still good, just not what I would classify as gourmet. The breakfast buffet was great at Sian Ka'an, especially the omelet/egg station, and we had a good lunch every day at the Akumal buffet. Our only complaints were that it was impossible to get the mini bar refilled as it was supposed to be, we finally gave up.....and we had to call and ask for more bottled water every day, which was supposed to be refilled daily. Also it was always a bit of a wait to get drink service at the buffets. But everyone was very friendly. Besides, when you're in Mexico it's hard to complain about such small things :) Also some of the bars throughout he complex made amazing drinks, others were not so good.....but we quickly found our favorites. If you want to go into Akumal, or to visit a cenote, it's easy to catch a $3 bus at the resort entrance. We had an amazing vacation and would go back!

We stayed at Sian Ka'an from 15 -22 January, travelling with Air Canada Vacations. We had a Superior Junior Suite and requested a second floor unit overlooking the pools. We had technical problems contacting Claudia by email before our arrival but did manage to touch base the day before we left. All 6 of our ALC requests were met, although 2 were 30 minutes later than requested. We were thrilled with this level of service and lost no time queing to make reservations on our vacation.

Our room was on the second floor in Building 23 and looked over the pool at an angle and from a distance. Claudia was apologetic saying that this was the best she could do with the short notice available when we finally touched base. Neither of these were a problem and we were thrilled to even have the option of making requests like this. ACV also only offered the Suprior Junior Suite with no upgrade option, although we likely wouldn't have used it as we spend minimal time in our rooms.

The resort is obviously positioning itself as the upscale member of the GBP Riviera Maya hotels and we think it achieved this hands down. Combine this with the fact that for ACVat least it was the cheapest of the 4 we feel that we got a steal of a deal that surely cannot last. As it becomes better known I envision the prices creeping up. Go now while it's such a bargain.

There were lots of positives and a few minor negatives.

Pros.
The upscale feel of the entire resort. It is similar in decoration and vibe to many newer Westin properties but at a significantly lower price.

The level of exclusivity you get. I know that sounds snobby but it truly was nice to have dedicated restaurants and beach areas. Perhaps because they were so much calmer and more relaxed than the other areas it was a relief to get back and relax with a nice cocktail in the lobby bar. At the same time you had full access to everywhere else ( and in fact with regards to ALC reservations even better access than guests of those resorts had themselves). The feeling of exclusivity and calm after the hustle and bustle of the other hotels made it an oasis we were thrilled to retreat to.

The restaurants were all superb. Alux was one of our favourites as was Maiko. Maiko is really Pan Asian rather than Japanese IMO but the service and food were impeccable nonetheless. The buffet was also extremely good, although we only ate breakfast and lunch there. On the one morning we had to eat at Tulum to catch a 7:30 excursion all I can say is that we were very disappointed with the food, service and ambience. Similarly when we ate lunch one day at the Akumal Buffet. There was such an urgency to finda table at the other resorts, something we never experienced at SK.

The sushi bar is a nice quiet and tucked away little treat ,serving a limited menu of , nevertheless, tasty sushi treats and drinks for a light lunch or midafternoon snack.

The Lobby and Terrace bars were also exceptional with attentive service and an extensive included drink list. On the occassions when we stopped off at the Coba or Tulum lobby bars for a pre dinner drink we found the selection much more limited, seats hard to find, service slower and we wished we'd stayed at SK for our drinks.

Some people have complained about the beds ( fine from our perspective) as well as the lack of storage. In our case we had shelves in the closet as well as hangers. So what that they weren't drawers. They worked just fine. No need to live out of suitcases as some have suggested.

The issue of blind transparency has been solved in the newer rooms at least, with a second layer of blinds. When some guests didn't use them you could certainly get an unexpected eyeful when walking past.

Shuttles. Never an issue at all. 5-10 min wait max ( usually less than 5 ). At the beach in 6- minutes or the Hacienda or other lobbies in a similar time.

Beach perfect. Beach bar service exceptional.

Only got my laptop out of the safe twice. Both times had no problems whatsoever getting the net in our room.

Cons.

There is an issue with the hot water but it was rarely a problem after the first day when we figured it out. Turn it as hot as you can and then reduce the pressure. Never got too hot after we did that. The rapid change from hot to cold suggests pressure equalization problems to me and should be fixed or it will continue to irritate people. To us it was nothing more than a minor inconvenience but I can see it being an issue for the mobility impaired in particular.

The finish of the rooms and their fittings, including the the newer blinds, is not where it perhaps should be for a true 5 star resort but then you are not really paying a 5 star price. However, the finish is more than adequate and providing the resort is maintained as well and as regularly as it seems to be at present I'm sure it will continue to offer exceptional value for money.

I agree that the alarm clock radios should be upgraded. We tried to tuneto a channel, any channel, just to have some music while getting ready in the mornings. Nada. If there are no stations available please don't trick me. Give me a clock with no radio. Seriously though that was trivial and not a concern at all.

I just returned last week from an 8-day stay at Gran Bahia Principe Sian Ka'an. I must admit that I had much more fun than I expected. Although it is a family resort, they made sure that singles can have a great time and meet people!

They have a "disco" every night at the Hacienda, which turned out to be an excellent way to meet people staying at the other properties. Sian Ka'an is exclusively for Sian Ka'an guests, so guests at the other properties can't visit the property, but Sian Ka'an guests have access to all 4 resort properties.

The service was great and everyone is incredibly friendly. I was able to see a room at Akumal and in comparison to Sian Ka'an, there is none. Sian Ka'an is definitely a nicer property and much more modern than the other properties, which lean towards fiesta colors and styles.

The best beaches and activities are definitely at Akumal and Tulum and the peace and quiet is at Sian Ka'an. If you want a quiet place to lay your head at night, stay at Sian Ka'an and visit the other properties for your fun. The nightly disco is well worth the wait until midnight to have a great time. The trams that run between the properties make it really easy to get around. It takes a bit of time to get back and forth between Sian Ka'an and the other properties, but the drivers are super friendly and will talk to you the entire time.

The entertainment at the other properties is much more youthful than the entertainment at Sian Ka'an, which presents much more a lounge experience than a party atmosphere.

The food was great at all locations and the reservation system for the restaurants throughout the 4 resorts makes it very easy to visit all of them. The buffets were really good too.

The shops on site are quite expensive in regards to everyday items and there isn't any nearby shopping in walking distance, so try to remember everything that you might need during your stay. For example, a bottle of Aloe Vera Gel costs $15 USD and a 10-pack of band-aids costs $4 USD! The $20-30 cost to check a bag will be money well spent to hold your essentials and avoid excessive costs.

The resort is over an hour from the airport, so be prepared for a long drive, but be ready to relax and enjoy yourself once you arrive. The drinks are constantly flowing and the food is readily available. After you eat, take a nap and head to the Hacienda for the midnight dance party! You will meet plenty of people to hang out with for the rest of your trip.

I had a blast! I’m already planning a return trip in February or March! :)

Room Tip: It doesn't matter which room you get. The entire property is quiet after 10 PM. I had a jacuzzi...

Just got back and hope everyone who is looking forward to going has great of a trip too.

Room - had penthouse suite with jacuzzi on terrace. Wrote Claudia in advance and asked for room with jungle view not staring at other roof tops possibly villa 7 or 9 and a memory foam topper on the bed. We got the perfect room 40923. View was great. The room had the welcome letter with our 2 reservations for "la Gourmet" that I had asked for, memory foam on the bed that it made it a dream sleep, and a fully stocked fridge with champagne (think that might have been because we are returning guests). Room always cleaned quite nicely except for a swished bug high up on a wall that stayed there from the time we got there to when we left even when my husband pointed it out to the guy cleaning our room (yes, I said guy....not all ladies. It is nice to see it is not a "ladies only" job.). fridge hit or miss for getting filled. 85% of the time it was filled with water and 2 beer and the pop but vodka never replaced (even though we never drank it, they actually took stuff out some days.) some days we got chocolate bars also, but not always. Think it may have been a matter of hauling drinks and water, coffee, chips up and down all the stairs by the time he got to our room he gave what he could. Oh yah, they really should put a dresser some where in the room. Some furnishings cheaper than other resorts....ie alarm clocks try an iPod docking clock. Just found other hotels had maybe minor things that don't make or break a trip but it does show overall. Extra special towel art on our anniversary - Claudia your notes on file were the A++ of the day.

Food - buffet was great. I am a totally picky eater and I always was happy with what I found. Hint take a small amount and if you want more go back....horrible to see the waste. And tip a little at the buffet....shocked to see how many people did not tip. The staff ran around like crazy cleaning tables, serving drinks, clearing plates. Take a second to sit back and see how these amazing people are busting their butts to service you. Went to 4 ala carte restaurants liked la gourmet at coba, portifino at coba, Japanese at sian kaan, didn't care for Alux at sian kaan but my husband loved the mushroom soup. Loved the buffet so really liked going there.

Trains - perfect. Never waited more than 5 minutes but usually less than that. I am calling bull on anyone who says they waited more than a few minutes.

Entertainment team - very nice people. Only found one that was a little phoney when they smiled or spoke to you. Out of respect, I will not say who, but all others were super great. Tried yoga by the pool, great start for the morning, try it once at least. Spanish lessons - I think I need to take more but it was fun. Try tequila bingo at the pool bar, or bacci ball. We did not really like the caliber of evening entertainment at Sian Kaan more just a grade for effort. It is a much lower key than other parts of Bahia resort which we loved and could not wait to get back to. If you are single, young and want to party, maybe one of the other sections are better for you.

Beach - great just a short train ride. Great beach bar. Service right to your chair. Was nice to see that they did ask people to go that we're not sian kaan guests same at the pools at sian kaan.

Golf - laugh when they say FREE golf then have the nerve to charge $80 for cart.... Must have been great though my husband did it 6 times and said it was a great deal and everyone else we talked to could not stop talking about how great the course was at this hole or that hole..... I tune out at a certain point. But they talked a lot about how great it was. I did go ask about renting clubs to use the driving range and they said it was $10 which sounded great and the driving range was even great. Beer on course not included so bring the ones from your room. Guess they have a cooler on cart. Book early morning ie before 7:30 if you can do it as it gets really hot on the course.

General - truly a great trip nothing negative I have said are deal breakers just small things. Ie no ice machines in villas or ice buckets in room (I bring an cooler bag and like to have it at the pool or beach. They were great about filling it though.). Dont like the dolphins at the resort ouside the sian kaan beach section. Watch "the cove" and then ask yourself how you feel about dolphins in captivity like this. And it is way, way too small of a tank....ocean...pool the size of you swimming in your bathtub the rest of your life...I will stop there.

Bring bug spray. Fine wk one, wk two...new thirsty batch must have hatched and very hungry. They do fog daily but you can't stop everything after all you are in the tropics.

Really not for families and would like to see it be adults only as they don't have kids activities and they seem to interfere with the zen type atmosphere the resort offers. And parents think twice about taking your kids to the ala cartes if they can't be quite or sit still for a fine dining experience....you may think your child's whining is minor or their playing (ie swinging a yo yo....yup you heard me!) is no big deal but you are RUDE to everyone else who's meals are less than enjoyable by your gems behavior.

Closing - get in now as this great deal for a wonderful resort can only go up in price. Rob thanks for all your wonderful posts reviews & forum and adding pictures to your links. Rob and all others on trip advisor who were great before we left and I wanted to give back by adding my 2 cents. Only gave it a 4 because they have a couple of growing points but feel confident in saying it was a great choice. Too bad there is not a 4.95 choice.

Room Tip: Room 40923 had a great view from terrace looking at jungle.

My husband & I just got back from a week at this resort. This place is pretty laid back & was terrific for relaxing. A pretty new resort & even tho it is still getting things in order, this was great. Our large room was on the bottom floor at the back of the resort with a large patio with 2 lounge chairs & a table/chairs & an outside jacuzzi. We were not bothered by bugs outside but I think that is because they fogged every afternoon. Late night walking to & from dining, you might want to spray, seemed I got a few bites on the ankles but that is nothing, that happens worse in Texas - ha. The room was spacious & so clean & uncluttered. Large bar area with table & chairs, divan, coffee table, large bed & flat screen t.v. The bathroom was a good size as well as the shower. Our shower worked great. The weather was so nice that we were in the pool everyday & the jacuzzi just about every afternoon if we could pry ourselves away from the pool area. The place has several pools but none of them are really big so the water is warmer than in most - not that it was warm but very nice. Always found a lounger at one pool or another. No pool towel cards required so it was nice not to have to keep up with your towels. No swimup bar but that was ok, need to get out & about anyway. Drinks were good, the premium alcohol was only at the lobby bar, again that is ok, you could for sure find something good to satisfy your thirst at all of them. The food was fantastic esp. at the buffet, yes the buffet. The breakfast, lunch, & dinner meals there were great, grilled shrimp, steaks, grouper.... The 2 ala carte on the property were good & gave you an upscale feeling. The employees were great, friendly, & all you had to do was ask & it was given. The maid service was really nice, our room was cleaned every day by 10 a.m. Evening entertainment was low keyed which was great for us, however you have the opportunity to go to the other sister resorts & find anything that you are looking for. We road over to the private beach that is across the highway one day & walked the other resorts. Plenty of shopping over at the other resorts where as the Sian Ka'an had 2 smaller shops. The grounds are good for not being open a long time & it is well lit when you are wanting to walk back to your room in the evening. We would go back for sure. The only thing that I would suggest to the resort is since the pools are smaller, it only takes one or two kids to disturb the relaxing days, so maybe they might make one pool all adult & that way everybody is happy. If you get the chance to go here, all I can say is GO - RUN - you will enjoy.

Room Tip: The 2nd floor rooms do not have much of a balcony, so if you like to sit out, then you may want a gr...

I just returned home from a week at the upscale Gran Bahia Principe resort...the Sian Ka'an, The resort is onits way to being a 5 star Golf resort, BUT, the villas are not ready. They are modern and beautiful, but not quality built. We had no hot water for three days, only one air conditioner unit worked in our room and when reported to maintenance, they responded, but the language barrier was a huge problem. It was "froze up" and they did not understand. So we just cut the unit off and used only the one for the remainder of the trip and it was plenty cool in our room. We had no mini bar service until the last 2 days of our vacation, so no drinks in our room or snacks. We called room service a few times, but they were always out of what we ordered and when we ordered drinks, only brought it to the room by the glass with no ice. I did eenjoy the tranquility of it being away from the other big resorts and because the timeshare people were only at the Bahia Coba. We loved the small private beach at Sian Ka'an and the Hacienda and collectivo for our transportation were the best kept secrets.
Food was good. Service was hit or miss, but all in all a nice trip.

Room Tip: Penthouse suite is worth the uprade of $100 per week. It adds the entire top level and outdoor hot...
