We planned our trip to Mexico at the end of a city break trip to a couple of US cities wanting to warm up after a cold English winter. We are regular Four Seasons users and were hopeful that the Punta Mita resort would match up to the sublime experience that we had in Malaysia last year. This was the primary reason we chose the 'brand'. However, I just felt that something was lacking on several levels in Punta Mita. We were in a perfectly pleasant Garden Suite which faced the ocean and was pretty well appointed. However, the regular daily service levels were inconsistent - plates left in the room post-service, water not always re-supplied, mini bar not always refilled. Not holiday destroying, but still not quite what was expected. We ate at the grill restaurant on the beach and in the asian restaurant and again had inconsistent food that went from the sublime to the ridiculous, as did the service. When asking if it was possible to get our main course in the asian restaurante, after a wait of some 40 minutes or so following our starters we were advised that we were unlucky to have got behind a large group! Is that really my problem? Surely they shouldn't have accepted our booking then..... Admittedly they did concede that we'd been treated shoddily and paid for our drinks but that's not the point. And always, always the food and drink is priced at a very high premium. We also ate at the Tail of the Whale out at the golf course on a film night, and have to say that the (on this occasion) buffet type food was appallingly bad. Breakfasts was....breakfast - I have a problem with breakfasts in resorts I admit, because by the third day I'm stir crazy with the same stuff on offer (however wide the variety) so I've learned not to really criticise as it's almost certainly me... The nicest part of the whole holiday for me was the service at the pool bar - the guys running the poolside had it sussed - the resort wasn't super busy but they saved the same sunbeds for us each day and even remembered (ahem) that we needed an ashtray.
I haven't quite written off the Four Seasons brand yet, but will be very very wary of going to their resorts again. Perhaps the manager should show his face more frequently instead of hanging out with the 'golf set' and charging $75 per head to come to his reception. I know that on this occasion it was related to something to do with charity (I don't speak Spanish) but he needs to take a leaf out of the management team at the Langkawi Four Seasons and find out how to make guests really feel (a) able to talk directly about their experience of the premises (b) make the guests feel like he knew we were there.
