“You will love the proprietor, Enrique!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2008

We have visited Patzcuaro several times over 20 years and we found that we LOVED the quiet, professional and personal access to the owner and most helpful proprietor, Enrique Portillo.

Posada Mandala is by far the best located property in town. Quiet, beautiful views from upper rooms and well kept It is a small place and very well priced. I would stay there again and again but would choose the downstairs rooms as I am not a stair climber.

I mistakenly booked through an agency. It is much better to make you reservations through Enrique himself. Go to [-] instead to make your reservations. He is a wonder and the most delightful fellow
ever. I'm hoping he will find a property for me to purchase, but then I wouldn't get to stay at his Posada if that happened.

We found that the street in front of the Posada was safe parking and it is literally a block from the Plaza Grande where there is always coffee, food and festivities like Viejitos dancing, political rallies, artesans and more. But don't miss the Mercado!

If you want an authentic and comfortable stay while in Patzcuaro,
I hope you will choose Posada Mandala.

This quiet hotel is only 2 blocks off the main plaza, across the street from a basilica. The rooms are clean and plenty large, with the upper rooms 4, 5 & 6 opening onto a small deck with a pretty view out over tiled roofs toward green hills (at least during the rainy season). The owner Enrique was easy to work with -- he offered us use of the dining room and kitchen downstairs. He also answered email queries fairly quickly and stuck with the negotiated price we had settled on before arriving (something that wasn't always true for me in other places in Mexico.) I'd definitely return to this hotel the next time I visit Patzcuaro.

We traveled for 5 weeks in Mexico and found Posada Mandala to be the most endearing of all the places we stayed. The charm of the internal patio, having access to kitchen facilities and being centrally located in Patzcuaro makes it the perfect place to stay. The friendliness of the proprietor, Enrique, and the efficiency of other staff means Posada Mandala provides comfortable, clean, economical and unintrusive accommodation which is perfect in all ways.

Posada Mandala is simply a jewel of a small hotel. From it's affable proprietor, Enrique, to the lovely garden patio and the great view from room #5, it is just a lovely spot. We enjoyed the cool nights with plenty of extra blankets and the big windows that were easy to open and kept our room fresh and breezy. Listening to the rain on the tile roof, the birds singing in the morning and NO street noises made for a peaceful and relaxing stay. We would most definitely stay here again.

This was our second trip to Patzcuaro. Last time we stayed at the Posada la Basilica, and while it was lovely, we wanted someplace less pricey and on a less steep street - at 8K foot elevation this makes a difference.

We contacted Hotel Mandala after viewing their website, and the owner, Enrique Portillo, was welcoming and informative. We booked room number 6, which is a suite in combination with room 4 and has it's own private bath and separate stairway, as well as access to a terrace - 500 pesos per night.

We had use of the kitchen, allowing us to buy local food and prepare some of our own meals, and a coffeemaker. This was wonderful, and gave us a needed break from restaurant meals.

The rooms were very clean, and the bathroom was large and sparkling clean. Great towels. For people looking to save a little money, this is a great choice. Since the hotel is located on Lerin, two blocks up from Plaza Grande, it is way quieter than the hotels located on either plaza, with only occaisonal local traffic and no buses.

Room 1 is small and has a bathroom down the hall( $200MXN); rooms 2 & 3 share a bath, but the arrangement is well thought out($350MXN); room 5 is large, with 2 beds,a private bath and a terrace but the only access is a spiral staircase ($450MXN). Rooms 4/6 are a suite, not bad for a couple with kids. The bath and terrace are accessible from room 6, which has a double bed, and room 4 has two twin beds.

Senor Portillo was kind about our basic Spanish and we had some delightful conversations about the town. He was very good at being on hand to be helpful without being intrusive.

We plan to stay here again on our next trip to Patzcuaro in '09. This was the perfect balance between the convenience of a hotel and the amenities of staying with a friend.

  • Liked — Access to the kitchen.
  • Disliked — Would have liked a larger bed, but we managed.

Trying to book a place to stay in Patzcuaro by e-mail (we live in New Zealand) was difficult. I e-mailed several establishments and only one bothered to reply - Posada Mandala. I took this as a good sign (organised for a start!). Enrique was lovely to deal with by e-mail and equally as lovely in person. His Posada is close to the main square in Patzcuaro, tucked away on an historic street. It was lovely and clean, with extra blankets for the chilly Patzcuaro nights. Our room was quiet and large with an attached toilet and bathroom with plenty of hot water. The only downside was the vertical spiral staircase that linked our room to the fround floor. One wrong step and you could be toast. It didn't bother us overly but it wouldn't suit people with mobility issues.
