“Back Again After Two Years”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2011

This stay will be a total of 6 nights and it is still everything we remember! Once again, we got our favorite room, #15. Tourism is down so much in the State of Michoacan and Patzcuaro that so far, we are the only guests.

I have read a number of the negative comments about the loud music but in all of visits, we have never had that experience. Lucky I guess?

It remains as our favorite hotel in our Mexico travels!

A trip to Patzcuaro would be a treat but staying in Meson de San Antonio is like a vacation on vacation.
The rooms are huge, they have working fireplaces, the service is superb! Coffee and sweets in the morning in a beautiful kitchen is another treat, kitchen is also available if someone feels like cooking.
This place is a gem, stay there and you will not want to leave.
Thank you guys for making this place a home for us. Eva & Bogdan.

I suppose there are things I could complain about; it was somewhat difficult to start the fire the first night. The breakfast was just ok. However, this is one of the most romantic and atmospheric places I've ever stayed in, and I would stay there again in a heartbeat. My kids stayed in the notorious room #3 on a Wednesday and Thursday night; either the nightclub has closed or it doesn't open til the weekend. Bathrooms are large and water pressure is excellent. You could spend all day relaxing in the central courtyard or dining room, enjoying the incredible garden. Internet access was excellent.

We recently have returned from two nights at this wonderful old hacienda. This building was originally built some time in the 18th century, so as a result, in an effort to maintain its unique charm, you do give up some amenities. As an example, the only source of heat in the room is a fireplace in which a fire was laid each morning in anticipation of being needed in the evening - and it was!! However, our bathroom was very modern and large and the beds were comfortable. The rooms are arranged around a large interior courtyard where you could sit and enjoy your morning coffee. A light breakfast of coffee and pan dulces is available self serve style, which was adequate unless you are the kind of person that wants a big American style breakfast.

The rooms were kept spotless by the cleaning staff, and the breakfast was always ready for us in the morning by about 8:30, however, the front desk seems to be only staffed during checkout and checkin although we were always able to find someone if we needed something. English is not really spoken here so if you don't have at least a basic knowledge of Spanish, make sure that you have your phrase book handy.

The hotel is conveniently located in the historic center of Patzcuaro near the main cathedral and it is only a short walk to the main shops and restaurants. The town is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also one of the Magic Towns of Mexico. Strict building codes ensure that the charm of the historic center is preserved.

Driving in the historic area can be a challenge with numerous one way roads that never seem to be going the "right" way for where you are trying to get to. The roads are narrow which adds to the challenge, and if you are driving a large North American vehicle I am sure that there would be additional challenges.

Overall this hotel proved to be a good choice for us and provided us with the unique opportunity of staying in an old hacienda.

This small, family owned and operated hacienda was the highlight of our trip. The del Rio family made us feel at home. The rooms are all different and are tastefully decorated with period furniture and folk art. The location is perfect: across from the Basilica and two blocks from the central plaza. We did not experience the nightclub noise mentioned by others. Perhaps the club is no longer there.

I have to agree with many of the other reviewers. This is a beautiful hotel. However, you have to take the good with the bad:

The good:
The rooms are very clean with comfortable beds, soft pillows, a large bathroom with a regular shower and plenty of hot water. The location is excellent -- only two blocks from the Plaza Grande. There is also ample parking out front should you drive, like we did. I dont' know about the other rooms, but our room had a Frida theme, which was lovely. There is a television with cable. The free wifi had a very strong signal in our room. There is a gorgeous communal kitchen and sitting room, which you can see in the pictures on the hotel website.

The bad:
As is common in this part of Mexico (and maybe elsewhere) the rooms do not have heat. The only source of heat is the small fireplace which is supplied with 3 or 4 pieces of wood per night. The second night of our stay my husband was running a fever and they gave us a few extra pieces of wood upon request. The hotel is disturbingly dark after the owners go to sleep. They leave no lights on and it is difficult to even safely walk from the front door to the room after dark (6pm in the winter). The hotel is locked after dark and can only be entered by key, however, if I were travelling alone, I would not feel secure getting to and from my room by myself. That said, I am sure that one could ask the hotel to keep some lights on after dark.

You should bring your own shampoo and conditioner, as the hotel only supplies one small packet of shampoo per day. Also, bring your own washclothes and there are none.

Lastly, we stayed in the infamous Room 3. The hotel is almost completely empty, so I dont know why they put us in this room when they are aware of the noise from the night club below. We were not informed that noise would be a problem. The first night, the music was at a low level but the second nigh (a Monday) the music was VERY loud at midnight and later, until after 2am. With a city that shuts down around 10pm, 2am is very late for such loud music.

Overall, I would stay at this hotel again since it is very picturesque and in a good location. Although it can get cold, the hotel provides extra blankets and it is nice living the same way as the locals. I would suggest asking for a different room.

The hotel is a 4, but Room 3 is a 3.

I agree with the earlier review that if you stay in rooms 2 - 5 the music from below the meson is extremely loud. The Black Cat Tavern is currently open Friday through Sunday nights. It's been open for a year now. The music usually starts up around 11:15 PM and doesn't stop until 2:00 AM. The constant thumbing from the music below makes it extremely difficult to sleep. Otherwise, the Meson is very quiet, clean and a pleasant experience. The kitchen is an added plus as one can cook their meals there. The rooms have fireplaces and the Wi-Fi is an added plus. Unfortunately, when one makes a reservation in the above rooms, you aren't informed of the noise from the nightclub.
