Isla Janitzio is the principal island in Lake Patzcuaro. Over the Day of the Dead celebrations, young people use it as party central and it gets trashed. We visited it two days after, and it was recovering, but still not great. One of the other islands, Pacanda, was beautiful, and it's small graveyard was well cared for. The trip over and back on the ferry was fun, and the fishermen fishing with butterfly nets were fascinating.

“Worth the trip!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012

Fabulous boat ride over with wonderful photo opportunities! Island has great food, too many trinkets, and wonderful views. You must go inside the statue and walk up. There is wonderful art and history in there!

“It's ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

The ride out on muddy water is in a boat livened up with a band playing music. Have tips ready for the band and boat driver. The fishermen near the island stand up with the nets, then sit down. Not much of a show. Have tips ready. Climb to the top and go inside the statue - lots of murals.

“Picturesque island village”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

A lovely boat ride on Lake Patzcuaro takes you to this quaint island village, a bit hokey with its souvenir shops but worth a visit.

“Great day trip for families or couples seeking iconic tourism site”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012

My husband and I have visited the island twice, the first time hitting just the main attractions: village market, climb stairway straight up to the top of the hill, and visiting the museum inside the huge statue of Jose Morelos. The second time we visited we took the time to go a different pathway to the top and view the graveyard and less touristy areas. At the top we sat in the park and enjoyed watching the Mexican families who were visiting on vacation. This is a very picturesque location for photographers but probably not a great place to find bargain priced artisan wares. Knowing a little Spanish and the history of this island and the area makes this an enjoyable experience as well.
