“This is what tourism has brought but visit the other islands”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2012

Well maybe don't visit the other islands as tourism has brought little to Janitzio... Unfortunately Patzcuaro is seasonally overrun by particularly American tourists keen on the 'authentic' trip. Janitzio and the lake in general have suffered from poor water management and the lake is shrinking year-on-year. The other thing to remember is that Patzcuaro is a very poor area with many locals keen to make a little money of tourism. Very few people are employed at hotels and thus hawkers and peddlers as those on Janitzio are just people trying to make a living. It doesn't make Janitzio very charming, and the other islands are far more charming, but it is an honest face of Mexico. Patzcuaro is not an open-air museum of 'great authentic culture' and 'authentic handicrafts' where one can sip a nice coffee and eat nice food. It is a very poor city trying to get by and people there should be complimented for offering the world such a pretty face and tolerating the occasional obnoxious tourist thinking that money buys the world....

“why do people go here?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2012

Perhaps you've seen pictures of the day of the dead ceremonies on Isla Janitzio and have thought "hey, that looks like a cool place". At least, that's what we thought - and perhaps it is, on two days a year. But after visiting in the off season, we were very happy to get back on that boat to the mainland. The much vaunted cemetery is tiny, minimal and ill-tended. The church's only redeeming feature was the fact that its walls slanted outwards (unless you're into old, ripped paintings by mediocre artists). The restaurant we ate in was the worst meal we've had in the western hemisphere. Very disappointing and downright mystifying - why do people talk this place up? The boat ride was very nice though - especially coming back.

“gets big wraps, but there are better things to do”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2012

considering that the lake has very little fish left in it , the island loses a lot of its attraction,, also, do not eat the food over there as cleanliness is doubtful

“Touristy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2012

If you're going to spend more than a day in Patzcuaro, you sort of are obligated to take a boat to Janitzio, climb up to Morelos, and then climb a bit more up to the statue-building's wrist look-out. It's mildly interesting but overrated. The children nagging -- no, almost accosting at times -- to sell little pots or just to give them a coin pretty much ruins any benefit in going up to the top. And you really shouldn't eat the charales, the minnowish fish that the now highly contaminated lake used to be famous for.
