“gets big wraps, but there are better things to do”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2012

considering that the lake has very little fish left in it , the island loses a lot of its attraction,, also, do not eat the food over there as cleanliness is doubtful

“Touristy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2012

If you're going to spend more than a day in Patzcuaro, you sort of are obligated to take a boat to Janitzio, climb up to Morelos, and then climb a bit more up to the statue-building's wrist look-out. It's mildly interesting but overrated. The children nagging -- no, almost accosting at times -- to sell little pots or just to give them a coin pretty much ruins any benefit in going up to the top. And you really shouldn't eat the charales, the minnowish fish that the now highly contaminated lake used to be famous for.

“Ugh!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2012

Dreary place overrun by sad people trying to make a living selling junk and awful food. Only for tourists, not travelers. The statue that tops the island is totally fascist design and ugly. The view is beautiful, but not worth the trip.

“A tourist trap with no quick exit unless you want to swim.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2012

This was my second trip over here, I'd been a few years back and vowed never again but I thought I'd give it a chance to see if it had improved. If anything it is worse, the island is dirty, over crowded and smelly. From the moment you disembark you are bombarded with people trying to sell everything they can think of including key chains made in China! A tourist trap of the first order because, due to the fact that it is an island, one can't always get a boat out when one wants to leave - which in my case was right away.

There are far better things to see around Patzcuaro than this. If you want to see culture, prehispanic ruins and actual artisans and the wares they make, take a drive around the lake and check out Ihuatzio (Purépechan ruin), Tzintzuntzan (once capital of the Purépecha aka Tarascan civilization), Santa Fe de la Laguna (colourful pottery) and Tócuaro (traditional wooden masks) or head over away from the lake to visit Cuchajo (brightly painted wooden furniture) and Santa Clara del Cobre (copper). There is a nice view of the statue of Jose Maria Morelos (waving his arm as if to call a water taxi to get of of Janitzio) to be seen from the pyramid site at Ihuatzio and that is about the best way to see it IMHO.
