“Hard Beds”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2013

When traveling my main concerns are quietness, comfort and cleanliness. Whether the staff is friendly or not really doesn't matter to me as long as they perform their function. Staff at this hotel were easy to deal with and did what was asked of them. The hotel has a beautiful garden and swimming pool but the bathrooms were about a 2 on a scale of 1-5. The showers were made of a concrete floor with pebbles (you just want to use shower slippers. This hotel is rated at 4 stars but it should not be more than a two (maybe I just get grossed out easily). All five of us in our party had the same complaint though. Mattresses are about 5 inches thick and they rest on a concrete platform. The room air conditioners worked great. The hotel is walking distance (about 3 blocks) from the town plaza. I think next time I would stay in Tuxtla and drive the 7 km into Chiapa de Corzo.

Room Tip: We stayed on the lower level which seemed to be pretty nice. I noticed the upper levels had some ol...

We thought this place was much nicer than implied by the sentiments in other reviews. Remember, this is a small town without many foreign tourists. We came with 5 people, including two kids and got two connecting rooms for about $88/night for the pair. The grounds are actually quite nice and we found the staff helpful. The rooms are basic, but perfectly fine for a stay of a night or two. We didn't eat dinner in the restaurant, but breakfast there was fine. We recommend it for a short stay in Chiapa de Corzo.

A little dated, but the found the staff good to deal with though I spoke about as much Spanish as they did English. Didn't matter all went well. Room was fine - hot water, hard but comfortable beds, a TV and plenty of space and only a short walk to the square. Not a 4 star experience, but in more rural part of Mexico I found it to be a pleasant experience. I'd have no hesitation staying there again.

We stayed at La Ceiba for one night, to visit the Canon de Sumerido as most visitors of Chiapa de Corzo will do. When booking we looked at hotels in Tuxtla as well, but decided to book at La Cieba as it was closer to the Canon, and it was reasonably recommended here in Tripadvisor.

The hotel staff did not greet us when we came in, and even though my travelpartner speaks Spanish very well they did not respond to her in a friendly matter either. The staff seems to consist of the children of the family that runs the hotel, which does not always have to be a bad thing. But in La Ceiba's case it is; if you let your children run the hotel, please do teach them how to deal with guests.

The building and terrain looks great, but the rooms are not very clean and very outdated. We paid 52 USD for one night (triple room), excluding breakfast. Comparing this price with other hotels we stayed at during our trip this is quite expensive as well. Do not expect a 4-star hotel, it is more of a 2 star experience.

I would not recommend you eat at the restaurant of La Ceiba either, the dishes are not very well prepared or tasteful.

All in all we would not stay here again, book a hotel in Tuxtla if you want to visit the Canon, it is not that long of a taxi drive!

The Bathroom in the Restaurant was filthy, the food in the restaurant was terrible, lumpy caned soup passed as fresh, insipid chicken in a thin tomato based sauce....
If you are visiting the Cañon del Sumidero, stay in Tuxtla and take a taxi or a bus down, it is about 15 minutes.

Let's be honest...this is probably the best hotel in town, but in no way does it deserve its self-image as a "spa". The grounds are very nice, but the room was drab, worn and small, and the beds were hard. The staff were civil, but not only spoke no English, but made little effort to communicate, and seemed flummoxed by my request to make change for a 200 peso ($16.00) bill. Chiapa de Corzo itself is probably most kindly described as gritty, so this hotel is probably the best option in town, but don't expect too much.
Tip: It is true that the local restaurants close early. Plan to eat dinner by 6:00 or settle for a sidewalk tacqueria. Also, I am a traveller who usually finds interest even in modest locales, but there is truly little to see or do in this town other than see the canyon.

Chiapa de Corzo is about a 20 minute drive from the Tuxtla Gutierrez airport and is a much more attractive city than Tuxtla. We chose to stay our first night here on the way to San Cristobal de las Casas. Chiapa de Corzo has a small-town feel, and La Ceiba is an old-fashioned hotel built around a courtyard with a pool and beautiful plantings. Our plain and simple room had 2 beds and 3 windows that opened. We had the very good buffet breakfast in their second-floor restaurant. Perhaps because they have a restaurant they were unable to suggest any place to eat in the area, but we walked up to the plaza and diagonally across to find a row of hotdog/hamburger kiosks, and then exactly what we hoped to find – women selling their tamales with cabbage slaw and hot sauce. We sat at a little table on the sidewalk and were joined by quite a few families who were obviously regulars. I wish we could have returned to La Ceiba on our trip back to the airport, but we were locked into a reservation in Tuxtla Gutierrez.

Room Tip: The restaurant crew sets up around 6 AM and can be noisy, so you may want a room that is not close t...
