We spent the day there (second visit). Snorkeling very nice. Parasailing lots of fun. Clam shells provide welcomed shade at a reasonable price. Fun for all ages.

“Really enjoyed our day there!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2013

We stopped here on a cruise. I would recommend that when you exit the ship, you walk past the busy part of the beach and continue on the other side. It is much less crowded. I like a little more peace and quiet time on the beach. The bathrooms are very clean and easily accessible.
YOU MUST BRING WATER SHOES TO THIS ISLAND. You cannot get around the island with bare feet. There are rocks everywhere, even when you enter the water. The water is beautiful and there is a lot to see. You can rent snorkel gear or bring your own. Also there are no towels provided there so you must bring your own towel from the cruise ship. Also there is minimal shade on the island. If you get to the island early you may be lucky enough as we were to get a spot under a few trees for some shade. Otherwise you will need to rent a "shell" for $30 which is a curved canopy that covers over the top part of two lounge chairs. Bring lots of sunscreen you will need it. Also Rash Guard shirts work the best.

“A FIVE DAY CRUISE FOR $199 WITH AN OCEAN VIEW/ GREAT CAY”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013

Ont the NCL Sky whuch is one of the midsize ships with 2005 clients. It may be small but it has a big ship punch offering great food, service, shows, and clean upto date staterooms. However this is 2013 and no flatscreen tvs like her big sister The Epic which holds 4,400 clients. There is never a dull moment on this ship. The island stop was fantastic better than the Princess Key. There are activities for all or just hit one of the three beaches where you can be a vegetable, snorkle, swim, read or work on that tan. The night parties were great, drinks good. IF YOU WANT TO GET A GREAT PRICE GO TO VACATIONS TO GO, CALL X 7833 ASK FOR MIGUEL ,he can put you on the right ship at the right price.

“Pure Bliss”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2013

NCL Sky and Great Stirrup Cay is an overwhelmingly a blissful experience that I did not want to end. The five day cruise was my first. NCL SKY has a selection of restaurants including fine dining a la carte with silver service and a smile. There are standard buffet restaurants, which of course are more convenient. NCL SKY also has room service. Everywhere the food was excellent and the waiter service was exemplary. The onboard facilities were excellent. The gym was terrific and especially the fitness trainer who was polite and proficient. There is a library if you need a quiet area to read or write with power sockets for laptops. There is a theatre, a casino, a nightclub, a cinema and many activities to satisfy all pastimes. The housekeeping in our room (called a stateroom) was faultless and our cleaner created fun figurines using towels, which was delightful. A monkey figurine hanging from a hanger was so funny. I found the stateroom to have good sound proofing; some ambient noise can sometimes be heard, but nothing to disturb sleep. There are daily onboard newspapers advising of weather, activities, excursions etc.
Great Stirrup Cay is an island privately owned by NCL. Go early to beat the crowd and if you prefer a quiet spot, walk along the coast to one of two smaller beaches away from the first popular beach. The water is crystal clear, warm and using just swimming goggles I was able to see many variety of fish and a hungry sting ray eating fish. I spent the whole day on the beach and there is a lunch available, drinks and many aqua sports.
There are ample sun loungers available at Great Stirrup Cay and you can upgrade to a canopy or a fixed cabana.
The trips to Nassau and Freetown were great, however, Great Stirrup Cay is a dream that I will never forget.
I heartily recommend Norwegian Sky.

“Great beach:”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

My family took the NCL 3-day Bahamas Cruise the July 4th long weekend. NCL stopped at the Great Stirrup Cay on Saturday.

The ship anchored roughly about 1/2 a mile or so from the island, and we took a tender to the island. We entered the tender from Level 3 of the ship. The ride was about 10 minutes to the island.

On entering the island, we were greeted by 'proprietary' characters dressed as turtles and parrots. I say 'proprietary' because only the NCL photo officials were authorized to take pictures, and others were not allowed to take pictures of the characters. (And these pictures produce a premium margin to the cruise ship! - more on that on a separate review).

The beach was beautiful. We took a clamshell rental for a whopping $29.99 which was a bit expensive. The beach was very "rocky" - full of rocks. One could hardly take 2 steps in the water without stepping into one. A few older folks almost tipped over walking in the shallow waters. I wish NCL took the initiative to remove the rocks from the shallow part.

Lunch was served by NCL crew around 11:30. We were advised to go for lunch as soon as it started. It was a hot day and they had a large container with ice water, which was very refreshing. Lunch was buffet style and consisted of a couple of types of pizza (cheese and pepperoni) to cater to veg and non-veg travellers, burger patties and condiments, lots of fruits, ice creams, and desserts. There was a note that veggie and turkey burger patties were available on request. We ordered some veg burgers, which was promptly made for us. However, this was a long walk on the beach sand from the clam shell rental location.

There were other programs running in other parts of the island. The Hippo water slide was not operational when we were there.

After spending the afternoon on the beach, we left around 3 to the tender. It was a little crowded, which they explained as operating only 2 tenders instead of the usual 3 tenders. Before entering the tender, they had water sprayed at feet level helping to wash the sand from the feet. The sea was very choppy which made exiting the tender very tricky as the plank from the ship to the tender was moving whenever the tender was moving due to the waves.

Overall, we enjoyed the beach. I would have reviewed it as Excellent if the beach was not rocky.
