“Your own prison cell”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2014

Didnt expect much ending up here for work but seriously what a brutal place to stay for more than one or two nights...Lobby looked decent enough, climbed the old stairs that actually move if you step in the right spot then got on the top floor with wood panels and cinder block walls. Walked down the hall to my "non smoking" room that I probably could have gotten away with smoking in because you could smell 40 years of cigarettes stained into the walls. Luckily no bed bugs, pillow cases were stained with a nice yellow sweat spot in the middle and theres a gas line coming out of the floor (like you'd throw on a deck for hooking up a BBQ) my shower actually had hot water but some of my coworkers weren't as fortunate. There's also a door next to the bed leading to what I figured would be a balcony to outside. Well if you step out onto your balcony into the dark you realise there's no wind because you're actually standing over top an abandoned indoor pool room and if you're brave enough to pull out a flashlight you get a good view of an empty, moldy pool. So that being the case there's no actual windows into the room. As far as the cleaners go the only difference after they're done that I could find is that they made the bed (haven't actually put clean sheets on in the 12 days i've been here so far) they swap the pillows around, drop the chair at the desk to the shortest height and drop a nauseating amount of febreeze all over the room....and my stuff. The free wifi is about as good as dial up and the front desk staff pretty much could care less about anything even rolling their eyes when you ask for a new key to the room because 5/10 times the card scanner doesn't work. Don't bother with the bar either it's a total dive that doesn't have a kitchen (probably for the better) and their offsale charges about 17$ for a six pack of crappy beer. Across the hall from the washing machines there's a giant bubble in the wallpaper thats holding a solid gallon of water and the beer fridge in the room leaks mouldy water. I could go on... There's at least 5 or 6 other decent hotels in town spend a bit extra and go there

“Bed Bugs for the second time”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2014

We have work crews that have to stay out of town work. In August we had a case of bed bug bites all over one of our workers. over 150 bites! Terrible, Terrible! This employee has refused to stay here again. He had to throw out his gear as he was scared to take it home in case he infected his own house. By the way, his wife is a manager of a hotel in another city and said to get rid of the bag, clothes and all. About 2 weeks ago we had another crew go to Estevan to work and because of lack of hotel rooms in this city they ended up getting booked into this hotel again. Another case of bed bug bites another worker. We are done. We will not be booking here again. I, obviously, strongly recommend not staying here ever and hope you warn your friends and collegues of this big issue that has not been addressed in the past 6 months.

“Next time I will sleep in the car”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

I stayed in the derrick motor hotel in april a year back.. i hope it has aged in reverse since then because the room was last redecorated in the 1980s. When we got to our room our light fixture was a bare light-bulb, and the wall in the hallway had been vandalized. The bathroom in this non-smoking room had several, long cigarette burns all over the vanity, from where someone had apparently rested a cigarette and forgotten all about it or something. The air conditioner didn't work in our room we were told they were being repaired and theres nothing we can do other than open a window... So, we used cold wet facecloths, and the window open to stay reasonably comfortable. However, we were soon to discover that this was a horrible solution to the problem because the back window of our hotel room actually faces directly onto a busy industrial train yard!!! To top it all off, there was also an unusual number of small black flying beetles in Estevan that year which quickly joined us in our hotel room. After surviving the evening I woke up and in the middle of my morning shower I was painfully burned when the water decided to instantly change from 40%warm to 100%HOT while I was in the middle of washing my hair... I couldn't imagine a worse way to spend 98 dollars..

“Appropriate For Some Travelers”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

The "Derrick" is a well worn motor hotel with a bar and restaurant that is showing a lot of wear. It is affordable and convenient and popular as a hotel for the oil services industry.

It is not a first choice for families if other more family oriented choices are available. There are definitely cleaner and spiffier hotels. The room we had was a very standard American style hotel room with two beds. They do have rooms with one bed and a nice little sitting area.

It has a bar and off sale attached and is in some ways configured for the oil services industry personnel it tends to attract. With that being said, it can be a good choice for the business traveler.

It has a well worn hot tub and pool with peeling paint, that are nonetheless usable. The continental breakfast is quite adequate with cereal, hard boiled eggs, toast, yogurt and juice. Newspapers are in plentiful supply. Access to the hotel was easy, perhaps too easy, with keyless entry through the side and back doors.

“Good value”

Good hotel for price. Has been fixed up. Good staff and helpful for long stays. Very busy because of all the crews in town.
