“The Stuff of Dreams”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2007

There were four of us, three adults and one twelve year old girl (with long red hair and a fascination with Anne of Green Gables).
We rented cottage number five for three nights.
What we loved:
1.The location and setting are fantastic. Beautifully situated facing a lake on one side and the ocean on another with extensive and exceptionally well maintained grounds, this is a the place for a truly relaxing PEI experience.
2.The food was of very high quality and ample. It is included in the rate.
3.The service was well informed and polite.
4.The cottage was well laid out and nicely furnished. The decor was charming.
5. The beds were firm and comfortable.
6. The linens/towels were of good quality.
7. The bike rentals were well maintained and the person handling the rentals was very professional and knowledgeable.
8. The gift shop had very nice selection and was staffed by a lovely person.

What we didn't like:
Frankly there wasn't much we didn't like. The only problems we noted at all were an inconsistency in leaving bath amenities and one with ordering meals. The meal included in the rate is an appetizer, a main and dessert. The servers suggested for those not interested in a particular course that one order two of another. We tried this three times, ordering two apps and no dessert and every single time they got it wrong.

It is expensive, but in my view it was well worth the cost. We loved Dalvay by the Sea!

When planning our trip to PEI, we were originally thinking of only eating at Dalvay ... happenstance led us to spend a night, and what brilliant luck that was. This property was one of the highlights of the trip.

The service at Dalvay was exceptional. Every member of staff, from the manager to the grounds staff to the woman tending the bar, were friendly, helpful and passionate.

Some of the modern amenities (air conditioning, cable television) are not available, though there is internet available. The lack of a television was actually appreciated. Rather than retreat to a room and veg in front of the tube, guests were mingling and conversing on the patio, the library and in front of the beautiful fireplace in the lobby.

The hotel offers canoes and kyacks for enjoying the lake. Across the way is a beautiful beach and the ocean. Croquet and lawn bowling. Large muskoka chairs dot the lawn and patio with service from the bar available. What better way to unwind than the ocean in the distance, a book in one hand and a martini in the other.

Definitely recommend Dalvay to all and would definitely return.

  • Liked — I'd say, overall, the best service we received on PEI.

We stopped here for lunch, fell in love with the place, and ended up staying the night! We wished we could have stayed longer. It is a beautiful place, the food was excellent, and the service was exceptional.

My husband and I just got back from our vacation that included 4 nights at Dalvay. What a place!

It reminded me (inside) of Gone with the Wind movies. The huge fireplaces, oversized staircases, beautiful surroundings. What really impressed us was the service and the food! OH MY!! The food presentation was almost as good as the taste of it. And the staff really has it down to a fine art. So friendly yet professional.

The grounds at Dalvay are beautiful and very well kept. The first day we were there I don't think I even moved from the adirondack chairs overlooking the water. It's a retreat into itself. No tv's, no phones, no disturbances.

We got to peek into some of the rooms. Each one is different. We stayed in room 13 (didn't think they even had 13 anymore but they did). It was very large on the third floor. Don't be panicked by the amount of stairs. They take your heavy bags up and bring them back for you and it was very quiet up there. Our bathroom was rather small, but if that's the worst I can say about the place then I'll take it!

If you're looking for a lively place with tons to do, this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for a wonderful retreat to rest, relax and rejuvenate then you HAVE to go to Dalvay. Just be prepared to gain 5 lb. on your visit! So worth it though.

My husband and I stayed a week at the hotel. It’s a got wonderful, friendly, personal service. The rooms are charming, well kept up and they are perfectly quiet. Our room had a view of the little lake as well as the beach. It’s a gorgeous, beach, uncrowded to the point of emptiness. The dinner was brilliant every night—local ingredients, creative cuisine, lovely wine list. We looked forward to a relaxing hour of drinks on the lawn before dinner, and lovely walks on the beach after dinner. Lots of families come back every year and the whole place had a great family feel. Highly recommend.

We stopped in for lunch at Dalvay by the Sea because it was recommended, and because we were tired of all the bad meals we'd had on PEI up to that point. We thought we'd go all-out and splurge for lunch rather than dinner there (lunch menus are usually priced more reasonably).
The meal we had was exquisite, the best we experienced in our whole entire stay of 1 week on the island.
The waitstaff was friendly, helpful and professional. We ordered fish and it was cooked to perfection, with in-season vegetables artfully arranged on the plate. We had cappucchinos and dessert afterwards that were equally delicious, and we were happily surprised when we received the check - a fabulous meal at a fair price.
The hotel and restaurant are in a lovely setting, right by the water - highly recommend.

We went to the hotel to try their lunch menu, which had been highly recommended. We were not disappointed. The meal and service was excellent. The dining room was beautiful and so were the grounds and gardens. If we have more time next time, I think we would actually stay at the hotel.
