I stayed at the Howard Johnson in Cornwall, PEI for three nights on business in July. I was originally booked at the Super 8 where I stayed the last time a few weeks earlier, and was very satisfied with this hotel but, upon checking, there was about an $80 difference between the two (overall) so I decided to try the Howard Johnson instead.
The staff at the Howard Johnson were very nice, and the hotel was very basic, but clean, however, I have to say that I preferred the Super 8. The room I had at the Super 8 was a bit more upscale and, in my opinion, the staff were a bit more professional in how I was managed. That's not to say that the staff at the Howard Johnson were incompetent but they were a little less attentive. It could also be that I happened upon the front desk at the wrong time... for example dinner time when the poor lady at the front desk was trying to eat her dinner, answer phones and handle reactivating my room key card at the same time.
As for the room, I reread the reviews and wonder if all of the hotel was updated or just a portion of it since my room didn't appear updated, except perhaps for the bathroom. My room also had paper thin walls since I could hear the poor lady coughing all night long next to me which didn't make for a very restful sleep.
I didn't try the pool so cannot comment on that. The breakfast was fine enough, with scrambled eggs, sausages, toast, etc. so I didn't really have a preference between the Super 8 and the Howard Johnson on that end of things.
Was it worth the $80 difference? In the grand scheme of things, I guess that's a personal decision to make!
