“Our last stay at this venerable hotel - it's gone so far downhill”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2012

We have been staying at the Sherwood Inn for decades now, long before it was taken over by Clublink and Delta - in those days, the resort was elegant and top notch, with only the best in accomodations, food and service. Sadly, we have witnessed an annual degradation in the standard of the hotel to the point where we have decided that this was our last stay..

We stayed in the Maplewood building which is the "newer" part of the resort. Our room, 533 might have once had a lovely lake view, but that is pretty much obscured by trees now. The deck furniture consisted of one plastic chair and one lounger - not conducive to enjoying the view in any case. The air conditioning unit which is out on the deck was rusting, with the cover half falling off, not an attractive addition. Our room featured a broken floor lamp (when we complained about it, the action taken was to remove it which left us with very poor lighting in the room), white patch marks on the taupe walls, leftover picture hooks with nothing hanging on them, a hairdryer that did not work properly and a small table which was scratched and gouged. The hairdryer in our friends' room had also broken and been removed. However, the plate from which it used to hang was left behind on the bathroom wall.

We had booked for dinner at the resort restaurant. When we arrived, the room was approximately one quarter full. We were advised on the way to our table that because of a large group (of seven) there would not be enough menus available for the four of us and we would have to share. We were offered a smoked salmon amuse bouche which for three of us was served on a white ceramic Chinese spoon. The fourth person got hers on a ridiculous teaspoon because they were out of ceramic spoons, again because of the large group. The others enjoyed their main courses - I had the rack of lamb and felt that it was only marginal with heavy handed sauces and a mushroom risotto that tasted only of garlic - highly overpriced at $42. At breakfast the next morning, two of our group ordered the pancakes which they said were quite good. They would have been even better if the syrup and buter had arrived at the same time, not ten minutes later. Our server advised us only as the meals were being brought that the peameal that one person had ordered was not available that morning.

The upholstery on the dining room chairs is stained and is crying out for replacement. The people at the table next to us refused to sit in theirs and asked for them to be switched out. Throughout, this resort creates the impression of being tired and in dire need of a major infusion of capital to bring it up to an acceptable standard.

We are Clublink members and therefore benefitted from a 50% reduction in the room rate. We still paid $200 a night to stay in this very disappointing resort. I cannot imagine what anyone paying twice that amount would think. I had charged my dinner to my Clublink account - when I got home and checked my account, I found that the hotel had doubled the amount of the already generous gratuity which I had written in!

Dear Guest,
Thank you for your comments and constructive feedback following your August stay with us at our resort.
Seems like your stay was filled with a comedy of errors.
Certainly having not enough menues is inexusable and I was saddened to read that we did not have enough Chinese spoons to complete your tables complimentary Amuse Bouche.

In reading your TripAdvisor profile it is evident that you travel extensively and know what your expectations are, and we certainly dropped the ball during your visit and as you can see from reading many of the other comments from our visitors it is not indicative of the level of service that we wish to provide to you our guests.

We value your business and feedback as well as your ClubLink membership and will be contacting you directly through member services to offer amends to your negative experience.

We do hope that you will extend us an opportunity to redeem ourselves to show you the true Sherwood Inn Hospitality that we are known for.

Best Regards

Just came back from a lovely weekend at the Sherwood Inn. The views from the beachfront and front the back patio deck are breathtaking. Beautiful beach for Muskoka. The cottages are nice and the rooms in the inn are newly renovated. The suites in the other building are nice and big but could use a little renovations in the bathroom (although you are at the cottage so it is rustic). The beds were especially comfortable. Food in the restaurant was very good and the staff were very helpful. Take a run into the quaint little town of Port Carling for a walk, shopping or a drink at Turtle Jack's on the water.

Dear Guest,

I was pleased to read about your positive stay with us at the resort, the friedliness of the staff and the views that you enjoyed from the deck, beach and waterfront as well as the quality of the food.
The Inn rooms indeed are our newest rooms following the fire we and rebuild of the Inn since September 2009.
Some of our other rooms albeit dated still offer modern amenities and will receive some upgrades in the off season after Mid October.
Thank you for your great feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back to Muskoka in the near future.

Best Regards

We needed a special place to take our 80+ friend for her birthday on August 23 and decided to try Sherwood Inn which we had not visited in many years. What a fabulous experience we had beginning with the pleasant helpful man when we drove in and tried to figure out how to get our semi-ambulatory friend as near as possible to the front entrance. We had a delicious lunch al fresco and could not have asked for better table service. We had mentioned to the hostess that this was a special birthday occasion and were quite thrilled when,at the end of our meal the chef appeared with a small birthday cake complete with candle! Thank you for a special experience and we will most definitely return for other special days. C.Burns Gravenhurst

Dear Guests,

It was a pleasure to read your comments following your birthday luncheon for your special guest celebrating their 80+ birthday.
It was great to meet you on the parking lot and I am glad to hear that giving you directions to make the trip from our entrance circle to the back deck was helpful.
Our team is truly magic and I am pleased to see that the chef was able to visit you at the table and add some special personal touches to your dining experience.
Thank you for your feedback and Business.

We have stayed at Sherwood numerous times, no longer a Delta but service standards still high. The food was good and made better by the staff, especially Jeff. You can't beat the location for a true Muskoka experience. Rooms were clean. Unlike Taboo and the Marroitt, not corporate.

My sister and I just spent that past weekend at Sherwood Inn to celebrate our birthdays (yes, we are twins).

The lounge and dining room both offerred and served delicious meals and we had the pleasure of being taken care of by 2 fine young gentlemen servers (Sam and Nicholas).
All staff from check-in to check-out (Keegan) were professional and friendly.

However, the room (Maplewoods) was outdated and in dire need of renovating. The balcony did face the lake but we could hardly see it for mature trees blocking our view. Also, stepping onto the balcony, it felt like it was not entirely stable as there was a "give" to it. Definitely not what we expected for $300+ per night.

Our biggest disappointment was with the AMBA Spa!! We'd looked forward to some nice pampering in the "oasis" as per their website. Far from it. The rooms and towels were not clean, the staff seemed disorganized (3 different people to start and finish a manicure?), the hot tub was out of order, a facial where the person left the room 3 times during the treatment and on.

We'll not go back....live and learn.

Dear Guest
Thank you for your positive feedback as well as your constructive Criticism during your stay with us this July.

I was pleased to read about your postive comments about your dining experiences in the dining room and our lounge and the service provided by Nick, Sam and Keegan.

I was disapponted however, to learn about your negative experience at the Amba Spa.
I have spoken to the spa director in person and measures have been taken to make improvements in theoverall delivery of service as well as clenliness of the facility.
The hot tub belongs to the resort and based on the hot summer temperatures we made a consicous decisision to close it during the summer months, but endeavor to open it up again in late fall.
We are also building a wall separating the hot tub area from the spa area to offer better privacy for both operations.
The Maplewood building has had a lot of renovations in carpeting in the common areas. The decks you can rest assured are sound but the decking sits on top of a rubber mebrane that does have some give under foot traffic.
You are absolutely right about the blocked view of the lake from the balcony and we will be addressing this with our arborist this fall once we get a few slower days when the buzz of chainsaws will not disturn too many guests.

We value your business and and feedback and hope that you will give us another chance to redeem ourselves with the type of hospitality experience that we are known for.

Best Regards

Our trip to Sherwood Inn was the perfect weekend away. The staff was incredibly attentive and the service and food were exceptional. Sherwood Inn provided us with some well needed R and R.
The beach and waterfront activities were certainly well received on a hot summer weekend.

We attended a wedding in June and really enjoyed our weekend. The location is great and the rooms along the waterfront looked like they were recently updated. While we didn't swim, the beach looked inviting and we appreciated the use of the canoes for a paddle on the lake. The inn staff were very friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. A great traditional Muskoka-style stay!

Dear ConnieEB,

Thank you for your comments following your June weekend stay at our resort.

I was pleased to read that you enjoyed your stay during the wedding weekend, that your renovated room met your expectations and that our friendly staff was able to make an emotional connection with you during your stay.

It was nice to see that you had an opportunity to use some of the canoes and Kayaks for a paddle and we hope that you will have an opportunity to return to Muskoka soon , so you will be able to enjoy that swim off our beach in the pristine waters of Lake Joseph, that you missed on this occasion.
Thank you for your feedback, we truly appreciate it.
