We found ourselves stranded in Gore Bay by mechanical failure late on a Sunday afternoon.
The six B&B's in town were all full, we looked across the bay at a nice log main lodge with motel style outbuildings and asked the locals "what about there " .... muttered responses which we did not pick up on so we called and yes they would take us for $195 a night. No mention on the $44 gratuity which appeared on our invoice also. I will save space by saying DITTO to all the other reviews about the RUDE neurotic front desk person who is also an owner.
The whole place is old and bare. No garden/ flowers, play areas, lawn furniture, boats, diving dock NOTHING that you would expect from a lake front lodge. Also no access to the dining room only the little bar which blazed with the setting sun and no window shades.
While the lodge has at least 30 units and only 6 appeared to be occupied , we were only offered the lake front $195 accommodation. I asked what else was available as we planned to leave first thing in the morning ... the $195 unit.
Prior to actually accepting the room, the owner/desk clerk told me she knew of a mobile mechanic ! great news so I asked her to call. In front of me she called and repeatedly referred to the mobile mechanic. While I stood 2 feet from her , she told the person on the other end of the phone that they did not need to come tonight , that we would be staying at the lodge and they could come in the morning :-( So we stayed.
The room was on the ground floor, a very basic motel style unit which smelled of mold and acetone. The furniture was vintage 1960's, there was no air conditioning and due to the layout of the room , no cross ventilation from the lake breeze was possible (blocked by the location of the closet and washroom) and not even a fan. Or a clock radio. which would have been nice as I could not sleep in that room and laid quietly in the bed waiting for it to be time to get up and leave.
Dry brittle soap and two tiny shampoo packets .... thin towels and not many of them. No beach towels.
At 8am the phone rang and we were told that the mechanic was here :-) This nice man turned out to be the local handy man and could not even get our car to start with battery cables.
I am sure he would be great with a plunger or to fix a window but mechanics .... no.
Off he went with my travel mate to fetch the real mechanic who had the car boosted in minutes.
While they were gone I told the desk clerk/owner of the mix up about mobile handyman vs. mechanic and it was like a scene out of Psycho. She turned on me.
Eyes narrowed and glinting she snarled at me that she had NEVER told me he was a mechanic, "that's how we do things on the island" "you would have never found a mechanic without him" and then she started for the door and angrily said she would tell him to leave.
WOW I just wanted out of there. I retreated to the room to wait and read trip adviser while I waited.
Breakfast was included but the time was not posted. We were given a menu, it was mute on meals times. Due to car repair arrangements we tried to have breakfast at 10. The door was locked and we were told breakfast was from 7 to 9 but it could be delivered to our room. We ordered and waited. Thirty minutes later it arrived; cold , the wrong order, only one set of cutlery. Back we went to be told , abruptly , that this is what the chef had cooked for us. No apology or offer to correct the mistake. Great service for $44 in gratuity.
All in all a horrible experience. Never stay at Gordon's Lodge.
The silver lining ?
we meant some wonderful helpful people who live in Gore Bay , found Twin Bluffs and Cafe on the Bay both lovely places to eat, stayed at a spotlessly clean modern fully equipped apartment in the McLaughlin Block for only $100.
