“City menu in a country setting!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014 via mobile

We went for my husband's birthday and we had a great night! Our server was so knowledgeable and she helped make our visit so worth it. I had the pork tenderloin and it was so big I couldn't eat it all! I don't usually eat pork but it looked so good I couldn't resist not having it! My husband had the steak and he really enjoyed it as well! We will for sure be going back..I particularly would like to try the tea luncheon on sunday!

“Great Lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2014

With friends for lunch. Lovely atmosphere, and very good service. We were served promptly, and the lunch special (Trout that day) was delicious. I look forward to returning.

“a fabulous experience a PSH!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

From the moment you walk in the door and experience the warmth a classy felling of this restaurant, to the down to earth, friendly owners who are at your beck and call, this restaurant with all of it's bountiful offerings was an experience I am only to happy to repeat!
Genuine people make for a wonderful dining experience. It sure beats some of the other uppity places that make you feel uncomfortable.
The food was amazing, the portions more than generous!
Overall, a truly lovely experience.
And the decor, the retail section - to die for!!!
There is something for everyone at this establishment, whether it be excellent food or excellent
product to purchase - Bella of Ancaster is it!

“Poor effort”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2014

We visited Bella of Ancaster with friends and from the beginning things seemed headed for a not so fun experience.

We were seated after waiting close to an hour past our reservation time. We understand that during busy times, delays are sometimes realities but during our wait for our table, there were no offers to bring us anything to tide us over or the like.

Once we were finally seated, the service started rather quickly which was a nice surprise, but between ordering our dinners and the arrival of each course, there was a considerable time frame. When all was said and done, our meal was finished at close to three and a half hours.

Now in fine dining it is understandable to spend a considerable amount of time enjoying the atmosphere and ambience of the establishment but when the cuisine, marketed as fine dining, meets the mediocre stage, three plus hours is far too long to spend in such a place.

Aside from the long wait time for our table (and ultimately each course), the banality of the food, the service was commendable but fell flat. In fact, the staff, as pleasant as they were, all seemed to be in over their heads during this busy period. Plenty of apologies but nothing more. Not that were expecting anything but all in all, perhaps a complimentary appetiser was in order, especially considering the prices they are charging. But it didn't happen.

Our first visit to Bella of Ancaster will be our last.

“What a disappointment.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2014

Our first visit to the Shaver House/Bella of Ancaster did not live up to the hype to say the least. There are new owners, who are very nice and want to please you, but right from the start we could tell they may be in over their heads.

To start….the service (something that has been mentioned in other reviews) is painfully slow. It took 10 minutes for a simple dollop of butter to arrive when requested. For us to make it through a salad, soup, main and dessert it took just over three hours. The time between courses just didn't make any sense.

And here lies the root cause of the problem.

The art of service is in fact an art, it takes training and pride…and a good server who has this training and professionalism can make a very healthy living for themselves and treat you to a wonderful experience (which is what we pay for, I don't care how nicely decorated a place is, I'm paying for the pride in the food and service). Sadly, we saw no evidence of that fine dining service knowledge. We would strongly recommend that the new owners invest in a 'fine dining mentor' for their staff…if you're going to charge what you are charging, then invest in your staff, give them the tools to excel in their positions. They work very hard but they do not know what they do not know. It will make all the difference in the world for them and your business.

As for the food…it was average. Certainly not worth the premium prices they are charging. This is also something you will see mentioned in other reviews. It's not bad food, but when you are paying such prices you expect to experience that wow factor that comes along with the pageantry of fine dining.

All in all the evening passed by without any ghastly events… the owners and staff were pleasant and the food was fine…but when you go to a place that charges fine dining prices and you leave with that average feeling towards the food and service the same way you would walk out of any Swiss Chalet - then there is something desperately wrong.
