“"killler" weekend!”

Oak Island Resort & Spa

We had a "killer" time at Oak Islands Murder on the Shore weekend. Our room was large and bright, and very comfortable. We booked oceanview, and enjoyed it, however there is construction going on right in the view line. We took part in the packaged deal, which we thought was very reasonable, our rooms, 2 breakfasts and a dinner buffet were included,as well as, the murder mystery, entertainment and dance. The food was very good, high quality, plentiful and hot. We ate in the dining room our first night and enjoyed our meals, our server was great. Spa services were also available, I used the Hair salon, the stylist did a good job, very friendly, and great price. The best part of our stay was the Murder mystery, it was what we wanted to try, hense the reason for the trip. We had a great time, enjoyed the performers and the company of others that were there for the same thing. We were surprised at the different age groups. We are in our early 30's, but there were ages from 18 to 60+, everyone had a good time, it was VERY funny. My only complaint would be that it really took more of our time then we bargained for. We thought there would be a bit more free time, and we felt that we did not have that. As well, we did not know ahead of time that there would be a dress up theme, or audience "show", this made us feel uncomfortabe. We were happy to have something to do however since the weather was terrible the whole weekend. We did not have time to use the other facilities at the resort. I would say a little more communication ahead of time to the people booking would solve this problem. All the staff that we talked to were great, and very helpful. We will go back for sure.

My husband and I stay at this resort every summer because my family have boats in the Oak Island Marina and this allows us to be in close proximity to them. Every year this resort and the service gets better, although the dining room is still hit and miss. This year we were given an excellent rate and we were told that we could have the choice of several rooms. We looked at the first room and then went back to the desk and requested another room. It was no problem. Here is the facts about the rooms. There is an older section with balconies and a newer section without balconies. The newer section overlooking the water is the best choice. The rooms are huge and what you give up for a balcony you get in clean, large, modern facilities. There are Muskoka chairs all over the resort so you do not need a balcony. The lounge area is tastefully decorated with beautiful leather furniture. The outside pool is clean. The view from the property is breathtaking when there is no fog. (Remember you are looking at bays that lead directly to the ocean.) Now if they could only get a consistent dining room I would be ready to give this resort a five. I would highly recommend this resort. Best times to visit for weather is August. Enjoy!

“Great location for the kids”

Oak Island Resort & Spa

I took my children - 7 and 2 1/2 - and they enjoyed themselves tremendously. On-site playground, indoor pool for rainy days, spacious rooms and lots of common spaces to roam. Most of the top tourist activities are located within 30 - 45 minutes. Children's menu is a good value.

Excellent view, clean facilities and most of the staff members went out of their way to ensure a great experience. Especially nice were Cortney in breakfast dining and Pam in the lounge.

I didn't get a chance to use the spa services, and did not hear another guest comment on them.

One bad note - Pam's evening off in the lounge resulted in particularly poor service.

As a local who frequents this Inn 3 to 5 times per week in all seasons I feel I can give a fair unbiased review of this accomodation. I have for years suggested this resort to friends from away who are visiting the area and use the many immenities and features myself consistently.

The restaurant has always been a place I would never recommend. The dining room and deck are lovely but the food was never consistent nor very good. Chef changes took it's toll on this Inn's food for sometime but recently I have dined there three times and most recently with a group of 15 and we were all very impressed with the food, service and especially the presentation. A new chef is in place ( formerly chef at Arbour View in Lunenburg) and things have improved nicely. As of May 29th - 07 the menu's have been changed and more tasty editions have been added. The service is by no means professional as most employed there are locals and school kids and the prices are high but if you choose carefully you will enjoy a nice meal in a relaxed semi formal atmosphere.

Rooms"
I have always found the standard rooms to be a tad small almost closterphobic. A deluxe room or junoir suite is almost a must here in my opinion and do be sure you are getting a water view and not one of the parking lot.

Outdoor pool"
Very nice, very warm but shallow. Lots of chairs and loungers and a beautiful view.

Indoor Pool "
As the previous poster mentioned, sometimes extremely cold and uncomfortable. Have noticed a big improvement lately though. Large tropical plants have been added to the deck area which is nice. Sliding door to an outside deck for sunbathing or relaxing in the sun. Totally enclosed by glass and views exceptional. Hot tub is nice but does not always work properly.
Sauna -- very nice and works well, steam room has been eliminated unfortunately and will not be replaced I hear.
Small enclosed pool area for the kids as well
Lockers and shower rooms clean but could use more mesh on the floors for possible slipping on wet floors.

Gym / Fitness Center"
Clean, efficient and glass enclosed, beautiful views of the Mahone Islands.

Spa"
Cannot personally comment as don't use this facility but friends who have have been pleased and I don't hear anything negative regarding this.

Chalets"
Large lovely and the best accomodation they offer

Fireplace Bar"
Grand piano and comfy chairs again mostly enclosed by glass with beautiful views of the water and islands. Also a larger bar area close to the fireplace with couches and large furniture.

This resort has undergone some much needed updating throughout the winter months this year. Rooms have received new furniture and carperting as well as the lobby and bar area's.
Nice marina is enclosed as well and nice hiking trails to enjoy.
Tours of all kinds are available and arranged at the front desk where staff are accomodating and friendly on the most part.
If you know exactly what this place is and isn't you should enjoy a nice stay at Oak Island Inn and Resort.

“Expected a bit more”

Oak Island Resort & Spa

Visited with family who were here from Alberta. Had the winter getaway deal - good value for the money. Food was very good, although a reduced menu for the package deal. Rooms need an upgrade but were comfortable. Had adjoining rooms with my sister and family facing the water, made visiting easier with a nine year old in tow. Too bad the whirlpool wasn't operational and the pool was too cold. Probably won't visit here again - more of Nova Scotia to see other than the south shore.
