“"Read This" Nice place but with problems”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2007

Arriving at 7:15pm we were amazed that no one was available to check us in. We had not eaten lunch that day in anticipitation of a gourmet meal. We made reservation for dinner when we booked the room three weeks earlier. The kitchen was locked up tight. No chef!! We ate at the local pizza joint.(NOT BAD) No ice was available.
The room was nicely appointed. The shower was poor, a cheap shower head. Breakfast involved one choice. The friut in the bowel in the hall was rotting. No salt/pepper on the table. Had to get our own coffee. The Inn keeper had disappeared. No WiFi or internet. We voiced our concerns about the problems, management blamed it on her lack of help.
Nice bed but very overpriced for region and being shoulder season.

DesBarres Manor prides itself in genuine maritime hospitality and was
sincerely apologetic for misplacing the dinner reservation for these guests.
Unfortunately, our guests did not bring the reservation to our attention
until the next day. Had we been informed of this oversight when they checked
in, our Chef most definitely would have returned to the Inn to prepare a
fabulous dinner. DesBarres Manor uses environmental shower heads. We offer a
chef's feature at breakfast and welcome individual requests. Our fruit bowl
is checked daily. Guests are invited to phone the innkeeper's cell 24/7 with
any requests when we are not present (I live two blocks away). We do have
high speed WiFi.

We arrived on a cloudy day in Guysborough, a very picturesque little fishing village whose industries have mostly faded away leaving only tourism (and a micro-brewery) as the only economic game in town. This is a well-kept place, with numerous 19th century homes (each with date and original owner plaque) and littered with 19th century churches of every conceivable denomination.

The DesBarres in sits one street above the "water" street and is a handsome converted house once belonging to a family of plutocrats and statesmen. Bill was on duty when we checked in and upgraded us to the "honeymoon suite" - OK, we had the baby with us, but it wasn't as though the room was filled with hearts, velour, black lights and hot tubs or other "honeymoon" paraphernalia. Actually, the room (and others I peeked into) was large, very tastefully furnished, had a nice bathroom, good cross ventilation and a wonderful view out the back down the rolling hills. No AC but we didn't need it. A nice decorative fireplace, too. We were very happy with this room.

Bill could not have been more helpful. He dragged the big red monster duffle up the stairs to the room; arranged a babysitter to cover us for dinner; did our laundry (no charge); gave us advice; procured ice and wine glasses; made cocktails; served dinner and was a very helpful one man band in all respects. And he was new at the job! I hope they keep Bill stays on because he is the best.

Dinner at the DesBarres is gourmet. It is a relatively small dining room, so reservation times and menu selections are somewhat limited, but each of the courses was uniformly excellent. The wine list was the most extensive we saw in Nova Scotia and not vastly overpriced. All of this will cost you a pretty penny, so be prepared. Breakfast was also wonderful.

The DesBarres is exactly what we think a country Inn should be and our two days there were thoroughly enjoyable.

DesBarres Manor is beautiful. The rooms are tastefully done and have a number of luxurious touches. I would have rated the inn a 5, if it weren't for the following serious glitch:

When we arrived, we tried to make a reservation for dinner but were told that their restaurant was full. No one had informed me when I booked the room months earlier that this might be a problem. There are no comparable alternatives in town. Instead, the inn recommended a pub, the Rare Bird, which it also owns. Since we'd driven such a long way, we didn't feel like getting in the car again, so we walked to the pub for dinner. Let's just say it's a casual, loud, pretty sub-par place, especially when we had been looking forward to something much, much better.

I don't understand inns that trumpet their restaurants as part of the experience of staying with them, then turn away their own guests! At the very least, they should have recommended that we book dinner at the same time we booked the room. Or made sure that they had enough tables to accommodate all of their guests, especially since there are no other good restaurants close by.

After a long driving tour from north Cape Breton, this was a wonderful find.

The staff were very welcoming and offered us tea & banana bread immediately on arriving; we took them up on this after we had got over how fantastic our room (the Wolfe room) was. After unwinding in the lounge with tea and books, we had the most excellent dinner, the chef is fantastic and nothing is too much trouble - a vegetarian choice was made especially for me. The wine was also fantastic, and we had the best night's sleep in ages; comfy beds and lots of peace and quiet!

Breakfast the next day was also very substantial, yoghurts, fruits and cereals followed by the day's cooked option - in our case fluffy light waffles and strawberries. You really don't need much more to keep you going through the day.

I would definitely recommend this hotel and would love to go again next time we're in Novia Scotia.

We stayed for one night at the gorgeous DesBarres Manor Inn in Guysborough, Nova Scotia. The inn is a restored nineteenth century house with huge grounds a couple of very short blocks from the harbour on Chedabucto Bay. The place is amazing - gorgeous restoration, antique furniture in every room, 600 thread count sheets on the beds, and an in house chef if you would like to reserve supper. It is a class act all the way. The bathroom was amazing, with a super deep tub I could nearly swim in, every possible travelers emergency need set out ( Q-tips ! Thank you ! ), and thick terry robes to slip into after your bath. A plus !

  • Liked — Everything. The price was EXTREMELY reasonable too.
  • Disliked — Breakfst was a little skimpy and no chouce offered, but it was delicious ( omelette ).
  • Tips/Secrets — It's a long drive up the Eastern Shore, but Guysborough is wonderful and the Inn is just one of the lovely attractions. Well worth the drive !

Spent a wonderful overnight at DesBarre Manor in Guysborough, Nova
Scotia. The Inn is flawlessly restored, beautiful, quiet and comfortable, with personal service from attentive staff. I felt like I'd spent a weekend at a friend's Country house!
My aim is to see it in two more seasons within the next year!

Our stay at DesBarres Manor, was one of our most outstanding weekend get aways ever. Every aspect of our stay in Guysborough was overwhelmingly relaxing.
The staff at the manor were most accommdating and very knowledgable not only about the manor itself but surrounding areas as well. I have only the best of compliments to the chef, and would highly recommend the "Halibut with the cranberry butter", and be sure to let the staff marry the wine with your meal. The Rare Bird pub was equally as breath taking. The patio view of the ocean is outstanding, and be sure to ask for their own specially brewed beer!! The Skipping Stone art gallery and gift store, which is just a skip away from the pub has a wonderful selection of quality gifts.
