Like a lot of restaurants on the water in Nova Scotia, I have a tendency to look around and do an extreme makeover in my head. If they did this, this, this and this, gosh this place would be world class. But alas it is not. The location is wonderful, the deck on a warm day in the summer in a nice spot to relax, have a beer and watch the world sail by. The pub-like atmosphere inside is wonderful on a chilly fall day to enjoy a warm bowl of something.
For some reason though, when I started going here 4 years ago the food and service used to be much better. Now, not so much. Like another poster said - do not go here if you are in a hurry. Period. The service here is slow, to the point of exasperating during my last two visits this month - one entertaining a visitor from Australia and one last weekend with friends from Toronto. They might as well get a construction worker with a "Slow" sign outside the front door.
As for the food, it has gone downhill. I had mussels and coconut shrimp with the Australian. The mussels were probably the worst mussels I have ever had. This is the East Coast! We can do better. Tiny little things in very little sauce that wasn't provided with any bread, no need though as I had no desire to soak up the boring cold sauce. The shrimp were okay. With the Torontonians I had a Caesar salad that was, I don't know how to put it, I want to say greasy. The burger was uninspired, overcooked and cold.
I think it is the atmosphere that keeps people coming back. Maybe go for a drink on the deck. But if you want a good meal and you only have one opportunity to do so, go for the restaurants listed in the top two for the Chester category.
