“A Gem in the Valley”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2013

It begins with a tree-lined lane way reminiscent of a historic novel. The rooms, clean and cosy, are only surpassed by the food. Hidden in the Margaree Valley is a gastronomical delight. And after having you taste buds tickled, the owners provide local live entertainment nightly. Travellers come together to tap toes and sing favorite songs in an ambiance of home and hearth.

Room Tip: If you are upstairs you will hear less of those above you.

We thankfully only stayed the one night here. Had it not been so late and had we not booked in advance we wouldn't have hung around. It is in the beautiful Margaree Valley, but this was not a beautiful stay. We stayed in an old cabin - we were greeted by a tube of pest killer on the cabin steps, the cabin was musty, damp, lights didn't work, bed lumpy, dirty floor. Furniture looked as though it had been liberated from a dump - holes in the settee covering, chairs wonky. When collecting our key another guest was asking for a change of cabin as she wasn't happy, the receptionist said they were fully booked, no changes could be made - goodness knows how they are fully booked??? Presumably not repeat bookings. We were in Nova Scotia and PEI for three weeks and this was the booby prize of a reservation. We have stayed in marvellous and reasonably priced places - not this one. Further on during our trip a Canadian couple actually apologised to us that we were unfortunate enough to end up here as they'd previously stayed at Normaway and said it wasn't to be repeated. We second that!! Didn't eat in the restaurant on the basis that the cabin was so bad goodness knows what the restaurant would be like!

My wife and I stayed here two nights, as one stop among five that were scattered around the island over the span of a couple of weeks in July 2013. We had driven through the Margaree Valley area on a previous trip, and wanted to spend a little time seeing it up close. The Normaway is located on a large property just north of the Cabot Trail. We stayed in Suite 18, in a free-standing structure a quarter-mile from the main lodge, a center unit with smaller units on either side. These are older buildings, but very well maintained and nicely furnished; ours had satellite TV, a sitting room, and two bedrooms. The smaller bedroom, which we did not use, did not have its own AC, and AC was necessary in July; it would have been serviced by the unit in the sitting room if the door were left open. The master BR had its own window unit and an overhead fan. The lodge is a rambling, comfortable structure with a dining wing. The restaurant is good -- limited choices, but the food was well-prepared, and wine is available. I would guess that this is the top room in the local area, and it also served excellent breakfasts. There was nightly music in the upstairs sitting room in the lodge, one time we heard a talented young local fiddler and the other night an older and well-known fiddler; with an audience of 8-12 or so, it was possible to speak with them afterwards. The Normaway is well-positioned to explore the immediate region, and (surprisingly) the nearby salmon fishing museum is worth a stop, and so is Cape Breton Clay (selling locally-made pottery). The Dancing Goat is nearby on the Cabot Trail, serving great sandwiches. The Normaway is not the Ritz, nor does it try to be - it's comfortable, staffed by helpful and friendly people, and we do recommend it.

We stayed in the McPherson house, #19. It wasn't very clean, the deck chairs were broken and dirty. The foldout bed smelled mildewy and was lumpy and uncomfortable. We were treated to a lovely, but awkwardly served meal. They had oversold so we had to sit at a small, cramped table. The music in the barn was beautifully presented, the owner of the hotel is also the emcee and soundman and you can tell that that is where his passion lies. It's just too bad that the accommodations and food services are so shabby. When we discussed this with the front desk, she gave us a deduction in our bill. I would love to see this place improve.

Room Tip: Make sure you book on one of the concert in the barn nights. It seems designed for a meal, a concert...

Coming down the drive you begin to soak in the charm - remember the tree lined drive in the movie Forrest Gump...different trees same effect. Our room was large and clean, and the bathroom had a big claw foot tub perfect for soaking in after a day of cycling. The restaurant is solid -good not great. There was live music after dinner and that was charming too. If in this part of Nova Scotia,I recommend the Normaway Inn.

We spent one night at the Normaway Inn on a recent road trip round Nova Scotia. The Inn is in a beautiful and quiet location, with friendly staff and the historic building has some real charm. We stayed in one of the rooms in the main lodge, which was nicely furnished and had some really lovely period features. There is a communal lounge with books and magazines. Unfortunately, not all the period stuff was great and the room, especially bathroom could have done with a little renovation. The wallpaper had started peeling in places and there were some rusty screws (the sharp ends) coming out of the wall next to the doorframe where something had been fixed to the other side of the wall. There was no TV or wifi, which didn't bother us, but might not be right for everyone. We got a great half price deal by booking through the Tourist Information point, but if I had paid the full rate I think I would have felt that I would have been overcharged quite a bit, hence the avarage overall rating.

I recommend the Normaway Inn. We stayed in room 3 with 2 large windows overlooking a pasture of playful horses and the lush vegetable gardens. Nightly live entertainment was a local musician with a fiddle or guitar and fun songs and laughter. The owners and their extended family took wonderful care of us and fed us very well. We especially liked staying here and using the place as our "home base" while we drove and hiked all over Cape Breton then returned to a warm cozy bed. For a reduced rate on almost all B&B's and Inns be sure to book your lodgings through the Visitor Center near the Canso Causeway.

Room Tip: Don't know anything about their cabins but room 3 in their Inn was wonderful!
