“Everything we needed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

We stayed two nights in late July as part of our circuit tour of Cape Breton. The check-in was a little awkward- it doubles as a pizza parlor on some nights, and we seemed to be in the middle of a local crowd and we were uncertain as who to flag down. Once we got someone's attention, we got our key and were shown to our room, which was a surprisingly bright basement apartment. The beds were comfy and the kitchen serviceable though basic with kind of beat-up utensils and mismatched dishes. Everything was clean. Some staff members seemed to be quite young, possibly teenagers, but they were all very helpful in answering questions about local beaches and trails. We enjoyed our stay, but I think you don't need to stay too long because you can do everything there is to do in the area in a few days.

Room Tip: Our basement apartment was nice and spacious, but we did hear every footstep from the people above u...

First, make your reservation over the phone. The internet will never replace the voice of a Cape Bretoner. By the time we got off of the phone we couldn't wait to get to the Mabou Inn and it got better. The owner and staff have worked so hard to make improvements over the years and hopefully they are being rewarded. How about coming down for breakfast to the smell of fresh "porridge bread", muffins, scones and cinnammon buns complimented by a warm smile from the staff. We didn't want to leave but had too. Their mattresses for our trip were the best, great sleep and lots of room to spread out.

Room Tip: Be sure to go to the Red Shoe Pub, the entertainment, food and hospitality made our visit to Mabou m...

Wonderful clean fresh rooms. Private bath directly across the hall was large, very clean and easy to access. Lots of towels, soft robes, and a wonderful shower. The beds and linens were heaven after a long day. The windows opened to give great cooling breeze. The dining room and lounge furnishings/decor were tastefully selected to make it warm and welcoming. The breakfast was superb - large selection and especially try the mini cinnamon buns, freshly baked. We would definitely go back.

There is no dedicated reception office area - just go into the restaurant and find a staff in the kitchen. There is a laundry room for guests but the washing machine was broken. There is a common kitchen area where you can store you cold items in the fridge and even make a full meal if you choose to; it was well equipped.

The restaurant only serves pizza in the evening which seems a shame as there is such potential. We had dinner at the Red Shoe Pub which had great food and entertainment.

The owner came into the restaurant at the end of the evening and gave the new staff 15 minutes of loud berating about their work ethics and what more he expected them to do. This could be heard in the lounge and made us uncomfortable. He should be more careful of guests nearby and in our opinion, more tactful dealing with his staff.

We wonder why a $2.10 'tourist' fee was added to our bill, but did not notice until we had already left. It was the only accommodation in Nova Scotia to do this.

When we arrived, we really didn't know what to expect since the entrance to the inn is also the entrance to the restaurant/pizza parlour, and we thought we were in the wrong place. Once we were warmly welcomed, we checked in and went up to our room (room #1). We were given a huge and comfortable room, nice bedding, an area with a couch for tv viewing (we were there during the olympics so we watched in comfort), quiet, nice amenities, and a short walk from the busy Red Shoe Pub. We stayed two nights but could have spent a week there! They even have pretty good pizza!

The Mabou River Inn is located near Cape Breton. Our room had a private bath across the hallway and robes were provided. The inn serves pizza many nights, but is close to several good restaurants- the most famous is The Red Shoe. Here you can hear the local Celtic music nightly while you have a good pub meal! The bedding was very nice and there is a nice kitchen area where you can cook or store foods for picnics, etc. We would stay here again if we were in the area- good choice for a simple room!

This property has operated as a boarding school, a hostel, and now as an Inn. The latest remodel provides large comfortable rooms (we stayed in room 2), pleasant common areas, and a nice area for a continental breakfast in the morning. Be sure to check out the shrine next door to the Inn, and of course you'll want to visit The Red Shoe Pub for some local music and great food. We understand the Pizza at MRI is quite good, however the pizzeria was not open the night we stayed.

Our room was extremely spacious and had been recently remodeled and updated. Modern windows allowed for fresh air. We were located on a side opposite the road, so had little noise. The bathrooms was well equipped and pleasant. It was a little interesting trying to determine how to check-in...as the directions seemed to guide you to the kitchen. Turns out--that's the right answer...you check in adjacent to the kitchen. Breakfast was pretty pedestrian unless you "upgraded" to the full breakfast. Overall, a very pleasant stay.
