Owner description: Welcome to the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, a magical place on the edge of a continent where past and present come together to celebrate Canada’s diverse heritage. Visit during peak season and take in a full range of services: make friends with a costumed ‘resident’ and enjoy a delicious period meal in a themed restaurant. Feel the ground tremble with the boom of the cannon. Explore the beautiful beach and scenic hiking trails nearby. Then after the sun goes down, figure out ‘whodunnit’ at our murder mystery or take in our dinner theatre, where great comedy and wonderful cuisine is always on the menu. Visit in the shoulder season for some services and to discover the exterior architecture of the Fortress’ reconstructed buildings. Marvel at the stunning views of both the sea and the Fortress from one of our hiking trails, open throughout the year. Take in the quiet and tranquility of the streets in the off-season. Close your eyes to listen to the crash of the waves in the distance.

“Plan for the whole day at the Fortress”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2011

My husband and I visited the Fortress, planning to spend about three hours....five hours later, we left because we needed to get to our next location that evening. We enjoyed the Fortress and talking with the guides and staff so much, all were so knowledgable and willing to chat, we could have spent more time there. This day was probably one of our most memorable of our 12 day vacation.

“A most memorable experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2011

For West Coast Canadians with an interest and a degree in history, visiting Fortress Louisbourg was the high point of our cross-Canada motor trip. Unfortunately road construction delays limited us to less than a half day at the Fortress. Next time we will book a couple of days stay at nearby Louisbourg. Fortress Louisbourg is a Parks Canada National Heritage Site. So the annual Parks Canada passes that we purchased as we transited the Rockies saved us an extra admission. A quarter of the original French Fortress has been rebuilt. It was destroyed after its capture by the British in 1760. A shuttle bus takes you from the Visitor Info centre by the car-park to the historic fortress. After a short walk along the causeway you are greeted by a costumed guard at the entrance to the fortress. Other costumed guides depicted soldiers, musicians, servants and upper class people. When you saw how the common soldiers lived (three to a bed) compared to the officers, you could certainly understand why the French Revolution occurred. The costumed staff provide periodic demonstrations during the day. We saw a drummer we talked to a few months later on National TV. He told us the French military relayed their orders by drum in those days. We were there for the closing cannon drill and firing! The restored buildings are impressive! Period restaurants offer 18th Century food in an authentic setting. The guides were very helpful and informative. Some of them were of Acadian heritage and provided information on the original Acadian Community. Unfortunately our dog had to stay in the SUV while we visited Fortress Louisbourg. No provision was made for visitors with dogs such as ourselves. Our only regret is that we did not have more time to explore this very significant site in the history of Canada.

“WHAT MORE GOOD THINGS TO SAY?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2011

On a beautiful August morning we set out for a fantastic trip to Fortress Louisbourg, that was easy to find after driving through the town of Louisbourg (Bring your Camera)
As we were in in the first group of the day, there was no line up in the reception area and we were taken to two waiting bus coaches and off to the fortress.
There was a charming welcome in a French home & Inn with a very humourous resident. Then off to the Fortress .... challenged and questioned about being a 'British Spy' our answers pleased the guard and we were welcomed to the fortress.
Stepping back in time to say the least was wonderful, talking to the soldiers and residents, who role played to prefection was a treat to behold.
The first outstanding place was the Carpenters shop or boatbuilders, this individual was a well spoken and very talented and dedicated craftsman. *pic attached
I had to fight off staying there and helping.
Off to the real fortress for the Cannon fire, again time travel and smiles throughout the crowd. The reconstructed fort gave us a real taste of what it might have been like many years ago and I am truly pleased we live with todays food & conveniences.
YES, I did purchase a large loaf of soldiers ration bread. Great flavour until it started to get stale an hour or so later, the soldiers of the day had only 1 loaf ration every four days. Either they had great teeth or warm Tea to soalk it in?

To tourism N.S. and the staff at Fortress Louisbourg... Well Done!! Thank you
