“Great stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2013

My husband and I rented the Gardener's Shed at Broadwater Inn this summer and it was a great pet friendly accommodation! I'm a bit of a clean freak, so I really appreciate when floors in pet friendly accommodation are not carpeted and clean! Our host, John Pino, was extremely friendly, as was his staff. We decided to cook in a few nights and when I needed extra "supplies" John immediately provided what we needed. Broadwater Inn is a great base to explore the area. Because the rates are so reasonable at Broadwater, we were able to take an overnight trip and stay on the Cabot Trail, with the Gardner's Shed as home base. I can't think of a better place to stay or a better host than John Pino!!

Big old house formerly owned by the Cunards of Titanic fame. Strangest staircase I've ever seen. Chatty host, who regales with the history of the area. Beautiful location. Hearty breakfast, although the eggs Benedict were overlooked. We stayed in he Bay Room which was fine, but our bathroom was across the hall. Free WiFi.

Definitely recommend this venue. It is not a true B&B; however, if you choose a room in the main building, you will likely enjoy the same experience as being in a B&B where the venue has four guest rooms max and the owners live on the property and guests may cross paths in the common areas or while breaking bread at breakfast. We did not stay in the main building as we had chosen to book in to one of the cabin options available; Cabin #4 at the end of what I affectionately referred to during our stay as "the end of the road" ... literally, as the road ended at our cabin.

Our cabin enjoyed a peaceful relaxing view of the grounds as well as Bras d'Or Lake while being nestled in to the trees at the end of the road offering maximum privacy. We opted to have the hot tub as well for an additional $10/night and it was worth every dime. It is a portable hot tub as used on boats and was just perfect for the two of us at the end of the day. The cabin itself came with a kitchenette complete with dishes, cookware, fridge, stove, and even a BBQ on the deck. Open concept sleeping and living area with full windows to view the grounds and then down to the lake ... far enough away from the road to avoid the sound of the vehicles going by on their way in to Baddeck proper. Full washroom with tub/shower. We choose not to have breakfast in the Inn; however, that was an option for a small additional fee.

John, the Innkeeper, is a very personable fellow who ensured he was on hand to great us upon arrival as well as share some information with us about the area while sitting on comfortable deck chairs enjoying the view. After getting to know us a bit more, he recommended a couple tours that might be of interest to us and I can definitely say that he hit the nail on the head with his recommendation for the Amoeba sailing trip on Bras d'Or Lake as well as the Cabot Trail drive through Cape Breton. Both of us being phone company employees we just had to tour the Alexander Graham Bell Historic site which was very humbling indeed to see what all he and his wife accomplished as well as their peers/students.

Totally recommend this. If you are not sure which of the various venues available at the Inn would suit your needs best, just give John a call and he will help you determine what might work best for you and the rest of your travelling party and will only be a phone call away while you are there should you need to reach him.

Room Tip: Just have a chat with John the Innkeeper and he will help make a choice that I am confident will be...

Part of the fun of getting there is, well...getting there! The Broadwater Inn is one of those stops that adds to the experience of visiting someplace new and exciting. Innkeeper, John, is a very gracious host, engaging storyteller and has a wealth of knowledge about the history of the area, where to eat, and what to do. Our stay exceeded my expectations. We stayed in the Bay room - with a fantastic view from the window seat under the bay window. The room and washroom was clean and well appointed - as were the other rooms we were able to see. You can't go wrong staying here while in Baddeck!

When we initially rang John to make our reservation for a room for 7 nights, he suggested that a cabin might be a better option as it had more room and a BBQ. As he offered it for the same price as a room and did us a good deal on breakfast we took up the offer. Being suspicious, I was a bit concerned about why he was so keen we had a cabin and thought we might not be getting a good deal - how wrong can you be? John genuinely wanted to offer us the best accomodation he could bearing in mind the length of our stay and the cabin completely exceeded our expectations. It was spacious, airy, well decorated and maintained and had a fridge, cooker, microwave, tv and an electric wood burning effect fire. However the real bonus was the outside deck which overlooked the garden and the lake - perfect for sitting out at night, looking at the stars with a beer.
The cabin was spotlessly clean and had a full housekeeping service thanks to Dorothy and Marie. Towels were changed daily and the toiletries and coffee supplies were kept topped up.
Breakfasts are served at communal tables in the dining room and it was enjoyable getting to know the other guests. Minnie was great fun and kept us topped up with coffee and juice and whilst John is an entertaining and knowledgable host he is a bit 'full on' in the mornings. We much preferred it when Minnie was in charge of proceedings, it was so much calmer.
We had a wonderful stay at Broadwater, it really rounded off our trip to Nova Scotia in a fantastic way. If we were ever in the area again this would definitely be our first choice for accomodation.

Room Tip: If possible go for a cabin - really good value and so much space

We stayed at Broadwater on June 17th and 18th. I must admit I was leary as I had booked online but the reviews sounded good so we took our chances. We had nothing to worry about. John is a wonderful host and was eager to help make our visit to Cape Breton memorable. He suggested we drive the trail the day before we had planned and I am so glad we listened. The weather was perfect and the next day it was so foggy and rainy, we would not have seen anything. We stayed in the Gardeners Shed and it was wonderful. Really clean, had everything we needed and to relax in the hot tub watching the sun go down was so relaxing.
We will go back again just to stay at Broadwater Inn.

Our third trip to lovely Cape Breton and we finally found a great b&b! We are frequent bed and breakfasters and Broad Water Inn exceeded our expectations. Our guest room, "Breton", overlooking the lake, was immaculate and comfortable. The staff was more than accommodating and our host, John, made each breakfast a memorable one with his remarkable stories of Alexander G. Bell and his associates.
