“the beds and the staff are NOT the problem”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2012

Lynwood Inn is a quaint and quiet family owned and operated Inn in the village of Baddeck, Nova Scotia. Lynwood Inn seems disorganized, hectic and chaotic on a daily basis - and this observation came right from check-in time. We stayed for two nights and ate in the restaurant twice (one breakfast and one dinner). The food was decent. Breakfast is reasonably priced and really good. The dinner menu on the other hand is mediocre and over priced. The beds were slightly firm for our taste, but then again mattress firmness is a matter of personal opinion - there is no possible way to please everyone on this front - and this is not the deal breaker.

The real problem is that some of the staff is spread much too thin (while others are often standing around doing nothing... it's not hard to tell who the family is in the family run business), more often than not causing problems for co-workers and customer alike. During our stay, the young girl who checked us in was not only the concierge but also a housekeeper, a secretary, a hostess, an errand girl, a customer service representative, a complaint department, and a waitress - generally just the entire front line for this establishment. How is one person supposed to sanely handle all these responsibilities in one day - and continue to provide the Cape Breton hospitality that is so famously know? And from what we understand, about half of the staff is pushed to the limit like that.

This is the problem with Lynwood Inn. How is the staff expected to provided top notch customer service and a memorable experience when they are treated so horribly? In my opinion, the problem is not the beds, it's not the service, it's not the quality of the food - IT'S THE MANAGEMENT. If they were competent enough to employ the right amount of staff then I am confident that there would be less complaints regarding customer service.

It really is a shame though, because the property, the placement, the idea has so much potential. With such a convenient location, the spectacular views and the historical aspect of the main house, Lynwood Inn really has the potential to be fantastic. It’s too bad that potential is taken advantage of by a money hungry, lazy, and disorganized management.

Room Tip: Get something with a view on the top floor - it's worth it!

The staff at the desk was friendly and we got a clean room with 2 twin beds on the top floor. The room was big and the beds were comfortable and not as hard as mentioned in pre ious reviews.
The bad thing is, that there is no elevator in place!
We enjoyed the monthly special "Thanksgiving Dinner" which was niceley prepared and not overprized. I would expect a complimentary breakfast for the high room rate.

Sadly this was the only place we stayed that we didn't care for..
Looks fine from the outside, We were on the top floor, had to carry our big suitcases up several flights of stairs..
Warning - NO elevators ~
the hallways stunk, old musty smell..
The rooms are large, and so are the bathrooms.
it was clean..
but the beds are hard,, and lousy pillows..
The lady at the desk wasn't too friendly.
The restaurant - staff was friendly, food was average.. overpriced...

Room Tip: tip for booking a room.. Book somewhere else..

this review is on the restaurant only. we arrived in town around 4:30 pm and easily found this restaurant. the decor of the restaurant was lovely, but the food was not that great. we ordered some lobsters and a pasta. the lobsters were ok, but the mussels were extremely salty, more importantly not fresh! maybe that is why they were cooked salty? i don't know. the pasta is just so-so.

they started to serve dinner soon. we were definitely not taken enough care of, and the lady in black was so serious, i never saw her smile when talked to her; her tone also did not sound pleasing, at least to me.

all in all, i ended up with paying a little bit more than 10% for tips. 10% is the bottom line for me while eating in a restaurant, no matter how bad the service was. the meal ruined my rest of that day.

not going back next time in cape breton, and would not recommend to my friends.

It seems that everyone is saying the same thing about this Inn, unless you like rock hard beds! After what sleep I got, I was very achey and sore from the way too hard bed, it was like being on the floor. I guess the alternative would be one that was too soft and sank! We felt the room was a little too small and asked if there was something a little bigger or with one bed. If there are a couple in the room with some luggage, the space was very limited. The decor was fair, the bathroom was big although some extra shelf space to put things on would be nice. We had a balcony but the weather was not good to sit out there. The entrance to the building was a little challenging if you have luggage to roll in. It is a gravel walkway and you enter into a hallway where you have to go up or down to your room. There is no elevator, someone to help you carry a bag in or luggage racks. We were on the 2nd floor and did find an emergency exit that we could pull up to and roll right out to the car. On the positive side the place is very well kept and clean. We had breakfast both mornings, although not included in the room rate, was very good and they had a nice selection. The location is good for walking around the little town of Baddeck.

Room Tip: Be aware that unless you like a rock hard bed, this is what you get. If you can get a room on the 2...

I'm reluctant to write this review because everything else about our stay was just great. The fact is, however, that I spent a sleepless night due to the hard beds in this hotel. My husband, who can literally sleep anywhere, had no problem at all but my back played up something awful. The sheets were scratchy and not up to hotel standards either (which you have lots of time to notice when you're unable to sleep). On the positive side the room was large, modern and very clean (though I agree with other reviewers that they could lose those odd doll and fake flower decorations). The restaurant staff were pleasant and efficient, dinner was awesome - we had the lobster special - and I don't think i've ever had anything better than the gingerbread dessert. Baddeck is a charming town and we very much enjoyed our evening walk along the waterfront.

After travelling all day we were tired and looking forward to crawling into our bed. However, it
was a terrible bed very very hard. I could hardly wait for sunrise to get out of the bed. These rooms are small bedding is tired and in need of a change. The bathrooms are large and bright with a jetted tub which was a surprise.

There is no one to help with your luggage and you have to either carry it over the gravel pathway or try and pull through the gravel. Also it should be noted there is no elevator in the hotel and even though it is only a two storey it is difficult as senior citizens to bring your bags from the car along the pathway and up the stairs to your room. I know it is nice to see antiques in hôtels but they do need to be in good repair.

We did not eat here but the menu did look good.
