“Great spot within easy reach!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2009

We rented the Seaside House, a 1923 house that has been in the ownere's family since. Great space, enclosed porch looking at the water, full kitchen, tons of room to move about and close to many of the best hikes in Gros Morne. We also saw the Suites and they are wonderful.

It's a small village (pop. 400) so don't expect hustle and bustle. I was actually worried that the recession hit them hard but was told it had been a very good summer - "that's what it looks like when it's busy here"! The local "one stop shop" has a reasonable variety, but grocery shopping is best in Deer Lake, 50 minute drive away.

It's an easy flight from Toronto - some non-stop - so you can leave your house in Toronto at Noon and be in the Park 4-5 hours later. Soome days, we were totally alone on the trails. It's Newfoundland so it will occasionally rain, but it's worth the trip.

My wife and I spent 3 nights of our honey moon, in the small but beautiful village of Woody Point and had the privalege of staying at Seaside Suites. The owners of this propery are Ken and Darlene, and they go all out to make sure you feel welcomed and accomodated. In fact, a few weeks before we arrived, I received an email from Darlene, asking if we had any special requests or questions about the area, and then a second email wishing us good luck at our wedding the weekend before we arrived. How often does a hotel put so much effort into making your stay feel appreciated, even before you arrive?

When we arrived, Darlene showed us to our suite, which was a gorgeous modern and open-concept unit built right onto the water and is also surrounded by the tablelands and Long range mountains of Gros Morne National Park. The unit also had a huge deck on Bonne Bay which included muskoka chairs, and BBQ to conjure up some of your own cooking. From the deck, we sat out on the last night and watched some Minke whales swim in and out of the bay. One came up about 20 feet from the deck!

As it was still May and Ken and Darlene were in prep mode for the upcomming season, they made special considerations for us and were able to open up the restaurant they owned (across the street) a couple of days earlier. During the day, Ken gave us a menu, and asked us to what we wanted to eat, so it can be prepared by his staff when we visited the restuarant later that evening.

The location of woody point is in close proximity to numerous hiking trails in the souther portion of Gros Morne, as well as a discovery centre explaining the natural features of the park. Although its a bit of a drive (about an hour) from Western Brook Pond or Gros Morne Mountain there is still a tonne of things to do, as well as breathtaking scenery. I would recommend this as place to stay to anyone visiting Gros Morne, whether just passing through for a day or longer!

What a suprise we experienced at this facility; I don't know where to start. For someone like me who has travelled for a living for many years and stayed in some of the best accommodations around the world, I would give Seaside Suites six stars out of five. First of all, the owners (Darlene and Ken Thomas) are the most delighful, helpful and accommodating people you could ever meet. Our suite and balcony was right on the shores of Bonne Bay, a spectacular location providing an excellent view of Gros Morne. The suite itself was amazing with every little extra touch you could imagine including all appliances. Darlene showed us to our suite; a huge open concept with sleeping area (comfortable bed with soft pillows), cooking area (fully equipped), sitting area (comfortable couch and chair plus big flat screen TV on the wall and an electric fireplace) plus a huge balcony (with chairs) on the water, and separate private bathroom with full amenities and explained everything in detail. One nice touch was our options to have them come into the suite to clean and refresh on a daily basis, every second day or whenever we wished; they do not want to disturb. Dining was right across the street where we had breakfast one day and dinner another - all just amazing, especially the dinner of cod tongues. Another night we took a four minute walk to the Old Loft Restaurant, known for its local cusine. Another special touch was Ken arriving with a fishing pole all ready to cast into the bay to try our own luck for dinner. And if you want to do your own BBQ, it will be set up on your balcony.

For supplies, there are stores within walking distance for food, snacks, ice, wine, beer and spirits.

Our only disappointment; we should have booked a week instead of two nights. But we will be back.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Seaside Suites is a four-star waterfront accommodation in the quaint, historic seaside village of Woody Point. We are located in the heart of Gros Morne National Park with views of the Tableland Mountains, Gros Morne Mountain and the ocean waters of Bonne Bay. There is nothing more soothing and scenic as the views and sounds of the ocean. We have two properties across the street from each other, over the water and across the street from the water; the Over the Water Building (which IS over the water) is home to the Gros Morne, Tablelands and Lighthouse Suites. The Wharfside Building is newly opened and has the Sandollar and Starfish Suites as well as Seaside Souvenirs and our Seaside Deli & Dairy Bar, located directly across from the town wharf, where you can try fishing, take in the scenic views with your morning coffee, or catch the water taxi to Norris Point for an outing. We have five well appointed suites. The waterfront of Woody Point has recently been designated a Heritage District for its historic significance on the West Coast of Newfoundland and also for its' restoration of the many historic buildings along the water. When you settle in at Seaside Suites, you can stroll and enjoy our quaint, scenic village. Be sure to choose Seaside Suites for your Gros Morne adventure. You won't want to leave! ... more   less
