We stayed at the Maclellan Inn in the Codroy Valley for two nights in August and found it to be clean but minimal in many respects. Gerald is businesslike and a nice gentleman when you meet him but he didn't follow through on a commitment made. We phoned months before our arrival and booked the Daylilly Room because it has a lake view and he confirmed that room to me in an e-mail. However, that room was not available when we arrived so we had a room with a bit of a view of the lake from a side window on the second floor. It had a slanted ceiling in the bedroom. The slanted ceiling in the bathroom caused my husband to curse when he got up in the night and banged his head (there was no nightlight in the bathroom). There was a little table with two chairs crammed into a small corner and it was impossible for two people to sit at the table. In fact, it was difficult to manoeuver even one chair in the tight space. A tall standing fan took up far too much space in the small room so we placed it in the shower, as we had no plans to use the fan or to take a shower in the cramped bathroom. Breakfast was very basic and the plainest we remember experiencing in a B & B. We would not stay here again. As an alternate, we recommend St. Christopher's Hotel in Channel-Port Aux Basques, which is in a good central location for easily reaching anything along the southwest coast of Newfoundland and the Codroy Valley is just a short drive away.
