“Extra touches make a difference”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2010

We spent 2 days at this B&B and enjoyed it very much. We had tried to book a B&B in Trinity but everything was full except the very expensive options so we looked for something in the general vicinity that met our price range.

All the expected requirenments are there: nice amenties, delicious breakfast, comfortable bed, etc. But what makes this place special is that the owners, Gary and Shelley, really make the extra effort to make your stay enjoyable. For example, they provide free internet and access to a laptop; coffee is waiting outside the room in case you are up earlier than planned. An extra feature is there 9pm "tea" where the guests are served snacks and get the opportunity to chat with each other and the owners.

The only negative: we went to the theatre in Trinity and the drive back, although not very long, was a bit hairy, No street lights and fog.

My husband and I stayed at Captain Blackmore's in June of this year. We wish we could have stayed longer since it was the best B & B experience that we had during our 8 day stay in Newfoundland. Garry & Shelley are wonderful hosts and provide all the little extra touches to make you feel you are visiting with friends. We loved the tea and snacks in the evening where we could meet with other guests. The location is ideal for travelling on the Bonavista Peninsula. We stayed in the Daisy Kean room and it was absolutely wonderful. One of the best night's sleep that we had. We would highly recommend this B & B to anyone travelling alone or with others.

Captain Blackmore, a seafarer and ship builder, would have been proud of his grandson Garry, and his spouse Shelly. They have beautifully resored his mansion on the shores of the harbour at Port Union. Manor is close to highway 230, but far enough away that you cannot hear traffic, only seagulls. Rooms are small, but comfy with great bed. Views over the ocean which is only a few feet from the veranda sitting room. We have stayed in B & Bs all over the world, and this is the best ever. Breakfast is over the top with vast selection. We have never heard of Port Union. They are restoring the site of the Fisherman's Protective Union, and the home of the Fisher's Advocate newspaper. Tour is facinating. In a few years this place will rival Trinity and Bonavista as a tourist site. Shelly will arrange a private tour for you (she is on restoration society) if you are off season.

Captain Blackmore’s was the only bed and breakfast where we spent more than one night over a two-week trip to Newfoundland, and we were very glad to have chosen it.
Port Union is some twenty kilometres south of Bonavista, and mid-way between Trinity and Bonavista, a good location for exploring by car. It is an unusual town, created by a union, the Fishermen’s Protective Union, early in the 20th century. Captain Blackmore built his house when he realized the potential of the site for his coastal marine interests.
The large, attractive house is built right on the water’s edge of Catalina Harbour, clearly marked and visible from the highway. It has been beautifully restored, with magnificent woodwork, trim and wood floors. A front porch and second storey balcony added by the owners make the most of the site.
There is good parking on gravel close to the house. The entrance is across a large back porch into a splendid entrance hall with a polished wood staircase leading to the second floor.
Our second-floor room had windows in two directions and a large private balcony which overlooked the harbour and the sunrise. The bedroom was roomy, had a firm queen-sized bed, an armoire (no closet) and a small dressing table/desk. The soothing décor of our room reflected the impeccable taste throughout the house of our hosts, Garry and Shelly Blackmore. The room was well supplied, including pens and writing paper. There was controllable electric heat and a room air conditioner. The bathroom was fully equipped, with lots of shelf space to put toilet kits and with a good supply of toiletries and good towels.
Downstairs, the large, comfortable porch facing the harbour is available to guests and includes a computer where guests can check e-mail, as well reading material.
Our hosts invited the guests each night to tea or coffee and an elegantly presented snack with home baking and fresh fruit in the dining room. Shelly served an excellent hot breakfast, which we could select from a menu, and again there was baking and fresh fruit, including partridge berries picked right behind the house.
We were offered a discount both for staying two nights and for off-season (September). This made Captain Blackmore’s by far the best value as well as the most enjoyable stay of our vacation.
Garry recommended nearby restaurants, in Port Union, Bonavista and Elliston. As well, there are limited services available in Port Union and Catalina. In Port Union, you can also visit The Factory, a museum presenting the story of the Fisherman’s Protective Union.
The attention to detail, comfort and the hosts' concern for the guests is a model for other places to emulate.

We stayed for 2 nights at Captain Blackmore's and loved it. At first, we were worried that Port Union was in the middle of nowhere but it turned out to be the perfect location to explore both Trinity and Bonavista (20 minutes both ways). Don't expect to walk anywhere from your B&B though, you have to drive. The house is gorgeous and Garry and Shelley have carefully thought of every little detail to make your stay memorable. I am gluten intolerant and for the evening tea Shelly made me special gluten-free brownies. For breakfast, everyone gets little mini-muffins hot out of the oven to start and she made me special muffins too. They had great restaurant recommendations and lots of recommendations for across Newfoundland.

We enjoyed our visit to Port Union and were very pleased we stayed at Captain Blackmores. Garry and Shelley were the perfect hosts. They work so well together and strive to meet all the needs of their guests. The tea in the evening was very special for a B&B and we learned so much talking to others. The breakfasts were prepared , as chosen by the guests. They were beautifully presented and delicious. The location is central to exploring the Trinity area and Bonavist. Garry and Shelley are very knowledgeable and will help you plan your days. Very enjoyable stay!!!!!

My two sisters, my wife and I were enchanted by this carefully restored manor, in a beautiful setting in Port Union. Try to get the 'Daisy Kean' room for the view across the bay and impressive sunrises over the restored Heritage Village. Garry and Shelley Blackmore were attentive to all our needs. We especially enjoyed the evening invitations to chat with them and the other guests around a table that had snacks and beverages. It was a great way to get to know people and, as a bonus, to get tips on what to see the next day and warnings about moose and such. We met some very nice people from Hamilton, Calgary (not sure...) and some Americans. Port Union is close to everything you'll want to see (Bonavista Bay, puffins in Elliston, pageants in Trinity, and plenty more. ) A truly unforgettable experience.
