My wife and I recently stayed two nights at Captain Blackmore's. It is located in Port Union, which has a number of attractions in it's own right, and is almost midway between Trinity and Bonavista.
The house has been beautifully and lovingly restored by the owners Garry and Shelley Blackmore and conveys a sense of the history of the home. We stayed in the Newfoundlander Suite, which consisted of a large bedroom, and equally spacious sitting area, and a deck facing the harbor. The rooms were gorgeous and comfortably furnished. We peeked into the other rooms, which were also spacious and equally beautiful.
The full hot breakfast was delicious with a choice of items. However, it is the extra touches that really sets Captain Blackmore's apart. Breakfast begins at 8:00 AM, but at 7:00 AM a tray of hot coffee is set out outside your room as an "eye-opener". Also, at 9:00 PM each evening freshly-baked goodies are set out in the dining room with coffee and herbal teas.
Shelley and Garry are the perfect hosts. During our six previous trips to Newfoundland & Labrador we have come to expect and grown accustomed to the sincere and gracious hospitality that Newfoundlanders are so justly known for. However, Shelley & Garry exceeded our expectations by their friendly and welcoming
If you are fortunate enough to stay at Captain Blackmore's be sure to ask Garry for directions to "Suzy's Cafe" in Birchy Cove, where you will find some of the finest crab cakes outside of the eastern shore of Maryland.
