“Tons of Fun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

My husband and I have been on many whale watches in many locations over the years and Sea Watch Tours is on the top of our short list of favorite operators. Captain Peter Wilcox and Mate Durlan make every trip a pleasure. The combination of experience and passion that they have makes the odds of a successful trip greatly in their passengers’ favor. We have gone out with them on 4 different occasions, every one of them memorable. When asked if we saw any whales, we have been able to answer enthusiastically every time, “TONS.” Our first trip with Sea Watch, we were treated to courting right whales, the second time out it was finbacks feeding near the surface, close to the boat and large numbers of seabirds. This past week, (mid-September), we were blessed with humpbacks, white-sided dolphins, harbor porpoise, Atlantic puffins, northern gannets, and other seabirds as well as a few migrating hawks. The weather and whale-watching conditions were so great, we could not resist going out twice during our five-day stay on Grand Manan. Both days the humpbacks put on remarkable “shows” to everyone’s delight – swimming close to the surface, breaching, flipper-flapping, tail lobbing and appearing in number all around us. It’s super soul-satisfying everytime –highly recommended.

“Machias Seal Island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013

Recently returned from Grand Manan where we fortunately booked a tour with Sea Watch Tours to Machias Seal Island. Rave reviews, cannot say enough about this experience. Captain Peter Wilcox and mate Durlan Ingersol made for a very informative and knowledgeable crew. This experience was unbelievable, a 1.5 hour sale to the island and another 1.5 hours on the island in a bluff photographing/watching/ejoying the puffins, plus a drive by of a seal colony that was amusing as well. Trip was approx.$180 per couple

“Enjoyable and guaranteed whales”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

This is our fifth time out whale watching so we have a bit of experience on board a variety of boats. The price is reasonable ($65.00 / adult - 2013) and they guarantee you will see whales or the trip is free. Since you don't pay for your trip until you are aboard and on your way back to shore, it seems like a legitimate promise. There is ample free parking and it is a fairly accessible boat. We were travelling with my Mom and daughter who both have mobility issues and they were able to get on and off the boat without too much difficulty. I wouldn't say it is wheelchair accessible, but if you can walk a block and take a few steps, then you will be quite able to board and exit this boat. We truly enjoyed our trip and were lucky enough to see Puffins as well as some Fin Back whales and a variety of seals.

The captain and mate are both incredibly knowledgeable and truly care about their passengers' experience. The captain searched for an extra hour trying to find a Humpback whale (to no avail alas), but he did manage to find us a couple of Puffins out diving while he searched.

The one comparison I would offer is that this is not a 'guided' tour. The mate and captain were happy to offer you information if you asked, but only wildlife was specifically identified. If you're looking for a tour that tells you some of the history of Grand Manan or Whitehead Island or any of the surrounding geography then come prepared with questions or take a different tour.

I would have labelled this a perfect tour if there had been someone identifying points of interest or things worth noting on our trip. The last two hours of our trip were dreadfully long as we searched for the Humpback, but information about seaweed formations, why some areas appeared rough and others were glassy calm, or the name of the light house we just passed (you know, things that locals often take as common knowledge, but land lovers like us, have no clue!), would have definitely made the trip more enjoyable and left us with the same upbeat feeling we had upon spotting the whales and Puffins.

This tour company also goes to Machias Island to view the Puffin nesting area (the only company allowed to do so), but this is a separate tour which is $95.00 a person. We didn't do this tour so I can't offer a comment on this, but a local friend told me it was amazing even if you aren't a bird person.
