After a... let's call it camping equipment malfunction... forced us to make last-minute alternate plans, we opted to spend our three nights on Grand Manan at McLaughlin's Wharf Inn. With two children aged 7 and 8, I was a bit hesitant to try a B&B with shared bathrooms, but availability on the island seemed pretty limited, so we went ahead. Funny how things work out!
The Inn was just beautiful. From the outside in, the decor screams clean and simple, with a tasteful country/maritime feel. The bedrooms are somewhat sparse and a bit dated, but like the rest of the inn, they are spotless, and the decor suits the look of the rest of the place.
The best part of the inn - and all of Grand Manan - was the people. Brenda, the owner, is the friendliest woman, and an incredible cook. In fact, my daughters declared she made the best bread in the world, and the best blueberry muffins they've ever had. All the staff at the inn - the housekeeper, the waitresses at dinner - were so wonderful. They chatted with us, gave us great tips about the island, and were overall amazingly friendly and polite. My worries about being in a B&B with the girls were quickly put to rest.
We were shocked by how quiet (aka, empty) the place was. On the busiest night we were there, only half of the six bedrooms were taken, despite being a clearly busy period on the island. It made us feel like we'd found a secret jewel on the island! Perhaps one reason for it being somewhat quieter is that it is located in Seal Cove, away from the ferry and what seems like most of the other accomodations and activities on the island. However, with Grand Manan only being about 30 km from north to south, McLaughlin's is certainly not far from anything.
In fact, the Inn is about a 2 minute walk from the most beautiful, sandy beach on the island. Seal Cove beach stretches out for miles in length, and goes out forever at low tide. It was a great spot for beachcombing, clam digging, and, if you're brave, maybe even a bit of swimming.
