Avoid the run down overpriced places in Port Hardy catering to captive BC Ferries trade,
and stay in Port McNeill down the road, service centre of north island. Compact and attractive town with most services, and BC Ferry to Alert Bay and Sointula, worth the short trip. Several older hotels and motels, Haida Way has good food, Black Bear is across the road and fairly new, family operated, built by owners who ran a local cedar mill. Good personal service and staff all try to help. Attractive timber sided buildings, with a row of cabins being built. Large for a motel, lovely views over the town and harbour, huge car park for trailers and campers., and a covered outdoor eating area, with bbqs. All modern, well maintained and very clean. Breakfast room in reception building has a pretty good buffet with most standards, fruit, yogurt, eggs, waffles, toasters, pastries and good coffee. Doubles as a meeting room for groups. Several good pubs and restaurants down on the harbourfront.
Satellite flat panel TVs, wifi reaches most areas on the large site, complimentary computer in reception area.
Not quite a resort, although aiming for that and getting there; has a spa building with good indoor pool, whirlpool, saunas, exercise equipment for guests, and massages/beauty treatments.
High end prices for the area but worth it considering the facilities. Have stayed there several times, planning a group trip, consistent and friendly service.
All rooms good, built around central parking area, more privacy upstairs.
