We stayed at the Best Western in Sherwood Park April 4-6th, 2008. We were part of a larger group that came to the city for a hockey tournament (9 and 10 year old boys). The check in went smooth until we were given their full page of 'Rules for Sports Teams'. There were some general rules regarding quiet time and not vandalising the property. But some of the rules were quite ridiculous. For example, the hotel would not allow you to take hockey gear to your room (a fine of $50 would be levied to the coach if anyone was caught). A bit of a problem when the kids are on the ice three times in one day and really need to dry out their equipment (was cold and snowy the weekend we were there). There was a storage area available that was to be shared with all other teams present in the hotel. Not the most secure location but we did have to sign the waiver stating the hotel was not responsible if anything was taken from the storage area. A 10 year olds hockey equipment smells a lot better than the cigarette smoke they allow on many of the floors. And while this hotel does have a big beautiful foyer, we were also made aware that it was not for any members of the 'sports party' to gather in. That would require an additional booking and associated costs.
Most of our group consisted of families so the fact that there was no pool as part of the hotel was a little inconvenient. The hotel website states that they offer a coupon for discounted admission to the attached Millenium Park pool, but one attendant said they no longer have that offer while another said they never did have coupons. The pool was a lot of fun for the kids but costs add up when you have to pay for the daily use. The pedway that connects the hotel to Millenium Park was filthy dirty. There was garbage lying around on the floor and half of the ceiling tiles were either missing or broken. I don't know who's responsibility the upkeep of this hallway is (hotel or pool) but it was gross. Another thing this hotel lacked that would be helpful to travelling families is a fridge. None of the rooms have fridges on our floor. I saw one family upon checkout that actually had a bar fridge on their luggage cart. They headed out down the street to Costco to buy one when they realized their room didn't have one. And there are no cots at this hotel either. So, if your family doesn't fit into two queen beds, you had better bring a foamie and bedding.
This hotel had cost us more than most hotels that we use when attending out of town hockey tournaments (including other Best Westerns). The rooms were clean but very average. Their supply of toiletries is also a little scarce (bring your own lotion/cream). I don't think that families receive value for their money at this hotel.
