“Charming, very comfortable, B&B!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2009

My Sister and I stayed at Bucks House for one night while visiting family in this lovely village.
We were very impressed with the high standard of comfort in the charming bedroom, and adjacent bathroom. The house is full of traditional character, and is extremely comfortable and welcoming.

The English breakfast was excellent, with most of the produce locally sourced. We would definately return, and have no hesitation in recommending this as a very comfortable place to stay when visiting the area.

We booked 3 rooms for 16th July to attend a wedding in Finchingfield. The charming building we stayed in was 500 years old.It was full of character and warmth and the bedrooms were absolutely fabulous , still keeping in character with the building .Every thing you needed for a stay was available even down to dressing gowns. The food was excellent and the hospitality of the proprietors was amazing.I would definitely recommend Buck House to anyone travelling in the nearby beautiful Essex countryside.

This corner of Essex could easily be overlooked but it has pleasant rural scenery, pretty, quiet villages and small towns, well maintained country footpaths and bridleways, good pubs and restaurants and some quite interesting cultural attractions. Plenty to fill in a few days and some of the best England has to offer.
Great Bardfield is a pretty village with interesting architecture, a couple of shops, two pubs, a windmill and an ancient church. Bucks House is situated in the middle of the village, opposite one of the pubs. Despite the house's central location the rooms are quiet, partly because the windows are double glazed but also because nothing much seems to go on in the village after bedtime. (We only have experience of midweek stays.)
There is no private parking for visitors although it is possible to park in a quiet service road alongside the house. The rooms (and beds) are very comfortable, and the house is furnished with style and well kept. The Postons were welcoming and friendly and did their best to make our stay pleasurable. The atmosphere was informal and relaxed. The local information pack in our room gave details of places to eat, drink and visit and was well researched and helpful. Breakfasts were plentiful, well cooked and used locally sourced ingredients including delicious homemade preserves. The Bucks House website gives an accurate impression of what to expect.
We have had two very enjoyable breaks at Bucks House and hope to return there before long.

My wife and I stayed for 2 nights whilst I experienced my 60th birthday present of a steam driving experience at nearby Colne Valley Railway. The owners were very friendly, knowledgeable about the area and provided delicious breakfasts. The rooms were as charming. No evening meals but excellent restaurants nearby.

We stayed at this lovely location from May 9th until May 15th. I very much liked the owners of the house, the Postons. I had contacted the owners by both e-mail and phone and at all times they were very helpful. I had managed to make a bumble of even their great directions and they went out of their way to come and get me from a nearby town.

My traveling partner was my 85 year old father and we did not find the one flight of stairs to be a problem. Our rooms were on the front of the house which afforded us a nice view. The street is right in front of the dwelling, but the windows are double paned. The weather was warm while we were in town and we kept our window opened and were not bothered by noise.

Bucks House is very old and spacious. Careful attention has been taken to show off the Elizabethan interior of the house. Antiques and paintings abound inside the house, and a lovely English garden awaits the weary traveler outside. Everything was either blooming or showing the promise of a lovely summer while we were there.

Breakfast is served in a formal dining room, and we ate heartily of our proper English breakfast. There were plenty of places to sneak off to for a bit of reading or for a bit of television out of your room. Directly across from the house is a pub and another within the next block. Entertainment and good pub food are close by if you might like a bite to eat or a pint.

Like most B&B owners, the Postons know their area and make very helpful suggestions when needed to their clients. We were in town doing a bit of genealogy and their knowledge of the area and people nearby was very helpful. We felt like we were a part of the family. For travelers who might want a home away from home feeling, I say give this B&B a try.

We had a great stay at Bucks House a 16th century home with some modern conveniences like a large bathroom with extra toiletries, very nice rooms, and our own key. We awoke to a wonderful english breakfast of egg, sausage, ham and more fixed by Peter Poston and were shown the garden by his lovely wife Nessie. The B&B is located on the high street in Great Bardfield.. The Postons were great hosts, and their B&B is great for a weekend or longer. Very relaxing and plenty of area to explore in Essex. Telephone and internet available if you need it.
