“More like helllios- pay more money and enjoy your vacation elsewhere in Varna.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2012

We asked for a room with a twin bed and a baby crib.
We got there at 15:00. Check in is suppose to be from 14:00 on. Only at 16:00 we got the key to a tiny room( only after adding extra money for the baby crib!) with two single beds and no place to put in a baby crib.
We paid extra and got what they claim to be their best room on the top floor. The view from the room is amazing but! We didn't have hot water and had to call the maintenance constantly throughout our stay! There's no bathtub- understandable, as there is no hot water to fill in....
There are 2 elevators in the hotel. One didn't work for 2 days! Sometimes we spent more than 10 minutes waiting for the elevator to arrive.
Adding to this the hotel is placed far from the beach, so you have to pay extra money for taxis- such a waste.

Room Tip: Go to Melia hotel- it's amazing!

This used to be called HELIOS SPA HOTEL, now that has been re named the DoubleTree by Hilton, and they left this bit of the hotel over, in one word it is a dump, we had booked to stay 4 nights we arrived at 9 in the evening with a young child so we stayed but next morning paid an extra $10 per day or so and moved to the Doubletreenext door, that was no 5* but a lot better then this place do not waste your money please.

We were sold this hotel as 5* by Thomas Cook. I have stayed in better travelodges. The cleaner on our floor didn't. We had to argue with the cleaner for extra pillows, I think she wanted a bribe to do her job. Not everyone was on an all inclusive package so the breakfast and dinner was a bit of a scramble. Basically any good food was snaffled up within seconds most of it disappearing into bags for beach lunches. But mostly the food was ok, just not great. the only issue was the rudeness and pushing from the russian guests, never seen such ill mannered people.
One day an old peasant grandmother stumbled into the pool area begging for water, the staff refused her and started making fun of her. gypsy or not no one deserves that. They were about to make her sing for some water when i stepped in. On a good note the animation staff were excellent the best I have come across. We were glad to leave and will never book TC again. This is 2 star accomodation at best.

Room Tip: Do not book here! If you must get a room at the back as it is noisy at the front.

The old Helios Spa & Resort is now Doubletree By Hilton. From a 4 star hotel it once was they claim now to be a 5 star hotel. Well IT IS DEFINITELY NOT!!!

Bad points:
1. It is a real 3 star hotel, not 5 (this realy annoys me). Hate when they do this marketing scheme, so they could trick customers into believing they spent a lot less for a top hotel.
2. I requested in my reservation a non-smoking room with bathtub and I got a room that smelled like a pub and surprise, no bathtub, just a space with a shower hose.
3. The hotel that was in front of the sea view rooms was demolished and the sight was depressing.
4. Also, because of the demolition the stairs leading to the main promenade street were destroyed and we had to descend on other stairs that were more abrupt and half the way with no light.
5. The morning coffee was terrible. They should change it to espresso.
6. The chaise longues were few and the swimming pool small.
7. My friends had a little black neighbour in their room: a cockroach. Thank god the hotel didn't charged them :P
8. No free internet connection in the rooms, just in the main lobby (that was working ok)

Good points:
1. The new mattresses and pillows were the best.
2. The LCD screen was an improvement and also the coffee maker.
3. Nice touch: at check in we all received a hot delicious cookie.
4. The white and fluffy bathrobes and slippers.
5. The reception staff was friendly.
6. The rooms and the pools were clean.
7. The breakfast was ok and this year they discovered freshly squeezed orange juice. In the last 2 years they served only something that looked like juice but was only aroma and colourants.
8. The parking was complimentary, if you were lucky enough to find an empty space :)

All in all, if they admitted this is a 3 star hotel and promote it like this, I would say ok, i liked it, I would recommend it to my friends.
This was the 3rd year I come here and I it was my last. Next year I'm going in Sunny Beach. If you wanta true 5 star hotel go in Sunny Beach at Majestic, or Riu Helena.

This hotel has been taken over by Doubletree by Hilton, it hasnt made the slightest difference, it is still of poor quality, and nobody seems to be interested, it is deffinatly not ready for occupation, Saga should be ashamed of itself for sending people here, it has proved to me that Saga do not take there customers into account it is just money orrientated. this place is not for elderly people, if you are not fully mobile you are stuck.the rep here is freelance and is only interested in shutting you up and keeping in with management.

The room service is bad, lazy and doenst clean. the toilet had pee stains, the drains smell of old rusty pipes, the balcony was flooded because it rained and didnt drain and covered with flying ants. I found an old shoe under the bed and the carpet was filthy! Now to the food, undercooked meats, sausauges that were served for over a week and potatoes for every meal time. The salad was old and brown and the sauces smelled bad. The cheese, along with the yogurt was kept unrefrigerated all day long and there are temperatures of over 85 degrees fahrenheit. Now im back home and im fighting with a bad stomach flu, diarrhea and headache. Ive neve been to a worse hotel.

When first arrived went to our room and first thing that hit you was the smell, it smelt of drains and also had a ant nest in the door frame. Cleanliness in room was terrible, and towels were very shabby and frayed . The food in the restaurant was always cold, mouldy bread, no cups always in dishwasher, tea machine always breaking down.Staff very unhelpful couldn't understand you. The drinks bar was always left unattended,so much for all inclusive. In the indoor pool area the tiles were very slippery, as i found out when i slipped on my bum.Advise anyone too never go to this hotel says it'sa 3star but is really a dump like a prison cell!
