“Great hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2013

Great hotel located in the city center, close to the beach. Everything you read in the folder advertising is truthful - there are several restaurants and pools, the service is good and conscientious, bartenders prepare a colorful drinks, the food is delicious. There is also quite well-equipped gym, so Take clothes for exercise. An interesting fact in the hotel are themed restaurants - I recommend to go to each of them! The Bulgarian will show you the traditional cuisine of the region, Japanese sushi is great and there is a great dessert with fried ice cream. (Really, hot ice cream! Not yet tried anything like this before :) Ask about these restaurants at the reception. We all loved it and we spent a pleasant week of holidays.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

We are a young couple traveling, aged 27. After reading all of these glowing reviews on the hotel, we were quite disappointed to see that it didn’t match our expectations of it. Even though we always research TripAdvisor and other review-based hotel sites thoroughly before booking, I guess it was just one of those times when the quality of what other people appreciate is not on par with yours.

Let me start my debunking the quality of the food served: we were sold on reviews that mentioned the fact that the hotel had a different cuisine every night, but do not be fooled (like we were), the food is of a medium quality restaurant, nothing more. If there is a small diversity at the buffet, it is of average food, nothing special. For example, throughout our 8-day stay, there was only one type of cheese served, and no other drinks other than sodas and concentrate juices, while the water had a bad taste (so we ended up buying bottled water for the whole trip). No healthy alternative whatsoever for drinks, and if this is how all these parents grow up their kids at home, I feel sorry for the little ones. Moreover, it seemed like 70% of the food was cooked in oil (thus unhealthy), while some foods weren’t even well cooked.

The staff was ok-ish, but waay too many persons serving in various positions didn’t speak English at all, only Bulgarian. The parking is indeed expensive (15 euro/night), while a decent wifi connection in-room (and against payment!) is a very hard thing to achieve. You do get it better in the lobby, but it’s far from top shape as there are always people performing video-calls, browsing videos and using bandwidth.

The dress-code is also something no one tells you about (not our travel agency or the hotel website anyway), so if you’re not a venerable 50-old gentleman always carrying a pair of khaki trousers with you (especially during the hot months of july-August!!), be warned that you are not going to be permitted entrance in the main restaurant for dinner, as long pants are required.

The elevators are old (but at least working!), and the overall feeling was that of an old communist hotel in a good form. The water in the shower would stop every once in a while, or start being cold instead of hot for extended periods of time, the shower curtains would fall if you didn’t know how to properly pull them, the heavy emergency exit handles on certain doors would sometimes fall when you pushed them, and only after I notified a repair man many days after this kept repeating did it to get any attention. The A/C didn’t to a great job, we had to leave it running for a period of time before returning to the room in order to properly cool it. The TV’s are ancient and you might find spiders & webs on the ceilings. Oh, and there are absolutely NO SIGNS whatsoever from the main road to the Bolero. Even if you get off the main road through the myriad of hotels that comprise the Golden Sands, chances are noone will be able to tell you where to go or which direction to pursue. We ended up searching by car in frustration for what seemed like half an hour before stumbling upon it. You would think that the highest praised hotel in the Golden Sands has proper road signs leading to it; you would be miserably wrong. Do your due diligence and make sure you know the exact route within the GS to the hotel.

On the plus side: the receptionists were very helpful and spoke fluently many languages; the rooms were spacious and cleaning-service was ok. If you have (small) children, the animation team will keep him entertained at all times, so no worries there.

In the end, I guess you could just get along with all the above, if you tried to get it out of your head and not think about it. But for people to say that it is in one of the best holiday resorts they have ever seen/been to in years, clearly they have absolutely no idea how a real 4 superior/5 stars resort looks like. Of course, for the Golden Sands, the Ravel Bolero might very well be the best option around. But for someone not having (small) children, save your money, go elsewhere! There is no oasis here.

Room Tip: Try to get a high-floor room with a good view of the main pool; they can be a bit noisy but they hav...

The worst holiday spent there, we will never go there ever!!! We are very disappointed by this hotel. We go there with our baby (1 year old) and there is no ramp for wheelchairs, only steps, we move very hardly because this steps; very narrow elevators! Very bad hotel policy, unfriendly staff, we can't leave towels at the pool or sea because they took our towels and they did'nt found it , poor food, paid parking is very expansive (15 euro/ night) , no internet acces free in the room or pool, only at the reception; My husband had to buy long pants because at the dinner ,men can enter in the restaurant only with long pants. We don't recommend this hotel to anyone especially if you have babies or wheelchair! TERRIBLE!!!

Vacation the hotel was wonderful. It is a spectacular location, where you are treated royally. I do not missed anything. It is a good choice for both young and older people, the hotel having all sorts of recreational activities.

We are a family of two children, age 12-14, and two adults, age 49. We spent one week at the Bolero in July -13. Golden Sands is a crowded and noisy place, but the Bolero stands out as an oasis with the buildings in an almost closed circle around the garden and pool area. It’s a completely different world than outside. Inside everything is more quiet, very clean and pleasant, and the whole staff is friendly and professional. The receptionists were extremely helpful and spoke English, French and German. Rooms were nice and kept spotless, very good air condition. Pools also nice, children’s at the ground level and a more adult one at the upper level. Plenty of sun beds and usually no problem to find one. Beach towels are included and you can change them every day if you want. The hotel also has its own area at the beach. It’s about a 150 m walk from the main entrance and has parasols and sun beds plus a small bar that is included in the package. The restaurants were great, good variation and high quality. Don’t forget to try the Bulgarian which is small and hidden behind the big grill restaurant, and try the chicken kebab. Delicious! The main restaurant has a strict dress code, men need long trousers, otherwise casual. The three others are not so strict. Everything is all inclusive, with a few exceptions: You have to pay 49 Leva for the safe deposit box, and 10 Leva for 12h of WiFi in the rooms. The last thing is parking which is a big problem in the whole Golden Sands area, and therefore expensive. It’s 20 Leva pr day at the hotel. Lastly there is the Spa department where you can get several kinds of treatments at extra cost. There is free WiFi in the Lobby; it was reasonably fast and reliable. The WiFi network in the rooms was less reliable and fell out from time to time. Except from this I would say that all in all the hotel standard was at the level of good Western Europe congress hotels.
Only once was I reminded of the old times Eastern Europe mentality: When you order soft drinks like Coke in the pool bar you get it in small glasses. When you order beer you get a big glass. I like diet coke, and the bar was a distance from where we had our base, so I asked to get coke in a big glass. This was not possible, I could get as many small glasses as I wanted, but not coke in a big one. The only explanation was that this is the rule. It was almost charming…
On our day of departure we had a very late flight and the bus left the hotel at 21.30. Even though check out time was 12.00 we were told that we could keep our all-inclusive rights the whole day, and we could use the showers and lockers in the spa department. Very convenient.
A few tips: Don’t use the money exchange service in the hotel, the rate is OK, but they have an 8% service charge. There is a bank machine down at the beach, just to the left when you get down from the hotel. There is also an exchange service at the airport, don’t use that, the rate is terrible!
Rent a car for a couple of days and have a look around. We booked one from Avis from home with delivery at the hotel. The point is that the hotel has its own rental service with Technocar wich is much cheaper (68 Leva pr day for a class B, Hyundai Getz), and then you get free parking as well. The only drawback is that you may want a GPS and I don’t know if Technocar can provide that. Don’t miss the Aladzha Monastery which is built in caves, just 4-5 km from the hotel.
In conclusion: One of the best holiday resorts I have seen, we loved it and highly recommend it!

We have just returned from a 12 day stay and I can say that it was one of the best hotels I have stayed during the years.
Personnel was very helpful and always at hand with whatever information needed. One extra remark for the animation team went to great lengths to keep people interested.
The hotel was very clean and well maintained, rooms spacious (at least for us it looked that way: 2 persons plus our daughter), kept spotless by the chamber maid which also did all possible to keep our young daughter happy.
One small negative remark concerning the internet service, which was free I the lobby but against payment in room and not very reliable. I hope this small issue will be fixed until our next visit, as we intend to visit this hotel again.
