This hotel is a self-styled 5*, but it is really a low 4* or high 3*. The buildings and surroundings are fine, lots of marble, leather etc., and a really nice pool. The hotel itself is very clean and our room (1421) was spacious with a view over the pool and the beach beyond. However, they make a great deal of fuss about bringing food/drink into the hotel "because we cannot guarantee the quality". This is rubbish, nobody who has bought food in a supermarket expects the hotel to guarantee its quality - it is simply an excuse to force you to buy food and drink in the hotel. They also have that nonsense notice about using your towels again "to help save water/the environment" when what they really mean is "save our laundry costs". There is a safe in the room which cost us 50 lev for the fortnight to use. On the plus side the free wifi internet in the lobby area worked well, only dropped out occasionally and was instantly reset on request. The staff in the bar were great, and on reception too, no complaints there. When we were there the hotel was not by any means full, but there was one day in particular when it was impossible to find any empty sunbeds around the pool so it must be a real fight in season. The pool boys don't seem to do anything except stand around the towel hut and chat. You have to get your own mattresses from the pile and they put a note on the shutters of the towel hut asking you to bring them back when you have finished with them. They don't bother putting up the umbrellas, you have to do that for yourself also. Not really 5* service is it? There is some very noisy "entertainment" for children at about 7.30pm and again for the adults starting at about 9.30pm but it doesn't last long (thank goodness) and didn't interfere with sleep at all.
For the money we paid we thought it was good value, right at the quiet end of Sunny Beach which is what we wanted. To catch the local bus you have to walk through the sister hotel to the road, not a problem at all. Buses are cheap and will take you to the centre of Sunny Beach or beyond to Nessabar for under £1. Other have said how "tacky" Sunny Beach is and I would agree with that. The Helena Sands in at the best end, but the centre is definitely for young people wanting to get drunk and karaoke. Unfortunately there are not many good restaurants - for that you need to go to Nessabar.
