A group of 6 girls aged between 23-26 years of age spent a week at the Mariner Hotel in July 2012 via Thomas Cook. We flu out on Friday 20th July from Glasgow and arrived at the hotel on Saturday morning around 4.30am. We were a little shocked when our rep Craig told us we could check in and he would give us 5mins and come up to our room for our “meeting” we got our keys (had 2 rooms booked) and headed up. After about 5mins the rep appeared and walked straight into our room, firstly I think it’s highly inappropriate for someone to just walk into your room (he done this on more than one occasion during our stay) it’s also inappropriate for the rep to want to do your meeting at 4.30am in the morning in your room when you’ve just arrived. The reason for this is so they can try and trap / force people into taken the 18-30’s package. DON’T DO IT!!!!!
He gave us the “chat” and told us we could have the full package for just under 500 LEVS, this would work out around £250 allowing us to take part in 5 different activities including a bar crawl, booze cruise, silent disco and a school disco night at Club Orange. As we are a little bit older than 18 and have been on many girls holidays over the past 5-6 years including club 18-30’s before we knew straight away that he was at it and trying to get way too much money out of us. One member of our group actually worked as a holiday rep for Thomas Cook the 3 previous years so we certainly weren’t silly little girls about to part with that kind of money. When we told Craig no we wanted to do our own thing & would get back to him if we wanted to do any of the activities his attitude changed completely, he became rather nasty asking why we had even bothered to come on holiday if we didn’t plan on having fun?!?! Got really uptight about it but we were adamant that we wanted to do our own thing. Craig was a creepy guy and very touchy feely with people beware of the creepiness that’s all I’m saying. All the deals he was trying to sell us can be bought on the main strip for 15 LEVS each (£7.50) or 3 events for 40 LEVS (£20) really???? Yes really it’s an absolutely joke, we meet many people in our hotel that had been caught out by the reps and was either angry or upset about it and of course regretted parting with such a large some of money.
The hotel itself was clean especially for 18-30’s however our towels did only get changed once and the bed sheets were not changed at all other than that it was relatively clean. It is extremely load at night with people sitting on balcony’s singing, shouting, screaming, fighting, chapping on all the doors etc. right up till about 7-8am in the morning. Not good if you plan on sleeping but to be fair it is club 18-30 so you do expect that. Pool area very small, best off heading to the beach, staff not very friendly at all, maids very ignorant, get annoyed if you ask for more toilet roll and completely refuse to give you clean towels. On our first day we think the maids went through our stuff, opened cases, opened bags etc. and even moved things about (in both rooms) however we cant prove it so never said anything to them but made dam sure we bought the safe and kept all our money, passports and mobiles in it.
Very cheap for drink and food in Sunny Beach, we could get starters, mains, sides, soft drinks and alcohol drinks for 6 people and the most we ever paid was 170 LEVS working out at less the £15 each and that was our most expensive meal. Great deals to be had on the drink front as long as you haggle with them, in 1 bar we managed to get 7 cocktails and 7 shots of sambuca for only 10 LEVS that’s less than £5 for the lot. A group of guys who came in the same bar as us at the same time got the same order and paid 50 LEVS (£25) The drinks are extremely strong especially the cocktails they don’t even watch when pouring it and the juice doesn’t even touch the bottom of the glass (bonus for those who enjoy a good booze up)
For us it certainly wasn’t our best holiday, although the weather was amazing, beaches were gorgeous and bars and nightclubs were great we wouldn’t advise going back and certainly not to this hotel. As a group of girls being aged 23-26 we found it very young. Don’t think anyone else in the hotel was over 18 or 19 so definitely great if you’re a bit younger. Just please be very careful with the reps as they are taken advantage of young people most likely on their first holiday and it’s just a shame that people fall for it.
As for the mafia, yes parts are run by the Russian Mafia and your rep will warn you of this when you arrive however we had no contact what so ever with them, no problems at all. They run the casinos and the strip clubs so as long as you stay away from them you will never come into contact with them.
